Nelson led DePauw’s defense with 12 tackles in the Monon Bell Game, a feat that earned him not only the Monon Bell MVP for Defense Award, but also ICAC Player of the Week. BEAULIEU AND NELSON were named All-ICAC earlier. DePauw captured the ICAC championship with a 7-0 record and led the league in total defense and rushing defense. The two juniors are past recipients of DePauw’s Presidential Scholarship, the highest honor awarded by DePauw to students who demonstrate the highest level of academic excellence and leadership potential. Both are also currently Management Fellows at DePauw.

The Cubs went to the half with an 18-8 lead. “We played aggressive defense tonight,” Spencer said. The third quarter didn’t get any belter for the Eagles, as they turned the ball over on their first three possessions. Greencastle converted the turnovers into five points before the Eagles could call a timeout with 4:07 left in the quarter. THE EAGLES FINALLY scored with 3:41 left in the third quarter to end the Greencasde run at 21-0. The Tiger Cubs finished the quarter on top 33-17. South’s offense came alive behind Chris Williams in the fourth quarter. The Eagles opened the quarter with 7-0 run to cut the Greencastle lead to 12 points, but never got closer. The Tiger Cubs matched the Eagles basket for basket. Greencasde, now 4-0, shot 42 percent from the floor and won the batde of the boards 37-28. The Eagles, who fell to 2-2, shot only 31 percent from the field and 55 percent from the free throw line. “WE WENT TO the offensive boards well tonight,” Spencer said. Brian Branigan led the Tiger Cubs with 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Jarrod Duff added 12 points. The Eagles had only one player in double figures.
