By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor High school boys basketball action resumes Friday night for at least three of the four Putnam County teams, but none of them play at home and the same goes for Saturday’s schedule. FRIDAY NIGHT, Greencastle travels to West Vigo for its final pre-conference game, North Putnam goes to Edgewood for a West Central Conference game and South Putnam visits Rockville in a non-conference battle. Saturday night, Greencastle opens its WCC schedule with a trip to Owen Valley, South Putnam journeys to South Vermillion and North Putnam goes to Riverton Parke. Cloverdale does not play this weekend. The Clovers resume action Jan. 11 at Southmont. THE WEST CENTRAL Conference race could begin to heat up this weekend. Cascade leads the league with a 4-0 record, but does not play any games this weekend after being upset by Avon in the Hendricks County Tournament Wednesday night. North Putnam and Owen Valley are both 1-0 and Greencastle is just starting its league schedule. South
Cubs stay on record pace at NP
By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ROACHDALE Laura Ledbetter and Jenny Black continued their attack on the Greencastle High School girls basketball recordbook Thursday night at North Putnam High School. Ledbetter scored 29 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots and Black scored 19 points and passed out eight assists while leading the Tiger Cubs to a 74-48 West Central Conference victory over the Cougars. LEDBETTER, WHO HIT 13-of-25 shots from the floor in an offshooting performance, now has 1,029 points. The junior center goes into Monday night’s home game against Northview needing just nine points to pass Allison Leer and become the all-time scoring leader in Greencastle girls basketball history. Black is making at run at Greencastle’s record for career assists. The senior guard’s exact total was not available after the game, but coach Glen Hile noted she is averaging eight assists per game this season. Those outstanding performances, plus a 10-point night from Angie Hood and seven from Amber Asher increased Greencastle’s overall record to 8-2 and WCC mark to 5-1 despite an 11-day holiday layoff. GREENCASTLE’S RECORD attackers and 23-point victory margin, however, did not overshadow the play of North Putnam forward Julie Foley. The 5-foot-10 senior muscled up 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds despite being surrounded by Tiger Cubs all night “She’s tough, really tough,” Hile said of Foley’s performance inside. But Foley was North’s only consistent offensive weapon. “We still need to improve our passing,” coach Jana Buser said after her Cougars fell to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference. THIS GAME WAS decided in the first quarter. Greencastle hit 10-of-14 shoots from the floor by passing the ball for open shots. “We wanted to work on our passing and not made back decisions,” coach Hile said. “We really did a nice job in the first quarter. “We’re not normally a quick
Boilermakers will take ugly victory
EVANSTON, 111. (AP) Purdue coach Gene Keady found the early going difficult against Northwestern but was all smiles at the end. The Boilermakers held off the Wildcats 73-70 Thursday night in the Big Ten opener for both schools. PURDUE DID NOT look like the team that missed a share of the title last season by losing to Michigan Slate on the last day of the season. “It was kind of ugly,” said Keady. “But we survived it. The main thing is we won on the road. I’m always amazed when a team wins on the road in the Big Ten.” “We played awfully tentative,” Keady said. “We played to keep from losing instead of to win.” SENIOR FORWARD Jimmy Oliver scored a career-high 23

Tigers and Titans renew growing rivalry
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Two of the nation’s top NCAA Division 111 basketball team from the 1989-90 Tournament renew a growing rivalry at 3 p.m. Saturday at DePauw University’s Lilly Center. Last March, DePauw’s Tigers and Illinois Wesleyan’s Titans played in the championship game of the NCAA Division 111 West-Midwest Sectional Tournament at Minneapolis, Minn, for the right to play in the Final Four. DePauw’s Tigers won that contest 68-65 and advanced to the Final Four berth. That was the second game between the two in one season decided by one field goal. Troy Greenlee hit a three-pointer to lift DePauw to a 67-65 win over Illinois Wesleyan last January at Bloomington, 111. DePauw, of course, returns all five starters from that team. Brett Crist scored 22 points in that tourney meeting, Moose Hccko had 16 points and 14

score board with a putback at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter and Heather Kiger hit a trey to cut the margin to 10-5. That was as close as the Cougars ever got. Greencastle took a 22-9 lead into the second period before North put together a rally to close within eight. Rita Hess came off the bench to hit a three-pointer and, with the Cougars in a full-court press, Foley stole the ball and scored a layup to cut the gap to 24-16. BLACK RESPONDED FOR Greencastle by dribbling through
Purdue (9-2, 1-0) led just 31-29 at the half but opened the second with an 8-2 run for a 39-31 lead. But the Wildcats (5-5, 0-1) clawed back and cut the lead to three, 5148, when Todd Leslie hit a 3pointer from the right comer at 9:08. NORTHWESTERN COULD get no closer, but they didn’t get much further back, either. lan Stanback’s free throw with 54 seconds left gave Purdue its biggest lead in the second half, 68-59. Leslie’s 3-pointer at the buzzer closed the gap. “It came down to three possessions either way,” said Wildcats coach Bill foster. “A steal, a turnover, a basket underneath...” “Tonight was a learning experience of a lot of people on our • team,” said Northwestern co-cap-
rebounds, Greenlee 10, David Ferrell nine and Brad Brownell eight Illinois Wesleyan returns eight players, including 6-foot-4 forward Dave Kunka, who scored 20 points in the tourney. Also back for the Titans are starting guards Brian Martin and Jeff Hay. But this is 1991. DePauw stands 8-3 after Wednesday’s 74-71 loss at lUPUI, shooting just 44 percent from the floor. Illinois Wesleyan enters with a 4.6 record and a two-game losing streak, falling 90-86 at Florida Tech and 94-73 at Tampa. Brownell is “questionable” for the contest, according to DePauw trainer Rex Call. Brownell suffered a sprained ankle five minutes into the second half at lUPUI. This is DePauw’s final tuneup before opening defense of its Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championship Tuesday at Rose-Hulman.
the press for a layup. That put the Tiger Cubs into a double-figure lead for the remainder of the game. Hile was happy to see Black put a big scoring night together with her passing. “She’s starting to play the way Jenny Black can play,” the coach said. After leading 39-24 at halftime, Greencastle’s advantage bounced between 18 and 23 points the entire second half. The Cubs led 52-31 going into the final period. SHOOTING WAS North’s biggest problem. The Cougars shot just 31 percent (19-62) from the floor and only 44 percent (8-18) at the free throw line. Greencastle’s junior varsity improved its record to 10-1 with a 3313 victory over North Putnam. Tina Regnier scored eight points to lead the balanced Tiger Cubs offense and Jill Clodfclter added six. Scobee scored seven of North’s 13 points. North’s next game is Jan. 10 at home against county rival Cloverdale.
