By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor WEST TERRE HAUTE The Greencastle Tiger Cubs played their best match of the season Saturday afternoon to qualify for the championship contest of the West VigoIHSAA Volleyball Regional, but couldn’t duplicate it that night against the West Vigo Vikings. After ending White River Valley’s season with a 15-8, 15-8 pounding, the Tiger Cubs fell to West Vigo 15-13,4-15,15-7. “NEVER DISAPPOINTED, only broken hearted,” coach Trish Arthur said after West Vigo ended Greencastle’s surprising 23-5 season. Greencastle is the last team to beat the now 17-7 Vikings, that coming in the Danville Tournament. “I think we could beat that

Stark wins two titles, swims on winning relays
NEW MARKET Greencastle High School’s Susan Stark is state championship meet bound as double-event champion from the Southmont-IHSAA Girls Swimming Sectional and she won’t be alone. Greencastle’s “fab four” of Stark, Lisa Condon, Beth Haymaker and Kelly Nealon also put together two sectional championships races and qualified for the Nov. 2 and 3 IHSAA State Championship Meet at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. CRAWFORDSVILLE, WITH six sectional championships and as many as three swimmers in the championship races, easily won the nine-team meet. The Athenians scored 352 points and Greencastle finished second with 267. South Putnam finished ninth with 58 points. North Putnam’s swimmers and divers withdrew after Thursday’s preliminaries to compete in the state band contest “We had an outstanding meet,” Greencastle coach Paul Bretscher said. “School records were set by Susan (Stark) in the 50-free the first one of Carrie Nealon’s records (set in 1985) to fall. Beth Haymaker (set a record) in the 100breaststroke Diana Duncan (1985) held the old record of 1:13.89. “And the 200-freestyle relay team of Condon, Nealon, Haymaker and Stark (broke their own school record),” the coach added.

team,” coach Arthur said. “We just couldn’t get it going.” The Tiger Cubs could not keep up a consistent attack. Balls fell to the floor several times during the match while the Tiger Cubs looked at one another. “I think the crowd was a factor. They just were capable of hearing,” Arthur said. GREENCASTLE BUILT AN 8-2 lead in game one on Laura Ledbetter’s serve, but West Vigo rallied to tie the contest 11-11. The score was tied 13-13 before the Vikings scored the final two points. The Tiger Cubs dominated game two. With Jenny Black serving, the Tiger Cubs built a 9-2 lead, as Ledbetter blocked two Viking spikes and put down two of her own and Minako Honma hammered a kill to the back comer. Points came grudgingly for both
Busch were eliminated. Gamer, a freshman, finished 22nd in the 4,000-meter girls race. Koosman, a senior, finished 30th. Busch, who marched in the state band contest before driving to Franklin Central for the semistate, finished 22nd.
SUSAN STARK Double champion
STARK WAS THE only swimmer in the sectional to win two individual events and swim on two sectional championship relay teams. The anticipated showdown between Stark and Crawfordsville’s Debi Humphrey was decided by less than three-tenths of a second. Stark won the race in a Greencastle school record time of 25.34 seconds and Humphrey was second in 25.63 seconds. Stark easily won the 100freestyle in 56.27 seconds, but the first five swimmers finished under under a minute. SOUTH PUTNAM’S Amanda Phillips finished sixth in both the 50- and 100-freestyles. Tigers win sixth straight game
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor A DePauw University football team that opened the season without a particular reputation is developing one for a pounding, and explosive running attack and relentless defensive front four. Terry Dickey ran for 120 yards and Graham Glander 91 Saturday afternoon and the defensive front was battered Franklin quarterback Reece Mann time and time again, as the Tigers crushed the Grizzlies 49-21 at Blackstock Stadium. WITH THEIR SIXTH straight victory, the ligers moved to within one win of clinching a share of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. DePauw will play Hanover at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis as part of the ICAC’s “Day at the Dome.” All four contests, the first beginning at 9:30 a.m., can be seen for $5 and tickets are available at the DePauw Athletic Department. After Franklin intercepted two Brad Toone passes in the first half, and tied the game 14-14 on the opening possession of the third quarter when Mann threw a 34yard bullet of a pass to a streaking John Myers, the Tigers took total command of this contest. DEPAUW SCORED FIVE straight touchdowns to take a 49-14 lead with 5:07 left in the contest. “We did what we wanted to do,” coach Nick Mourouzis said. “We wanted to control the time of pos-
teams in game three. From a 1-1 tie, West Vigo took a 4-2 lead and gradually chipped its way to a 12-2 lead. GREENCASTLE TRIED TO put together a rally, Honma serving two points with the help of a Black kill and Ledbetter hammered a kill that closed the gap to 13-5. Black, a senior, served Greencastle’s final two points before West Vigo won its first ever girls regional championship in any sport. It was a frustrating loss to coach Arthur. “I look at the statistics and I just can’t put my finger on it (why we lost),” Arthur said. Greencastle served 93 percent (54-58) for the match. Black led the Tiger Cubs with 13 points, followed by Ledbetter with 10, Honma five, Karen Emberton and Amber Asher three each and Jill Billman one. AGAINST WHITE RIVER Valley, the Tiger Cubs were as good as any team Arthur has had to coach. “Our match against White River Valley was our best for the whole year. Everything fell into place,” Arthur said. “I’m not sure it wasn’t the best in my seven years of coaching.” Greencastle served 96 percent (50-52) for the match and was 81 percent (38-47) attacking with 10 kills.

Crawfordsville’s Star Smith easily won the event in 1:09.75. Haymaker and Condon could receive invitations to the state championship meet as individuals with among the top 32 sectional performances. CONDON, GREENCASTLE’S only senior finished second in the 200-freestyle with a 2:07.34 performance and also took third in the 100-butterfly at 1:06.06. Franklin ran 71 offensive plays in 26 minutes of possession time. “The key to the game was our offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage,” Mourouzis praised. DICKEY, WHO PLAYED quarterback in the third quarter, carried the football 27 times for 120 yards, his third 100-yard game of the season. The junior tailback now has 1,715 career rushing yards and 116 career points. Defensively, the game turned in the second half because DePauw shut down the screen pass Franklin’s Mann repeatedly dumped off to running back Bill Brinkman. Five times in the first half, Mann took advantage of DePauw’s heavy pass rush and dumped the ball off to Brinkman. “The first half, everytime we’d send a linebacker, he (Mann) knew exactly when it was coming. He threw screen passes and ran draws right by us,” DePauw defensive coordinator Tim Hreha said. THE SECOND HALF, inside linebacker Matt Nelson called the blitz at the line of scrimmage. “The second half ‘Coach (Matt) Nelson’ did a nice job. He made the calls on the line which kind of helped us out a little bit,” Hreha said. Mann, who finished the first half on the sideline with a bruised

fordsville was every bit as close as the 50-freestyle finish. Greencastle’s team of Condon, Haymaker, Nealon and Stark won in 1:45.48 and Crawfordsville team of Humphrey, DeLynn Cook, Denise DeSmet and Smith was right behind in 1:45.53. ’> Condon, Nealon, Haymaker and Stark won the 400-freestyle much easier, but it was still close. shoulder, took the Grizzlies 66 yards in just three plays and only 55 seconds to tie the game 14-14. “That seemed to get our guys a little angry,” coach Hreha said. When Franklin fumbled a Jeff Francis punt and Eric Hopp recovered the loose ball, DePauw took advantage of the opportunity to control the football and take the lead. Taking possession at Franklin’s 15-yard line, the Tigers ran the football four times, fullback Jayson Stadler leaping into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. UNEBACKER GREG Jacobs and and tackle Tom Beaulieu pinned Franklin to its own 1-yard line with 16-yards in losses on back to back plays. Franklin punted and DePauw took possession on the Grizzlies’ 34-yard line with Dickey at quarterback. Dickey ran right the first two downs, then the Tigers caught Franklin’s defense by surprise with a fullback trap that Glander took for a 19-yard touchdown. Mike Giunta’s PAT kick made it 28-12. With Dickey at quarterback DePauw was obviously committed to running the football. That is exactly why, with Toone back at quarterback, Joe Pindell was open for a slant-in pass for a touchdown that made it 35-14. THE MARGIN GREW wider as Franklin tried to pass against the pressure of tackles Kris Gruner and Beaulieu and ends Al Hackbarth and Craig Evans. Under their pressure Franklin’s Mann threw three
