Greencastle runs by Cloverdale
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Lewis vs. Lewis really didn’t get off the ground. And Tesmer-Gamer vs. Koosman never happened. YET, WHEN FRIDAY’S track and field meet at Greencastle High School Stadium was completed, there wasn’t too much the Putnam County coaches could be disappointed about from an early-season meet. In fact, while collecting ribbons and result sheets, Cloverdale coach Jim Glenn and Greencastle coach Charlie Dobson talked about how good the meet was. “It was fun,” Dobson said, shortly before learning Greencastle had won the threeteam meet 67-56 over Cloverdale. Monrovia finished third with 27 points. “Dale Harrison did his best by four feet (in the shot put). John Price ran a real nice race in the 3200 (11:31.9 for second place). He knocked 20 seconds off his time,” Dobson said of the Tiger Cubs. THE GIRLS MEET was not nearly as close. Greencastle ran away with a 75-44 victory over Monrovia. Cloverdale, without defending Putnam County distance champion Monica Koosman (who was visiting a Franklin College), finished third with 26 points. Koosman’s absence, however, did not cost Cloverdale even second place because Monrovia’s strength was in the sprints and field events. And while Joy Tesmer and Lori Gamer may have been disappointed
Pacers score 125 to defeat Pistons
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Detroit’s Isiah Thomas, back in action after missing 32 games with a broken wrist, would prefer no afternoon games when his Pistons go after a third consecutive NBA championship. “I didn’t carry my share of the load,” Thomas said Sunday after scoring only 11 points as Indiana beat the Pistons 125-107 the highest point total against Detroit this season. “I KNOW I would have problems during afternoon games because of the swelling but I didn’t think it would be this bad,” he said of the pain he felt in his right wrist during a 5-for-18 shooting effort “I was just weak. I just didn’t have as much strength,” said Thomas, playing in his sixth consecutive game since coming off the injured list “In the morning it swells up and it swells really bad and it just takes the whole day to get the swelling down. “Fortunately we’ve been playing night games. By us having an afternoon game, I just didn’t have the same strength that I normally have.” BOTH TEAMS HEAD into the

Koosman did not run, Greencastle assistant coach Sharon Chiong was not. She worked it into Tesmer’s and Gamer’s races. “It’s so key to be consistent and not worry about anybody else, to just run your own race," Chiong said. TESMER EASILY WON the 3200 in 13:11.5 and the 1600 in 5:46.9 with teammate Gamer close behind. “I’m pleased with where they are,“ coach Chiong said. ’’They were a little off their pace. We need to be more consistent on our second and third laps. The weather and the place of the meet on the schedule, turned the Lewis vs. Lewis pole vault competition into almost a practice. the pole vault at 11-feet Cloverdale’s Chris Lewis, who went to the IHSAA State Championship Meet last year and cleared 13-feet-6, managed only 10-feet. JASON GIBBS AND Jeremiah Lavoine obviously have their steps down. Gibbs, only a sophomore, cleared a season-high 6-feet-5 to win the high jump for Greencastle. Although neither was a season-best, Gibbs also won the long jump at 20-feet-4 1 A and the 100 dash in 11.4 seconds. Lavoine accounted for a bunch of Cloverdale’s points. The senior won the 300-meter low hurdles in 42.5 seconds, the 110 high hurdles in 15.7 seconds and ran anchor on Cloverdale’s winning 1600-meter relay team. He also finished third in the high jump. Brian McCammon was also a double-event winner for Cloverdale. The junior held off Monrovia’s Shepard to win the 1600meter run in 5:01.84, turned in a 2:16.8 for first place in the 800 and joined Lavoine, Jesse Wyatt and Jeff Matthews to win the 1600 relay in 3:42.6. SUSAN STARK JOINED Tesmer as a double-event winner for Greencastle’s girls. Stark won the discus with a throw of 79-feet-10, then ran a 2:33.8 to win the 800, the event in which she qualified for the state championship meet last year. Masters won with par score
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) another Masters lost. Last year, Raymond Floyd dumped a ball in the water on the second playoff hole. And lost. In 1989, Scott Hoch had a foot putt to win on the first playoff hole. And lost. THIS YEAR, THREE players came to the 18th hole tied for the lead. Only one of them could make a par. That one player was lan Woosnam. And though he walked away as champion of the 55th Masters simply because he made a par, it was not as simple as it sounds. He had to make a tricky 8-foot putt to save that elusive par and win the tournament. THERE IS NOTHING especially difficult about the closing hole at Augusta National Golf Club. It’s just that it happens to be the last hole of The Masters. Jose-Maria Olazabal got there first and was the first to find trouble. His drive found the trap on the left side of the fairway. He blasted his second shot out of the trap into the greenside trap that guards the green in the front Another blast This one short of the hole about 35 feet on the tier below the pin. He left the putt short and finished at 10 under par. Tom Watson drove first, still carrying the honor from his dramatic eagle at No. 15, his second eagle in three holes that pulled him into a tie for the lead. BUT THE MAGIC was gone. Watson drove with a 3 wood, but missed the fairway wide right, his ball snuggling among the pine needles. Then Woosnam drove.

MONTICELLO The Greencastle Tiger Cubs finished 34 strokes off the winning pace Saturday in the Twins Lakes Invitational Golf Tournament at Tippecanoe Country Club. West Lafayette won the 11team tournament with a 333 team score. Greencastle’s foursome scored a 367. Ryan Wallace led Greencastle with an 85, shooting a 40 on the first nine and 45 on the second. Doug Hill shot a consistent 4344 for an 87. After that the scores fell off, as Kyle Christiansen carded an 97 and Tat-

Another booming drive from the 5-foot-4 Welshman, but left, far left, fortunately into a practice fairway between the 9th, Bth and 18th fairways. WOOSNAM THEN played the role of traffic cop, scout and shotmaker as he first waved the gallery out of his way, jumped up to try to see the green, then jogged to the top of the hill to get a glimpse before hitting his ball onto the left fringe short of the flag. Watson had the same nearly impossible bunker shot that Olazabal had and got nearly the same result About 30 feet past the hole. It was a par putt he would slam past the hole and miss coming back for a tournament-ending double bogey. MEANWHILE, WOOSNAM chipped to about 8 feet from the hole. No gimme by any stretch of the imagination. Time froze as he stood over the ball. Then he stroked it cleanly into the bottom of the cup. Woosnam pounded his fist through the air. His caddy sprinted across the green and grabbed the tiny man into his arms. Masters, Scores AUGUSTA, Ga.
