Dear Abby

Stepping back in school was big leap forward for dropout

DEAR ABBY: Many times I have read in your column, “Go back to school no matter how old you are.” I took your advice. Three years ago, I had a choice to go on welfare or go to school. Since I didn’t want to raise my children on welfare, I chose school. It was hard for me to think of going to school, as I had dropped out at 16 and didn’t want to go back with a bunch of younger people. I started college and worked on my G.E.D. at the same time. I also found out that people of all ages went to school. Going back wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be because it was what I really wanted. I’m proud to say that I will be graduating from the Mohave Community College on May 10 at the age of 36. Please keep telling people to go to school. It’s the best thing I ever did for myself. Thank you, Abby. DEBI SMITH, LAKE HAVASU, ARIZ. DEAR DEBI: Don’t thank me it was you who recognized good advice when you saw it,

Cascarones are easy, fun to make Q. You once ran an article on how to make cascarones and I have misplaced it. Could you please repeat the directions? Dee Money, Del Rio, Texas A. Cascarones, which are decorated hollow eggshells filled with confetti, are both easy and fun to make. Whenever you use a fresh egg, don’t crack the shell in half to remove the egg. Carefully poke a pin or thumbtack hole in the small end and with a spoon tap out a dime-size hole in the opposite, larger end. Next, hold the egg over a bowl and blow into the pin hole, forcing the egg out the dime-size hole (or you can use a new baby bulb syringe to “blow” it out). Gently run water into the empty eggshell to rinse it out, then place it on paper toweling to dry. Decorate the eggshells with dye or paint and fill the inside with confetti, then after inserting the confetti, paste a small piece of tissue paper over the larger opening to hold it in. These are a fun tradition during Fiesta time in San Antonio. You know someone really cares when he or she cracks a cascarone over your head! Heloise KEEPING TIME Dear Heloise: While I was connected to the military for 22 years I found keeping one clock in the house set to the time of the country my husband was in made us feel much closer to him. Now with many service members stationed in the Middle East, their children and families could keep a clock set to the Middle East time so they can keep track of what their loved ones may be doing. I wear an extra watch and have it set to Saudi Arabia time. Just doing this has already made me feel closer to our boys. Lois George, Ridge Manor, Fla. A helpful hint indeed! You deserve a big Heloise hug, as all our troops do. —Heloise SELF-GRIP CLOSURES Q. I am the mother of active twins and have found the new sneakers with selfgripping closures a time-saver. I have one problem with them, though lint accumulates on the closures rather quickly, making them unsightly and less likely to grip together. Is there an easy way to clean these sneaker closures? Mrs. D. Oliver A. A small crochet hook will help you get at the lint easily to remove it. To help prevent this in the future, make sure the self-gripping closures are closed after the children take the sneakers off. Heloise

and you went for it! Congratulations. DEAR ABBY: Just before my only child's passing away, he informed me that while he was in college (a medical student) he had been a frequent sperm donor. I cannot begin to tell you how priceless it would be for me to locate some of my genetic grandchildren! There are many registries for adoptees and their natural parents, but to my knowledge, there are none for sperm donors and their donor offspring. I am hoping to develop such a registry in an effort to locate

these precious children and help others in this situation. AN OPEN CHAPTER DEAR OPEN CHAPTER: I urge you to discuss the legal ramifications of your idea with an attorney before progressing further with this project. Donor confidentiality is one of the reasons artificial insemination has been so successful in this country. (Last year, between 50,000 and 80,000 women benefited from artificial insemination in the U.S.A.) If sperm donors knew there was a chance that their identities would later be revealed, they w’ould not donate which would greatly reduce the number of candidates (and the genetic characteristics) from which prospective mothers and their physicians would be able to choose. * * ♦ DEAR ABBY: A year ago. I was a poor student, shy, lonely, friendless, unhappy, and I never smiled. I wrote to you, and you gave me the best advice I ever received. Here it is: “The key to being popular with

both sexes is: Be kind. Be honest. Be tactful. If you can’t be beautiful (or handsome), be well-groomed, tastefully attired, conscious of your posture, and keep a smile on your face. “Be clean in body and mind. If you're not a ‘brain,’ try harder. If you’re not a great athlete, be a good sport. Try to be a standout in something. If you can’t dance or sing, learn to play an instrument. Think for yourself, but respect the rules. Be generous with kind words and affectionate gestures, but save the heavy artillery for later. You’ll be glad you did. If you need help, ask God. If you don’t need anything, thank God. Love, Abby” I followed your advice, step by step, and kept it handy when I felt low. I am now president of the sophomore class and I play the guitar. Smiling comes naturally to me, and I have a boyfriend who is kind and respectable. My grades are better, and I have more friends than I ever dreamed I’d have. Abby, you’re not the only one who helped me. God helped me. He answered my prayers. CAROL
