Cloverdale wins eighth grade title
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE Just maybe there is some magic left in those old Cloverdale High School basketball uniforms. Clad in the light green uniforms the Cloverdale High School team wore enroute to the 1983 semistate, the Cloverdale eighth grade captured the school’s first county basketball title at any level since 1985 on Thursday night. J.T. BRANNEMAN hit two free throws with six seconds left in the game to provide Cloverdale with a cushion for a 44-42 victory over the North Putnam Cougars in the eighth grade championship game of the Putnam County Tournament Thursday night at Cloverdale Junior-Senior High School. The Clovers took a 36-30 lead into the fourth quarter, but did not score in the first two minutes. North took the opportunity to close to within one, when Shawn Berry put back an offensive rebound. Jay Matthews broke the ice for Cloverdale with a bucket on the ensuing possession. A Paul Schubert free throw tied the score 38-38 with 2:24 remaining, but Cloverdale went back on top to stay when Mat-

Sharks close with win over Eagles
A new Greencastle-South Putnam rivalry may be developing. The Greencastle Tiger Sharks, 10-6, closed the regular-season and said good-bye to senior members Thursday night with a 114-72 victory at McAnally Pool while gaining respect for the South Putnam Eagles. “SOUTH PUTNAM IS by far the most improved team we have seen. Brian Reynolds had outstanding performances in the 200- and 500-freestyles,” Greencastle coach Paul Bretscher said. Reynolds won the 200-freestyle in 2:07.98 and paced a one-two finish for South in the 500-freestyle with a 5:56.61. Gerrit Thompson took second place. Greencastle, however, remains the Putnam County swimming champion. The Tiger Sharks won nine events, took first and second in four of them and swept the top three scoring positions in diving. “OUR BEST performances were Brandt Modlin in the 100-but-terfly and 100-backstroke and Justin Krider, in his last try of the year, went 58.66 seconds in the 100freestyle,” coach Bretscher reported. “Also, Ross Manning in diving, Nathan Lewis in the 50-freestyle and Jim McCune in the 200-IM and 100-breaststroke.” Lewis won both the diving and 50-freestyle. He won the 50freestyle in 24.54 seconds, then paced a sweep of the top three places in the diving. LEWIS WON THE diving with a 182.15 score, his third straight meet over the 170-mark, followed by teammate Manning with a solid 173.10 score and Doug Scamahom

Greenlee has a streak of 52 consecutive games with at least one three-point basket The national record set in 1989 was 53, according to Bill Wagner, DePauw Sports Information Director. However, it is unknown if any other player in the nation has such a streak. Crist is a long shot to set the scoring against Manchester, but he needs just 53 points to become De-
