Auburn TD at 0:39 puts end to Hoosiers’ Peach Bowl dream

ATLANTA (AP) Auburn ended the year on a winning note in the Peach Bowl when freshman quarterback Stan White scored with 39 seconds remaining, but it might not have happened except for the daring play-calling of offensive coordinator Pat Sullivan. “It was a great call by coach Sullivan,” White said. “I don’t know if I would’ve made that call.” WHITE SCORED on a bootleg when he faked to tailback Darrell Williams who ran to his right into the line, then took off alone around left end and raced into the end zone from one yard out on a fourth-and-goal for a 27-23 victory over Indiana. “Victor (tight end Hall) did a great job screening off their comerback, and I went in easily,” said White, who was the Tigers’ offensive MVP, passing for 351 yards and scoring Auburn’s first touchdown on a 6-yard run. He also threw an 11-yard TD to Alex Smith. Jim Von Wyl added field goals of 26 and 43 yards for the Tigers, who ended the season at 8-3-1. INDIANA (6-5-1) had taken its only lead with 2:26 remaining at 23-20 when quarterback Trent

third TD, and with White throwing for 67 yards in the drive, moved to Indiana’s 5-yard line. A pass was incomplete before Smith ran for four yards and James Joseph was stopped for no-gain at the 1-yard line, before White’s TD. “We had two minutes and three time outs,” White said. “I said in the huddle, ‘Look guys. This is it. This is what it’s all about.” “He was very poised and confident in the huddle,” said Hall, who had a career-high nine receptions for 74 yards. “He didn’t get rattled at all.” THE BIG PLAY ON the drive said Indiana coach Bill Mallory was White’s 23-yard completion to Herbert Casey on a third-and-10 play from Aubum’s 28. “That play on third down was really key,” Mallory said. “We just weren’t able to get to their receiver. The footing was not good, but that’s part of the game.” Casey had two other catches on the drive, 7 and 13 yards, and finished with seven receptions for 159 yards. “He was a little in the doghouse. Maybe he played himself out of it a little bit today,” Auburn coach Pat Dye said.
