The Greencastle Middle School swimming teams, girls and boys, combined for a 10765 co-ed victory over host West Vigo Thursday night to close the season. Greencastle won nine of the 11 events (the 400-freestyle relay was excluded from the meet). The team of Mandy Modlin, Laura Heeke, Chris Hutchens and Jon Clark won the 200-medley relay. Individually for Greencastle, John Sims won the 200-

Braves hope to win first championship for Rady and Terre Haute on Saturday
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) No need to remind Terre Haute South how close but yet how painfully far the Braves have been from a state tourney championship. South reached the Final Fomin 1977, 1978 and 1979 without taking home the biggest prize in Indiana high school basketball. On Saturday, the llth-ranked Braves will try again, starting with No. 4 Indianapolis Brebeuf in the first of the two semifinal games at the Hoosier Dome. TOP-RANKED Gary Roosevelt will play unranked Whitko in the second semifinal, and the two winners will return Saturday night for the championship. “We don’t want to get caught up in all the hoopla, but I’m sure they’re going to read about it,” coach Pat Rady says of his players’ awareness of the school’s rich but frustrating tourney history. “Terre Haute is hungry. But we’re trying to downplay it. We don’t want any more pressure than we already have.” TERRE HAUTE is Indiana’s largest city without a state title. The Braves, then coached by Gordon Neff, were runners-up by one point in overtime to Muncie Central in 1978. They lost in the semifinals to East Chicago Washington in 1977 and in overtime to Muncie Central in 1979. Rady became coach in 1980 and has won nine sectional tournaments and five regionals. Last week’s victories over Jeffersonville and Vincennes gave him his first semistate title in 27 years as a coach. While the focus of media speculation is on a possible matchup of Gary Roosevelt’s Glenn Robinson against Brcbeuf’s Alan Henderson the leading candidates for Mr. Basketball Saturday’s first game features another big matchup of Henderson against his future Indiana University

In its previous two outings, the team had been playing sub-par, primarily due to problems with serving and a lack of playing time as a team, according to the coach. The WIVA 16-and-under team is made up of Jennifer Torr of South Putnam, Chris Oliver and Amanda Elliott of North Putnam, Jamie Sibbitt and Mandy Hecko of Greencastle, Jennifer Crouch and Misty Shaw of Danville.

BRIAN EVANS Braves’ go-to guy
teammate Brian Evans, South’s leader in just about every offensive category. “BRIAN’S OUR go-to guy,” Rady says of the 6-foot-8 senior, who averages 22.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. “He shoots the ‘3’ as well as anyone on the team, and if you’re going to bring two or three guys out on him, that’s just going to open somebody else up inside.” The Braves (23-3), whose losses were to defending state champion Bedford North Lawrence, Indianapolis Ben Davis and Evansville Bosse, have better overall size and scoring balance than Brebeuf. Besides Evans, South has three other players averaging in double figures, with Jeff Hutz and Steve Hart at 14.2 and Tobv
Pacers find new combination
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) On an off-night, Indiana coach Bob Hill found that he could rely on his bench for depth and quickness. “They say there’s something about the first night back from a long road trip,” Hill said after the Pacers handed Miami its fifth straight road loss and sixth straight overall, 117-107, Wednesday night. “We seemed a step behind in the first half, so I didn’t have a choice, but to go with a smaller lineup.” AND IT PROVED successful as Indiana’s bench outscored the Miami reserves 46-24. “The small lineup that we used helped us down the stretch to pull this one out,” said Indiana’s sixth man Detlef Scrempf, who led the Pacer reserves with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. “Late in the game, we started knocking the ball down and made Miami change its offense.” While forcing a change in the Heat’s offense, the Indiana offense, led by Reggie Miller with 27 points and Vem Fleming with 20, came to life in the latter half as well. AFTER MICHAEL WILLIAMS tied it at 95 early in the fourth quarter, Fleming scored three straight layups, coming off midcourt steals, to give Indiana a 101-95 lead with 8:28 left. Then it was Miller’s turn. Miami’s shots started to fall, but Miller responded with Indiana’s next 8 points to match 6 points from the Heat’s Glen Rice, who led all scorers with 31 points, and a layup from Sherman Douglas, who added 20 points. A slam dunk from Indiana’s George McCloud gave the Pacers a 111-103 advantage with 3:11 left in the game. “INDIANA TOOK US out of a lot of stuff in the second half,” Heat coach Ron Rothstein said. “They started trapping and we became tentative and stopped attacking. Basically, they took us out of our halfcourt game.” Rice and Douglas combined for the Heat’s final four points, but could not get any closer than 111107 with 2:01 left. “When we have a small lineup in the game, we are able to pick up the pace and make things happen,” said McCloud, who scored 11 points off the bench for Indiana. “We got a lot of deflections and

Stephens at 11.1. The only weakness, Rady says, is the Braves’ speed. ‘WE’RE ABOUT AS slow as you can get, but we’ll compete with you. We’ll run the ball, but not very fast Ben Davis tore us up, and Brebeuf handled Ben Davis (in the sectional). He (Brebeuf coach Mike Miller) is going to think he’s going against turtles.” Terre Haute easily is the highest scoring team in the Final Four, with an 83.3-point season average. The Braves topped 100 points three times in the regular season and have averaged 93 points over their past three tourney games. Brebeuf has the lowest scoring average (68.0) but has held its opponents to an average of 48 points a game all season and 47 a game in the tournament. “We’ll have a big task handling their guards,” Rady said. “They really play defense. If you get wrapped up in Alan too much, you forget his supporting cast. We’re not going to do that.” BREBEUF WOULD be wise not to do that with Evans, either. “He’s really been our leader, but our senior leadership has been the strength of our team,” Rady said. “Our four seniors all started last year. And we’re very well balanced.” Coach: Pat Rady Athletic Director: Pat Rady Nickname: Braves Colors: Red, Black and White Conference: None Enrollment: 1,472 Record: 23-3 Final AP Ranking: No. 11 Previous Final Four Appearances: 1977,1978,1979 Previous State Championships: None No. Player Ht Wt Pos Yr Avg. 10 Evan Mills 6-414 182 G Sr 8.2 12 Shan Samuels 6-1 150 G Jr 0.9 14 Trent Batson 5-11 154 G Sr 2.1 20 Brian Cottee 5-8 160 G Jr 1.4 22 Steve Hart 6-314 180 G Jr 14.2 32 Toby Stephens 6-414 195 F Sr 11.1 34 Chris Lee 6-714 220 C Jr 0.7 40JeffHutz 6-3 210 F Sr 14.2 44 Jeremy Harrold 6-4 180 G Jr 8.4 50 Brian Evans 6-8 200 C Sr 22.5 52 Alan Baker 6-014 210 F Jr 1.4 54CasiusBell 6-3 215 C Sr 2.7

Henderson and high-scoring offense shadow secret to Brebeuf’s success
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - ndianapolis Brebeuf boasts one of the greatest scorers in Indiana high school basketball history but owes much of its success to the defense and an almost anonymous supporting cast. The No. 4-ranked Braves got some early notice because of the 6-foot-9 Alan Henderson but kept winning because everyone else was doing what was needed, too, says coach Mike Miller. BREBEUF (26-1) WILL play No. 11-ranked Terre Haute South (23-3) in the first semifinal game Saturday at the Hoosier Dome. No. 1 Gary Roosevelt (28-1) plays unranked Whitko (17-8) in the second semifinal. The Indiana University-bound Henderson is averaging 28 points and 15.4 rebounds a game this season and is sixth among the state’s all-time scorers with 2,379 points. “Certainly Alan has been at the center of things, but it hasn’t been one player,” said Miller, who has guided Brebeuf to its first Final Four appearance. “Different players have stepped up at different times. We go seven or eight deep, and they do a nice job for us.” Brebeuf is averaging only 68 points a game for the season, but the Braves’ ferocious man-to-man defense has held its opponents to only 48 points a game on 37 percent shooting from the field, easily the best among the Final Four. “WE START TEACHING defense when they come in as freshmen, and we don’t change things a lot,” said Miller. “Defense is played with the heart. We’re not going to overwhelm anyone with physical presence, but we play as hard as we can.” Brebeuf’s only losses in the past 38 games were both to Indianapolis Ben Davis, and the Braves avenged a regular-season

Courtney (7.1). “Terre Haute South is scoring a lot of points. I’m impressed with their wins over Jeffersonville and Vincennes (in the semistate),” Miller said. “Their size gives us obvious problems, because other than Alan, we’re not very big. Hopefully, we can do something to stop them.” Besides the 61-53 midseason loss to Ben Davis, Brebeuf’s closes games were a pair of 1point victories over Carmel and Anderson Highland. The Braves’ success this year, however, was no surprise, Miller said. “WE GOT BEAT by Lawrence North (in the regional) at the buzzer when Alan was a sophomore, and Lawrence North went on to win the championship. Last year, we had a team that never really jelled. We had a group of kids who had been borderline reserve players, and they really dedicated themselves. They worked hard, went to summer camps, and were willing to make sacrifices, to do whatever it takes to win.” Following Lawrence North in 1989 and Southport last year, Brebeuf is the third consecutive Indianapolis team to reach the Final Four. The Braves also are the sixth team from a private school to get this far and are trying to be the first to win.
