Smoke odor gets a good cleaning
Q. Please tell me how I can rid my house of the odor of ashes from having fires in the fireplace all winter. I have cleaned the fireplace, even vacuumed it and used room deodorizers, but each day when I come in from work the fire odor is still there. Mary Brown, Philadelphia, Pa. Here are some things to do to help rid your home of the smoke odor. • Shampoo the carpeting (if you have it). • Wash or dry clean the draperies. • Change the filter in the furnace or air conditioning. • Spray the furniture with a fabric deodorant. Good luck. Heloise INDOOR GARDEN IDEA Dear Heloise: I always start my garden seedlings in the house in an egg carton. A friend suggested leaving half of an egg shell in each cup of the carton, putting a little soil in it and then planting the seed. When the seedling sprouts, pull out the egg shell and a'.l and plant it outside. It worked wonderfully! Frank M., Kames City, Texas

ORGANIZATION TIP Dear Heloise: I was forever misplacing receipts, records, warranties and other important paper work. To solve this problem I came up with the following organization method. I bought several different colored file folders and labeled each file with a separate label. I put medical records in red, monthly bill receipts in purple and warranties in green. As the need arises I make a new folder. Works great and I can find anything in just a few seconds! Linda F., Denver, Colo.
Dear Abby Girl showered with baby gifts found fertile soil for growth
DEAR ABBY: The letter you published from the office women, in conflict over whether a baby shower should be given for an unwed mother-to-be, revived a long-forgotten memory In 1962, I was 17 and had just graduated from high school. I had to give up two scholarships to college and take a job because I was pregnant and unmarried. In those days, most unwed mothers were sent away to have their babies, then gave them up for adoption so that no one in the family would be embarrassed. I chose to stay home and keep my baby. I’m sure my parents were embarrassed and disappointed in me. The baby’s father and I were immature, and a silly quarrel had caused our breakup. I was so depressed that I considered suicide on a daily basis. In my seventh month of pregnancy, 30 women from my office gave me a baby shower! I can’t begin to tell you how much it meant to me to have those wonderful women shower me with their good wishes and muchneeded gifts. They literally saved my life and my baby’s life. That shower turned my life around. After that, I was able to hold my head up. When my son was a year old, his father and I got together and were married. Five years later, we had another son. I worked while my husband finished college, and after he graduated, I went to college and graduated in 1977. Today, our firstborn is married and has a son of his own. Abby, when I think of how close I

came to ending my life, I shudder. I also thank God for those wonderful co-workers who didn’t ponder whether it was proper to give a baby shower for an unmarried girl. That shower brought me out of the worst depression of my life. Your advice was right on, Abby. Keep up the good work. KAREN IN ROCHESTER * * * DEAR ABBY: Thank you for all you have done through your “Operation Dear Abby” for the American troops stationed in the Persian Gulf. It would be wonderful if your readers would also write to members of the British military who are our allies, and let them know how much we appreciate their contribution. Also writing to members of the French military might make a fascinating project for some foreign-lan-guage students. To correspond with someone in the British military, address letters

Those interested in participating should be aware that overseas postal rates will apply. * * * DEAR ABBY: My son recently announced his engagement. When I told my next-door neighbor (we have lived next door for 25 years and have been friends, taking care of each other’s property during vacations etc.), she said she hoped there wasn’t a baby on the way! (There isn’t.) This really made me quite angry, but I was so taken aback by such a cruel and insensitive remark I replied, “I certainly hope not!” The more I thought about this, the angrier I became. Now that plans are being made, I don’t feel like including her name on the guest list. What would you do? A SAN CARLOS, CALIF., READER DEAR READER: After a friendship of 25 years, I would

forgive the neighbor for her tasteless remark and invite her to the wedding. ♦ ♦ * DEAR ABBY: My husband and daughter-in-law have a debate going. He says that a person can become addicted to caffeine from tea or coffee. My daughter-in-law says “no way.” (She is a coffee lover.) Can a person become addicted to caffeine? AN INTERESTED LISTENER DEAR LISTENER: According to George Marcelle, communications director of the U.S. Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, caffeine is a drug, and like every other drug, it is possible to become addicted to it. If your daughter-in-law doesn’t believe you, ask her to quit drinking coffee cold turkey for one week and see how she fares. ♦ »♦ CHUCKLE (OR GROAN) FOR TODAY: “It’s not the world that’s got so much worse, but the news coverage that’s got so much better.” G.K.
