Dallas has NFL Coach of Year

DALLAS (AP) Jimmy Johnson didn’t have a player of Pro Bowl caliber or one good enough to make even second team all-NFL. Somehow, however, his Dallas Cowboys won seven games and got into playoff contention, and that was good enough to earn him NFL Coach of the Year honors in just his second season in the league. “WE CAME A long way and we’ve still got a long way to go,” Johnson said Tuesday. “I’m truly honored. I think the voters looked at the entire year and the improvement we had made over last year.” Dallas had a six-game improvement under Johnson. They lost their last two games to Philadelphia and Atlanta after quarterback Troy Aikman suffered a separated shoulder. Johnson, who brought the University of Miami a national championship before he answered the call from Jerry Jones to replace Tom Landry, didn’t win in a landslide, just edging Art Shell of the Los Angeles Raiders by 2V2 votes. JOHNSON GOT votes from 80 sports writers and broadcasters in balloting conducted by The Associated Press. In 1989, the Cowboys were 1-15, die worst team in the NFL and in franchise history. “We were a ragtag team a year ago,” Johnson said. “It really gives me a good feeling, it really takes the edge off the way that we finished, to get this (award).” This season Dallas was 7-7 and needed a victory in either of its final two games to make the playoffs as a wild card. JOHNSON WAS A college teammate at Arkansas of Jones, who bought the Cowboys after the 1988 season. Johnson’s quick rebuilding has helped smooth his and Jones’ images after the firing of Landry. “Of course there was no way I could ever replace Landry in the eyes of many people,” Johnson said. “I just wanted a chance to do things on my own merit I think winning »his award helps our credibility.”

Cowboys’ coach will miss Buddy DALLAS (AP) Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson says he’ll miss his twice-yearly jousts with Buddy Ryan. “For private reasons I would have liked to see Buddy stay,” Johnson said. “We had built up a big rivalry.” Ryan, who had been involved in a running feud with Johnson for two years, was fired as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on the same day Johnson was named The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year. “Well, I guess he got me one last time,” Johnson told The AP from Atlanta where he was attending NFL meetings. “That’s something. I’m shocked. I’m sure he will be in the profession somewhere. “Buddy had a different style of coaching. He tended to try to get under the other coach’s skin. That happened in my case.” Ryan’s distaste for the Cowboys began during the 1987 NFL strike year when Tom Landry played some veteran players, including Tony Dorsett and Randy White, against Ryan’s pickups.

Shell helped restore the winning tradition in Los Angeles. The Raiders returned to the playoffs for the first time in five years as their former star tackle and 1989 inductee into the Hall of Fame guided them to a 12-4 record. Since he took over for Mike Shanahan after four games in 1989, the Raiders are 19-9. BEHIND SHELL IN the voting were Miami’s Don Shula with 9’/2, Buffalo’s Marv Levy (9), Chicago’s Mike Ditka (8), San Francisco’s George Seifert (8), Kansas City’s Marty Schottenheimer (5), Seattle’s Chuck Knox (4) and Pittsburgh’s Chuck Noll (2).

Bills’ braced-up QB will try to play

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) Jim Kelly’s first practice after three weeks of rehabilitating an injured knee brought a surprising reaction from some of the Buffalo Bills teammates he’s helped lead into the playoffs for the third straight year. “I think everybody laughed at me,” Kelly said. THE LAUGHTER WAS because of the stilted nature of Kelly’s gait as he struggled to get used to a heavy-duty knee brace he hopes will allow him to start in Saturday’s AFC playoff game against the Miami Dolphins. “I wasn’t sure how much to really press on it or show what I could do because you don’t know how much you can do until you loosen up and get into a rhythm,” Kelly said Tuesday. “At the beginning, I didn’t know if it (the knee) was going to pop out. But by the end of the practice, it was pretty good.” Kelly, who suffered cartilage and ligament

damage in his left knee during a Dec. 15 game against the New York Giants, said he was “very happy with my progress.” But he stopped short of saying he would be ready for Saturday’s game. “I’M GOING TO go if I can go,” Kelly said. “I’m not going to go if I feel it’s going to hinder me for the rest of my career. This is a big game and if there’s any way I can play, I’m going to play.” Team physician Dr. Richard Weiss on Monday said Kelly was “going to play this weekend, I’m sure. He’s right on schedule and there’s no reason to think anything else.” But Kelly, after practicing for several hours in the team’s practice bubble outside Rich Stadium, said, “It’s my decision, 100 percent.” “Doctors sometimes say some things they don’t really know 100 percent,” Kelly added. “Dr. Weiss ... is not in my body. He doesn’t feel what my knee feels.”

Benjamin leads Clippers by Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A little hard work and killer instinct can go a long way, according to Benoit Benjamin, who scored a season-high 25 points and pulled down a season-high 20 rebounds for the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers ended a sevengame losing streak and nine-game road skid Tuesday night by handing Indiana its third straight defeat, 122-107. “WE FOUND THAT killer instinct and didn’t let up, said Benjamin. “We’ve been in a slump, and we were determined to work our way out of it tonight. That’s why we didn’t give up.” Danny Manning also scored 25 points for the Clippers, also a season-high for him. “We had a job to do, and we did it,” said Manning. “The entire team did a great job. It’s good to get a win like this, especially on the road.” Manning broke a 90-90 tie with a lipin with 9:37 left in the fourth quarter to send Los Angeles on a 14-2 run for a 104-92 lead. The Clippers went on to a 119-101 lead with less than 2 minutes left. “THAT WAS A total embarrassment,” said Indiana coach Bob Hill. ‘‘Why we would come out and

COACH MARV LEVY also said a decision on whether Kelly plays or not will not be made by Weiss. “Dr. Weiss isn’t going to deterime who plays,” Levy said. “What Dr. Weiss said is he was given the physical OK to play, that’s what he said.” Nonetheless, Levy said he was optimistic about Kelly’s availability for the Dolphins’ game. “Overall, I would be encouraged by what I saw him do in practice today, without saying there’s anything definitive,” Levy said. “He’s listed as questionable, because he’d have to continue to make this kind of progress during the week. But I was encouraged by what I saw.” KELLY SAID HE participated in a variety of drills during the team’s practice. It was Kelly’s first playing time since suffering the injury. “I felt pretty good,” he said. “I didn’t do everything today.

Colts fire offensive coaches INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - ndianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Larry Kennan and offensive line coach Dante Scamecchia have been fired. The club does not anticipate any further changes with the coaching staff, a team spokesman said Tuesday. Both Kennan and Scamecchia had been with the Colts two years. Offensive backfield coach Leon Burtnett has been mentioned as a likely candidate to replace Kennon as offensive coordinator. Colts’ Hunter arrested in bar INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A Jan. 16 appearance in Municipal Court was set for Indianapolis Colts running back Ivy Joe Hunter after his arrest on a charge of criminal trespass at a westside bar, a Marion County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said. A bartender at Claude & Annie’s on West Pike Plaza Road called the sheriff’s office Tuesday after a disturbance at the bar between Hunter, a companion, and a third man, according to authorities.
