Dear Abby

Good Samaritan feels sting of neighbors’ wagging tongues

DEAR ABBY: This may be a first for you. I am a man in my late 50s, divorced, living happily alone by choice, and am well-respected in my community. I have no problems. But society has a tremendous problem. If I found a hungry, homeless dog along the highway and brought it home, fed it and provided for it, everyone would say, “What a kind, generous man you are. God bless you!” But if I found a hungry, homeless human being along the highway who happens to be a middle-aged Native American woman, and I brought her home and fed and provided for her, gave her her own bedroom, and tried to find a job for her, I am called “a dirty old man”! This is precisely what happened to me. When dirty tongues wag, and they will, how do I respond? Should I put her back on the highway and say, “Sorry, lady, but our society does not approve”? This is for real, Abby, but please don’t print my name or address. Jusl sign me ... SOCIETY’S PROBLEM DEAR SOCIETY’S PROBLEM Unless your friends and neighbors are told something about this woman who is living in your

home, they will be naturally curious. There are many unanswered questions here. The most obvious: What was this hungry, homeless woman doing walking on the highway? Is she an amnesia victim? Is she mentally competent? Is she running from someone? Is she a “missing person”? Is she a fugitive from justice? Stick to the truth but don’t tell anyone more than you want to. ♦ * * DEAR ABBY: You may smile at our baby, coo at her, compliment her, but please do not touch her! Our daughter is 6 weeks old, and she

accompanies us on outings to the grocery store or the mall, where wellmeaning people come up to her and without warning grab her little hands! Like most babies, our daughter is a world-class hand sucker, and whatever was on your hands gets on her hands, which go directly into her mouth! Babies’ immune systems are just developing, and the last thing they need is some unknown person spreading viruses and bacteria through touching the baby’s hands. Would these strangers expect us to allow them to put their fingers into our daughter’s mouth? So, the next time you see a darling little baby, please don’t put the parents in the position of having to say, “Please don’t touch the baby!” THOMAS FUNK, OR “KEEPING IT CLEAN IN ELK GROVE, CALIF.” DEAR KEEPING: You make an excellent point. I am reminded of a campaign the Mayo Clinic launched some years ago in an effort to remind people to wash their hands. They posted enormous signs with the following message: “The 10 Greatest

Heloise Tea pot serves gravy for crowd

GRAVY SERVER Dear Heloise: While preparing dinner for a large family gathering of over 20 people, my son made what I thought wa? an excellent suggestion: Put the gravy in a large tea pot. It was marvelous! We had plenty of gravy to go around without constant refills and it stayed warm with the tea cozy on the pot. Dorothy Hames, Ontario, Canada STUCK CAKE Q. I have trouble with cake layers sticking to the pan if I let them sit until they’re completely cooled. I hate for them to come out in pieces. Is there anything I can do when this happens? Joy Speer, Boca Raton, Fla. A. Put the layer into a warm oven again briefly. When the bottom of the pan is warmed, remove from the oven and turn the layer out immediately onto a cooling rack. The shortening used to grease the pan will be softened and release the cake. Heloise SOUP STOCK Dear Heloise: I make soup stock without salt, just lots of herbs for seasoning. I freeze part of it in an icecube tray, then store the cubes in a selfsealing plastic bag in the freezer. Whenever I want to season a dish, I just add a cube of stock instead of salt. Mary MacDonald, San Anselmo, Calif. KEEPING CANDY Dear Readers: One last note on Halloween, since many of you have asked. Yes, you can store candy. It keeps almost indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place, preferably in a sealed container so it won’t attract pests. Soft candy bars and chocolate can also be frozen. So you :an safely hide some of the trick-or-treat

Spreaders of Disease” then portrayed a pair of hands. * * ♦ DEAR ABBY: One of my doctors charges $95 for a 15-minute office call. When you leave the office, the lady at the desk says, “We’ll take care of your Medicare form.” When I received the Medicare information, there was an indication of two surgeries during that office call, one for SSO and one for $45. I had no surgery. I suppose he does this to get me a better reimbursement for my costs. However, it is hard for me not to consider it fraud. On my second visit, the same thing happened, with the same amounts. Should I report this to Medicare? PUZZLED IN PASADENA DEAR PUZZLED: No. First, call your physician’s office manager and ask for an explanation. It may be a matter of coding for Medicare. If you are not satisfied with the explanation, then report your physician, but first give him the chance to explain why Medicare was billed for two surgeries that were not performed.

loot for your family to enjoy later. Heloise LINEN CALENDAR Dear Heloise: After reading about the lady who saved linen calendar towels for years, I decided to send along a hint. I made the calendars that I saved into quilts for my great-grandchildren. They just love them and they’re so easy to make. Just stitch them together with colored crochet cotton. N.S., Clinton, Maine WALKING ROCKING CHAIR Q. What can be done to keep a wooden rocking chair from “walking” when I rock in it? I have two, and one moves sideways and the other moves backward until you bump into something and have to get up and move the chair back into place. Frustrated in Pennsylvania A. Go to the nearest fabric store and purchase a couple of yards of velvet ribbon. Turn the rocking chairs over and put glue on the bottom of the rocker arms. Then put the velvet ribbon, velvet side out, along the length of each arm and trim off any excess. Allow the glue to dry completely, then tum the rocking chairs right side up. Now you’re ready to rock without going anywhere! Heloise
