People in the news Crash injures Shoemaker, 59 SAN DIMAS, Calif. (AP) Bill Shoemaker, the winningest jockey in thoroughbred racing history, was in critical condition Tuesday with internal injuries suffered in an automobile accident. “His condition is critical,” Kay Threlkeld, a Glendora Community Hospital spokesman, said Monday night, some three hours after the accident. “That’s about all I can say. He is in surgery at this time. I just know he was in an automobile accident and suffered major internal injuries. The paramedics brought him in here.” CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY Patrol officer Joe Flores said Shoemaker, 59, was alone in his 1990 Ford Bronco 11, a four-wheel-drive vehicle, when the accident occurred. “We think he was under the influence of alcohol because there was an odor of alcohol on his person,” Flores said. “He has been arrested.” Flores said the accident occurred near San Dimas about 8:30 p.m. PDT as Shoemaker was driving westbound on State Route 30, the connector road to the southbound 210 Freeway. San Dimas is located about 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles. “The vehicle went over the side ... down a 50-foot embankment,” Flores said. “It rolled over several times and landed on its wheels. It appears to have rolled over at least two times.” SHOEMAKER, OF NEARBY San Marino, rode in his final race at nearby Santa Anita on Feb. 3, 1990, before a crowd of 64,573, capping a 41-year riding career. The race, billed as “The Legend’s Last Ride,” was televised nationally. Shoemaker’s mount, Patchy Groundfog, finished fourth as the 7-10 favorite. Shoemaker rode 8,833 wins and his mounts earned $123,375,524 records which will be very difficult, if not impossible, to surpass. So will the 40,350 races in which he competed. He also finished second 6,136 times and third 4,987 times. Shoemaker became the oldest jockey ever to win the Kentucky Derby when, at age 54, he rode Ferdinand to victory in the 1986 race. • MALIBU, Calif. (AP) Michael Landon, disclosing he has inoperable liver and pancreatic cancer, joked that his role in TV’s “Highway to Heaven” had prepared him for the worst “I think ‘Highway to Heaven’ helped me with that since I played a dead guy anyway,” he said Monday at his horse ranch here. “I am going to fight it” the 54-year-old actor added. “Live every minute, guys.” He said he hopes to shrink the painful and usually deadly tumors with chemotherapy. The father of nine said he has no regrets. “It’s not like I’ve missed a hell of a lot,” he said. “I’ve had a pretty good lick here.”
Yippie, Yuppies, Ellyn tying knot
NEW YORK (AP) Despite the spat over keeping her own name, Ellyn Warren has planned her wedding with far too few obstacles for a character on “thirtysomething.” Where are the interfering relatives, nagging doubts and second thoughts? Isn’t “thirtysomething” a realistic TV series about the relationships of people in their 30s? And doesn’t just about everybody go through the wringer before they go down the aisle? BCalm down, fans: Polly Draper, who plays Ellyn, promises that tonight’s episode will give you your fill of wedding angst. ‘THERE HAVEN’T BEEN many shows that have dealt with that. I thought that there should be more,” Draper said. “In the 45 minutes of action-packed ‘thirtysomething,’ you’re going to get all of that that you can lisPOLLY DRAPER ten l 0 ” She’S Ellyn Yes, the spirit of Gary, who was killed in a car crash just a few episodes ago, will be part of the wedding. And his widow shows up even though she’s not friendly with the “thirtysomething” crowd. Complicating matters is the groom’s family. “They’re great characters,” Draper said. “There are things about his family that she’s afraid are going to ruin the wedding.” But they don’t. Ellyn and Billy Sidel (Erich Anderson) tie the knot at the home of their friends, Michael and Hope (Where else?). DRAPER SAID SINGLE women empathize with her portrayal of a career woman who’s uncertain about the rest of her life, who got involved with and hurt by a married man, and who is jealous of her best friend’s attention to her children. “The character to me is totally understandable and

BILL SHOEMAKER Alcohol blamed
MIAMI (AP) Mickey Rourke excels in tough guy roles. Now he’s going to be one. The 34-year-old actor is jumping into the boxing ring as a professional. Rourke, who just finished a movie with Don Johnson, “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man,” said he’ll make his debut May 23 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale as a super middleweight, 168 pounds maximum. An opponent for the sanctioned bout hasn’t been named. “I’m not doing this for the public,” Rourke said in Monday’s The Miami Herald. “I’m not doing this for everybody to see. I’m really doing this for myself.” Rourke had 26 amateur fights in the 1970 s before acting in such films as “916 Weeks,” “The Pope of Greenwich Village,” “Diner,” “Angel Heart” and “Barfly.” He said he plans to fight 12 to 15 times over the next two years, then get out of the ring. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A former Motown singer claims her voice was used to enhance Paula Abdul’s on the hit album “Forever Your Girl.” Yvette Marine is suing Virgin Records for unspecified royalties and credit for the performance. She said she was never paid or acknowledged. Marine’s lawsuit, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims her voice was mixed with Abdul’s on the songs “Opposites Attract” and “I Need You.” “Forever Your Girl,” has sold 7 million copies since its 1988 release. “At that time, Paula Abdul was an inexperienced singer,” said Steven Ames Brown, Marine’s attorney. “Obviously, they wanted someone there to help Paula.” The lawsuit claims Virgin Records falsely labeled the album and produced videos showing Abdul performing alone. Abdul’s publicist was skeptical. “They waited three years to come out with this,” Eliot Sckuler said. Virgin Records, in a statement, called the allegations “opportunistic, bad-faith litigation” filed in a “quest for fame.” Marine performed background vocals only and received appropriate credit, the company said.
very real,” said Draper, who studied acting at Yale Drama School. “In fact, if most people would acknowledge it, they would find they do a lot of silly things in their lives, too. “That’s maybe one reason they have such a big stake in not identifying with me. They don’t want to face that they have made equally profound mistakes.” ELLYN HAS BECOME something of a symbol of hope for single women who are wondering if putting career first was so smart after all. “At first they were worried that women would be upset that, ‘Aw, she got married. Now we can’t relate to her anymore.’ But I was really surprised that the response was exactly the opposite: ‘Yeah! Good for her.’ “My theory is that if she can get married, there’s hope for all us,” said Draper, who is divorced. It’s not in Ellyn to live happily ever after (“Does anyone?” Draper said), but it’s questionable whether Ellyn and Billy will live at all. Whether “thirtysomething” will return for a fifth season has yet to be determined. ABC will decide later this month whether to renew the series. Its creators, Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, are considering leaving the show, and it’s unclear whether it would continue without them. THE ACTORS, DRAPER said, are not sick of the show. She is sick, however, of “thirtysomething” being pegged “the yuppie drama” and Ellyn the “neurotic” character. But even her parents disagree about the show. Draper’s mother likes it, but her father “just can’t understand any of the Sturm und Drang of the show,” she said. “More, he doesn’t understand why he has to watch it on TV. And I think that may be what the people who don’t like it think.” Draper’s dad may have another motive, she admitted: “I guess he judges the show by how much I’m in it and by how nice I am during the time that I’m in it.”
