Dear Abby
Stepmom unsure of protection to give sexually active teen
DEAR ABBY: I have a beautiful teen-aged stepdaughter who lives with her mother and stepfather. Although “Betty” loves her mother, she has never been able to confide in her. She’s very religious and fairly strict, so Betty comes to me with everything. Betty recently told me that she lost her virginity to a boy she had been forbidden to see. She needed someone to talk to someone who wouldn’t put her down, and I was there for her. She begged me not to tell her mother. My heart aches for this girl, and my biggest fear is that she may become pregnant or contract a venereal disease. We discussed condoms and birth control pills, but she can’t get the pill without parental consent. I’d like to get the pill for her, and I think I could if she were to go to my doctor, but I wouldn’t feel right doing it behind her mother’s back.
Heloise Dye Easter Eggs the natural way
Q. Is there a way to dye Easter eggs without using the dye packages from the store? I seem to remember my mother using onion peels. Thanks for the help. Robin Brown, Baltimore, Md. A. Many of you know how to make eggs yellow by boiling them with onion peels, but did you know that eggs will turn green when boiled with spinach or turnip tops? One of my secretaries lived in Greece and said to color eggs dark red the Greeks added a beet to the water. You can also add packages of unsweetened powdered drink mix put one package in each pot of eggs you boil. The shells will turn the color of the mix you add. Not only will you have beautifully colored eggs but the kitchen will smell great too. Heloise SEND A GREAT HINT TO: Heloise P. Easter baskets can office nutrition rather than candy
By JACKIE BAUMANN Extension Home Economist It is possible to offer a nutritious Easter basket as an alternative to the traditional basket of candy. The basket could contain interesting new foods and/or include familiar well-like foods which contain a better ratio of nutrients to calories than candy does. CANDY IS usually lacking significant amounts of nutrients other than sugar, a simple carbohydrate. A healthier basket could also provide activities such as books to read, games to play, seeds to plant, etc. A basket that is filled with a variety of items other than just candy can be much more personal and fit the receivers special interest. Surprisingly, it can even be cheaper to use toys and nutritious food than chocolate eggs and bunnies to fill a basket. EASTER BASKETS are enjoyed by all ages. You might consider making up baskets for

Her mother and I are very good friends and she trusts me. If I get Betty the pill, will it make it easier for her to continue having sex? She’s already told me that if she got pregnant, she would come to me for help. BETTY’S CONFIDANTE DEAR CONFIDANTE: Every teen-ager needs a mature, nonjudgmental friend to whom he

who knows how to make the starter for Amish friendship bread. So far I’ve had no luck at all. I would appreciate it very much if you could help me. Sterett, Lake Villa, 111. A. I’m afraid I’ll have to ask my readers to help us with this one because I don’t have a recipe in my files for the starter bread. If you have the recipe and want to send it, write to Heloise, P.O. It’s fantastic on chicken and other meats when we grill! Dana R., Seattle, Wash. For those who missed it the first time, combine 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1 teaspoon basil, 1 teaspoon oregano and 1 teaspoon powdered lemon rind in a blender and mix well. Store in a sealed container with a few grains of rice to keep it from clumping together. Heloise

neighbors, grandparents or other elderly relatives. Below are some suggestions for preparing baskets with a theme and with less candy. Since Easter baskets are enjoyed by all ages, some items listed may not be suitable for all age groups. Some themes for baskets are: LIFE ON THE FARM plant starter, seeds, toy tractor, book about farm, mystery vegetable such as jicama, avocado, etc. Planting your own garden small gardening tools, toy tractors,

or she can turn for sound advice and counsel. Ideally, that person is a parent. But if that’s not possible as in Betty’s case Betty’s mother should be grateful that her daughter has someone like you in her daughter’s corner. Since Betty has already lost her virginity, I doubt that she will stop now. Stress the fact that sex today can have very serious consequences; therefore, selectivity is vital. We now know a sexually transmitted disease can be fatal. So be sure she understands how to protect herself from pregnancy or disease. * * * DEAR ABBY: I am 27 years old. When I was in the second semester of my senior year of high school, I was raped. I couldn’t face my classmates, so I dropped out of school.

Lighten up apple strudel
By Better Homes and Gardens Making a great pastry dessert needn't mean spending all afternoon in the kitchen, at least not in my kitchen. I often use phyllo dough as a baking shortcut. Not only does phyllo produce flaky crusts like magic, but it can also reduce calories, too down to 83 calories per serving for this strudel. Phyllo (FEE-lo). also spelled silo, comes in thin sheets and is used in traditional Greek dishes such as baklava. You can buy it in the freezer section of many supermarkets. To use phyllo, you layer several sheets together, brushing each sheet with melted margarine or butter as you stack the phyllo. While you're working, be sure to cover the unbuttered sheets with a slightly damp towel to keep them from drying out. LIGHTER APPLE STRUDEL 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (4 cups) 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 2 sheets frozen phyllo dough (17by 12-inch rectangles), thawed 1 -3rd cup margarine or butter, melted
I returned the following year to graduate in 1982, although I was ready to graduate in 1981. My picture was already in the 1981 yearbook, and my name had even been printed in the 1981 graduation booklet. All of my friends graduated in 1981. The Class of’Bl is now planning its 10th reunion, and I feel that this is the gathering I should attend. However, technically, I didn’t graduate until 1982. Should I go to the party with all of the classmates with whom I should have graduated? Or should I wait a year and probably not attend because I don’t know any people from that class? Please don’t use my name. UNDECIDED DEAR UNDECIDED: Go with :he Class of ’Bl.
