Eagles’ and Cougars’ win streaks over, but it’s still big game
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor A week ago the North PutnamSouth Putnam high school basketball appeared to be the highlight game of the season. Both teams had 10 victories, five-game winning streaks and were still in the hunt for the West Central Conference championship. But now North’s Cougars have lost two in a row. South’s Eagles were bumped off by West Vigo last weekend. So much for winning streaks AND WITH TUESDAY’S 6967 loss to Monrovia, North has gone from being a West Central Conference contender to a spoiler’s role. “We’re in a tough situation where we’ve lost two in a row. We have to come out and do something to change it,” North coach Jim Brothers said. “And South Putnam is a tough team to do that against.” South coach Kieth Puckett watched the Cougars against Monrovia, against Greencastle and against Cloverdale. “It doesn’t matter how they play against other people, they won’t play that way against us,” Puckett said of the Cougars. Regardless of their recent losses, North Putnam still takes a 10-5 record into Friday’s West Central Conference game and South Putnam stands 12-3. ALSO ON FRIDAY night, The Northview Knights (7-7) are the guest for Greencastle’s “Basketball Homecoming” and Owen Valley Patriots call on the Cloverdale Clovers in WCC contest North vs. South appears to be a
Long losing streak still haunts Medora
By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer The record book says Medora is 1-14 with an 11-game losing streak. Coach Brad McCammon, however, considers the Hornets’ slide to be much, much longer. In fact, it’s been 47 games and two coaching changes since Medora won a game on the court. The tiny southern Indiana school in Jackson County started the season with a 32-game losing streak. The Hornets lost their first three games and then were beaten 97-42 by Henryville, a defeat that later was overturned by forfeit because of Henryville’s use of an ineligible player. OFFICIALLY, THE STREAK ended at 35 games. As far as McCammon is concerned, it’s still painfully intact. “I don’t consider that a win. I consider that charity. I don’t Lhink the boys accept that as a win cither,” said McCammon, who also is Medora’s athletic director and is in his second stint as basketball coach. “Obviously, part of it is we don’t have a lot of kids to draw from,” McCammon said. “Whoever comes out for the team plays. We don’t have a lot of talent to draw from like the

battle of an offensive-minded team against a defensive-minded team. North averages 73.2 points per game and allows 68.8 points per game. South averages 65.3 points per game, but gives up just 55.1 points. ‘They’re going to try to outscore you and we’d like defense to control the game. It’s going to be a battle of wills,” Puckett predicted. “Our defense has been pretty sound, but we haven’t plaved anybody with the firepower of North Putnam.” PUCKETT SEES NORTH as a lineup with four players capable of scoring 20 points any night. larger schools.” Medora has 60 boys among the total fourgrade student population of 119. The girls’ basketball team finished the regular season 0-13, and the boys’ junior varsity has won only one game. McCammon’s varsity squad plays Henryville again on Friday night. ‘THE KIDS WE HAVE work hard and have a good attitude. That’s all we can ask from them,” he said. “They go out and play hard. Early on, they stay with teams, then depth takes over. As time goes on, you get worn down and taken out of the game physically.” In two losses last week, Medora was beaten 130-53 by Southwestern of Shelby County and 108-37 by White River Valley, a new consolidation of L&M, Switz City and Worthington. McCammon’s 10-player team is led by 6-foot sophomore Mark Booker, who plays guard or small forward and is averaging atx)ut 15 points a game. His biggest players are 6-5 Jason Sovem and 6-5 Jason Clampitt. What does he tell them before a game? “I tell them they have to believe they can accomplish their goals ... to play hard for four
Pacers, Dreiling starting to come around in new roles
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Starting is a novelty to Greg Dreiling, who had only four in his first four seasons. But, that may not be true if he continues playing like he has recently. With Rik Smits recovering from elbow surgery, Dreiling has started three consecutive games while helping the Indiana Pacers post three straight victories for the first time this season. The 7-foot-1 Dreiling had a career-high 11 rebounds while playing a career-high 34 minutes as Indiana beat Charlotte 123-105 Wednesday night. He also contributed 11 points, just one off his careerhigh. “GREG’S ADDING SO much to our team, especially defensively and on the boards,” Indiana coach Bob Hill said. “He made strong moves and I’m hopeful his offense will continue to improve.” Dreiling, a second-round draft pick from Kansas in 1986, has been the Pacers’ top rebounder in three of the past five games, pulling in 40 while scoring 39 points. Prior to the spun, he had only 29 rebounds and 73 points in 28 appearances this season. “He’s adjustments. He’s physical. He takes us up a level in terms of being physical,” Hill said. INDIANA LED FROM the start, outscoring the Hornets 9-2 en route to building their biggest lead at 32-13 on a slam dunk by Reggie Miller with 2:44 left in the first period. The Pacers made 12 of their first 17 shots and shot 73 percent in the quarter (16 of 22) to lead 40-24. Charlotte made several bids to get

Damon Slaton is averaging 18.2 points per game, Jay Mutterspaugh 12.1 and Jim Burdge has joined Cory Robinson at a deceivingly low 9.5 points per night. IF NORTH PLAYS a zone,

Curry had 12 of points in the second quarter when Charlotte pulled to within 11 points three times. The Hornets pulled to within nine twice after trailing 67-50 at halftime. Mutterspaugh, Slaton and Robinson are capable of big games from the perimeter. And recently Burdge has emerged as an inside force against man-to-man defenses. “I’m not so sure he’s just emerged in the last two games,” North coach Jim Brothers said of Burdge. “All year long he has been improving. “Whichever way you look at it you’re going to run into trouble,” Brothers explained. “The thing about them offensively, they don’t make mistakes. quarters. Hopefully, we can come out on top. If not, at least they can be proud of their effort.” THE STATE RECORD losing streak is 65 in a row by Jackson Township, which is now part of the Chesterton school system, from February 1954 to December 1957. Lowell lost 62 in a row from 1951-54, and Wheeler dropped 52 straight from 1977-79. Other long losing streaks include 43 by Cowan and 37 by Worthington, both from 198486, and a current streak of 26 by Hammond Clark. North Newton ended a 29-game losing streak with a 56-43 victory over South Newton Tuesday night. “Sometimes you want to hide your head in the sand,” says Hammond Clark coach Ron Sieman. “The kids are doing all they can. As a coach, you’re doing all you can. It’s to a point now where you wonder when it’s going to end. When is that door going to open? “We are this year’s Wheeler,” he said. son scored 20. Johnny Newman had 20 points for Charlotte. THE WIN MOVED Indiana to 9-8 since Hill replaced Dick Versace, who was fired after a 9-16 start. “They’re doing the things I’m asking them to do,” Hill said. “We won the boards and had only nine turnovers (a season low) and nine steals ... You can’t overlook that we won the game.” Indiana will go for its fourth in a row at Miami on Friday before returning home to play Seattle on Saturday. “We’ve got to get Miami and another one and get the momentum going strong ,” Miller said. “Three in a row has been eluding us all season. Now that we’ve finally got it, we’ve got to maintain the chemistry.” MEANWHILE, Charlotte returns home to host Boston on Friday with Rex Chapman, Randolph Keys and Kenny Gattison all on the injured list.
