Looking Back Never look back, the adage goes. I only question the word “never.” The older you get, the more you realize that “looking back” can be good for you. Looking back now and then makes you feel better. We have a tendency to think about the happier things we did. We like to remember the kids at school, the games we enjoyed, the ways in which we observed the holidays. Looking back is a non-addictive way to get a glow on. When I began writing this column in 1974, I decided to deal with anything that would help a reader to live a satisfying retirement and old age. Whenever I have written about a memory based in our generation’s time of ’growing up’ roughly, the years between 1915 and 1941, my reader mail has gone up. Readers want to tell me about the experiences they share with me about the old time soda fountain at the drug store, the Valentine box at school, the noisier Fourth of July, buying the family care, and so on. This has caused me to think that my readers might like to have a “collection of these recollections” that they can take as a daily “memory tonic” and, at the same time, catch up with some of the memory pieces they may have missed. To do this, I am self-publishing a book of more than 50 such columns under the “Looking Back” title and making it available to readers at cost cluding postage. It occurs to me also that “Looking Back” might be an ideal gift, for relatives and

Dear Abby
Sexual abuse of children is commoner than you think
DEAR ABBY: When I married Roy (not his real name), I had two daughters, ages 9 and 5, from a previous marriage. Roy began to sexually molest the older one. It was almost two years before she told me about it. She told because she was afraid that her younger sister was in danger of being molested, too. Abby, this was a terrible shock to me. I knew things like this happened to children, but I never believed it could happen in my family. 1 am now divorced from Roy, and my children are doing well after much counseling. Although Roy was indicted by a grand jury, he jumped bail before going to trial and has been missing for almost a year. It upsets me to know that he is out there somewhere, probably with a new identity, and he may be sexually abusing other unsuspecting children. I am writing this to alert others to this possible danger. It’s far more common than most people suspect. TEXAS MOM

DEAR MOM: Thank you for sharing your experience so that I can once again tell my readers that their best insurance against child molestation is to educate their children early. They should be taught that their bodies are private, and if somebody tries to touch their bodies, they should tell their parents immediately. Children must be assured that if anyone makes them promise not to tell anyone, that is one promise it is all right to break.

friends of the 1915-41 “younger generation” who now are old and difficult to “think of something for.” I can mail copies direct to such people if you will give me their names and addresses or send the books to you for remailing as you may direct. In going through the common habits and experiences of our earlier days, it has impressed me anew what tremendous changes have come in our lifetime. Yet how fortunate we are to have grown up in a day when life was less demanding, distracting, and competitive but more encouraging to individual creativity. We had to create much of our entertainment in playing out and making up our own games. And so we did. We had to learn arithmetic with devices like multiplication tables and to read and spell by sounding out words and noting the exceptions. And so we did. We had to be happy with penny candy, a plain old ordinary bicycle, touch football under the arc light, fishing with bamboo pole and hook of a canoe dock. And so we were. But there is a snuggly, deliciously immodest satisfaction in recalling how it was when we were kids, high school and college students, romancers, first job seekers. We were those youngsters as well as today’s oldsters right in the same mind and body. In that recognition, there comes a new sense of our individualism. Send your “Looking Back” book order direct to me at 1704 High Street, Las Cruces, New Mexico 88001. I will not deposit your check or cash until your ordei is in the mail.

DEAR ABBY: Would it be appropriate to send a Christmas card to an old boyfriend I haven’t spoken to in eight years? We are both married, and even though I love my husband. I still have feelings for this man. I want him to know that I still think of him, and I don’t want him to forget me. Even though he never told me he loved me, we were lovers for nearly a year. I would include a recent picture of myself and also an update of what I’ve been doing since he last saw me. I would send it to his office so as not to arouse any questions from his wife. Thanks for any advice you can give me. FOND MEMORIES DEAR FOND MEMORIES: Do yourself and your old boyfriend a favor and resist the urge to reestablish communication with him. No good can come of rekindling this old flame. Be content with your “fond memories.” What

was, was. * ♦ ♦ To get to the point, I started seeing a 68-year-old widow who lives in my condo complex. We go to dinner, theater, concerts, etc. We are good company for each other, but the flak we are getting from some of our neighbors is very upsetting. What is your opinion of this? Do I have the right to enjoy my life? And what about the woman I’m seeing? Does she have the right to date me a married man? SINGLE, BUT NOT SINGLE DEAR SINGLE, BUT: Since there is no hope for your wife’s recovery, and she no longer recognizes you, I see no reason why you and your neighbor can’t enjoy each other’s company. Easing the burden of loneliness isn’t desertion, so don’t allow anyone to lay a guilt trip on you. Read on for the flip side of your situation:
