People in the news This Bo knows Razzies, too
LOS ANGELES (AP) Andrew Dice Clay and his movie “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane” collected top Golden Raspberry Awards for the worst in 1990 cinema. Bo Derek earned a Golden Raspberry at Sunday’s ceremony for worst actress in “Ghosts Can’t
Do It,” a film that claimed four of the 10 awards. The 11th Annual Razzies, as the Golden Raspberries are known, also recognized Sofia Coppola, who appeared in father Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part III,” for worst supporting actress and worst new star. Clay was named worst actor. The foul-mouthed comic’s “Ford Fairlane” tied for worst picture with “Ghosts Can’t Do

It” and also picked up the worst screenplay. Donald Trump was named worst supporting actor for a cameo in ‘‘Ghosts Can’t Do It.” John Derek was pronounced worst director for the movie. The Razzies are chosen by 350 filmmakers, critics and moviegoers in 25 states with additional voters in Canada, England, Switzerland and Japan. The Razzie trophy, a gold spray-painted raspberry atop a Super 8 film reel, has an estimated value of $1.79. RENO, Nev. (AP) The next face-off between dug-in Iraqi forces and advancing allied troops could occur in the Nevada desert, if the state’s Motion Picture Division gets its way. “We already played Iraq once in the HBO feature ‘Steal the Sky.’ We are prepared to do so again,” said division director Bob Hirsch. NEVADA, WITH ITS huge expanses of desert, military installations and casino strips, is a popular alternative to Southern California as a setting for movies, television shows and commercials. Robin Holabird, deputy director of the state’s movie agency, said that CBS recently has expressed interest in filming a movie about the Middle East in Nevada. Producer Yoram Ben Ami chose the Stead area north of Reno for “Steal the Sky.” The movie, based on a true story, is about an Iraqi pilot who stole a MiG jet and Hew it to Israel. Il was filmed in Nevada, Rome and Israel, Holabird said. “When they arrive at the Dead Sea, it’s really Pyramid Lake,” she said. THE LAKE, NORTH OF Reno, made a cameo appearance in 1965 as the Red Sea in “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” she said. Films have generated an average of SSO million a year in revenue for Nevada over the last four years. “Top Gun” was made at the Fallon Naval Air Station cast of Reno in 1986-
Viewer’s guide to Oscars show
LOS ANGELES (AP) The Academy Awards broadcast is supposed to overflow with suspense. This year, the drama may tap out early. The first award to be presented Monday (9 p.m. EST, ABC-TV) following a production number with Jasmine Guy and Steve LaChance will be for best supporting actress. The announcement could be the first indication of a “Dances With Wolves” rout. Coming into the 63rd annual Academy Awards, Kevin Costner’s epic Western had 12 nominations, the most of any film. With a best supporting actress victory for Mary McDonnell, “Dances With Wolves” may collect a wave of momentum and never look back until it gallops off with the best picture Oscar. HERE IS A VIEWER’S guide to the Oscar telecast, based on a script subject to change, with pivotal moments described. Award No. 1: Best Supporting Actress. Miss McDonnell (Stands With a Fist in “Dances With Wolves”) is not the clear favorite for supporting actress, but her competition is weak. The upset pick would be Whoopi Goldberg, the dimestore psychic of “Ghost.” Award No. 3: Makeup. Will have no real bearing on the eventual big winner, but a fascinating competition this year. The contestants are “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “Dick Tracy,” “Edward Scissorhands.” Stay tuned to see if Madonna does anything nasty while singing “Sooner or Later” from “Dick Tracy.” AWARD NO. 4 BEST Supporting Actor. Graham Greene (Kicking Bird in “Dances With Wolves”) is nominated. Even if Bruce Davison wins for his depiction of a selfless care-giver in “Longtime Companion,” this should not be seen as a “Dances With Wolves” defeat. Award No. 10. Film Editing. This category can be a bellwether, and “Dances With Wolves” is in it. Last year, “Bom on the Fourth of July” won both here and for best director for Oliver Stone. It lost best picture

JOHN LITHGOW Up in smoke
RADNOR, Pa. (AP) John Lithgow says filming the TV movie “The Boys” nearly drove him to take up smoking. Woods’ character in the ABC movie contracts terminal cancer through secondhand smoke. After spending the day wreathed in smoke, Lithgow said, “I was still hankering for a cigarette.” He “came this close to being addicted to cigarettes,” he said in the March 30 issue of TV Guide. Lithgow said it was not his first such experience. In 1988, while starring in “M. Butterfly” on Broadway, his character began the evening with a smoke. “I got to the point where I couldn’t perform the play without that first cigarette smoke,” Lithgow said. LOS ANGELES (AP) Treat Williams’ series, “Eddie Dodd,” has been canceled by ABC after just two episodes. And CBS said Friday it was canceling “WIOU,” a drama set in a TV newsroom. Williams, who starred in the movies “Prince of the City” and “Hair,” played a flamboyant, crusading lawyer in the low-rated “Eddie Dodd.” Among those who will be in the fall lineup is screeching comedian Sam Kinison, who will play a half-foot-high alter ego to Tim Matheson in Fox network’s “The Brave New World of Charlie Hoover.” Talk-show host Arscnio Hall will have an animated series on CBS. Norman Lear, producer of “All In The Family,” is bringing “Balls” to CBS. Il is a half-hour comedy set in the 1890 s about a family that sells tennis balls. • ALBERTVILLE, Minn. (AP) A bullet-riddled shirt worn by Kyle MacLachlan in his role as FBI agent Dale Cooper in “Twin Peaks” will be framed by the couple who paid S4OO for it at a benefit auction. Barb and Steve Mulawka said they didn’t plan on buying anything at the auction Saturday. “We just said, ‘What the heck. You only live once,”’ said Mrs. Mulawka. The shirt was among several pieces of “Twin Peaks” memorabilia donated to St. John’s Preparatory School. Bob Engels, co-produccr and cowriter of the ABC series, graduated from St. John’s in 1967. A Houston resident bought an original script from second season for S2OO.
to “Driving Miss Daisy.” Upset specials: “The Godfather Part III” and “Good Fellas. Reba McEntire, who lost most of her band in a recent airplane crash, is set to follow with her version of “I’m Checking Out” from “Postcards From the Edge.” This might be the evening’s most emotional moment. AWARDS NO. 16 AND 17. Original and Adapted Screenplays. “Dances With Wolves” already has won the adaptation award from the Writers Guild of America and should repeat. The WGA honored Barry Levinson’s original script for “Avalon.” Award No. 20. Best Actress. All of the smart (and sentimental) money is on Joanne Woodward for “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.” Kathy Bates (“Misery”) and Anjelica Huston (“The Grifters”) could be spoilers. Start looking at your watch to see if the show is (yet again) going to run long. Award No. 21. Best Actor. Costner will have to get past Jeremy Irons from “Reversal of Fortune.” Don’t bet on it. A win for “Dances” here means it’s all over. Award No. 22. Best Director. Costner won the top prize from the Directors Guild of America. The firsttimer faces a very real challenge from Martin Scorsese, who made “Good Fellas. Award No. 23. Best Picture. Well, maybe presenter Barbra Streisand will sing the winner’s name. DIRECTOR JEFF MARGOLIS, who also directed last year’s well-received show, says the 1991 Oscars will move right along. “We cut down other things to try to keep it as close to three hours as you can,” Margolis said. “You hope that everyone says their thank-yous within 30 seconds to one minute.” Margolis hopes that, beyond a few unexpected winners, there will be no surprises. War-related security is so tight journalists will have their cameras inspected and bomb-sniffing dogs will prowl the Shrine Auditorium.
