Penn State may nix bowl over M.L. King Day STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Universities normally welcome bowl bids for their football teams, but Penn State may have a decision to make if the Nittany Lions are offered a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. Jim Tarman, Penn State’s athletic director, said the rejection of the Martin Luther King holiday by Arizona voters “would be a concern” if the team is invited to play in the Jan. 1 game in Tempe. PENN STATE HAS BEEN among several contenders for a Fiesta Bowl bid. The bowl pays about $2.5 million to participating teams. Penn State has had a declining minority enrollment, falling 13 percent in the past two years. “In conversations with the Fiesta Bowl, we had mentioned the Martin Luther King vote would be something we would have to look at,” Tarman told The Pittsburgh Press. Penn State may have an alternative. Blockbuster Bowl managing director Keith Tribble called a Penn State-Florida State match-up in its inaugural game in Miami Dec. 28 “a very, very viable option.”
Tiger Cubs
from the lead. The Cubs could not sustain a drive to the end zone. Mater Dei got the football back with 5:09 left in the contest and ate up three minutes with a 73-yard touchdown drive. Eric J. Folz’s 11-yard run gave Mater Dei a 40-24 lead with just 1:49 to play. AS MANY FANS headed for the exits and the warmth of their homes, the Tiger Cubs put together the final touchdown drive and an all-out effort to extend their season. Thomas ran for 14 yards and Resner threw to Steadmon for a second 38-yard pass. Resner flipped a six-yard pass to Homier for the touchdown and followed with a two-point conversion pass to Jellison to set the final margin. With 12 seconds left to play, Greencastle tried an on-side kickoff. Mater Dei recovered the ball to secure next week’s semistate game contest with Indianapolis Scecina in Evansville.
