Reds, O’Neill even NL playoff series
CINCINNATI (AP)—lt was as if they’d planned it. The Cincinnati Reds were as nasty as they wanted to be Friday afternoon, beating Pittsburgh 2-1 in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series at Riverfront Stadium. The series is now tied 1-1 and moves to Pittsburgh on Monday. The Reds evened things Friday by denting Pirates ace Doug Drabek ever so slightly. Paul O’Neill had an off-the-fists RBI single in the first inning and a solid RBI double in the fifth. Then Cincinnati’s flame-throw-ing “Nasty Boys” bullpen guarded the slim lead like mother hens. “They got that name for a reason,” said Pittsburgh Manager Jim Leyland. “They’re all nasty when they come in. They’re aggressive pitchers. They’re outstanding, no doubt about it.” Pittsburgh’s only score came from an unlikely source. Jose Lind, who’s only other homer this season

But that was it. All week Cincinnati Manager Lou Piniella said his starters would have to reach the sixth inning with a lead. Then he’d let the Nasties finish the Pirates off. That didn’t work in Thursday’s 4-3 loss. But on Friday, Browning left with a 2-1 lead after six innings, yielding only six hits. Nasty right-hander Rob Dibble got the next four outs and gave way to lefty Randy Myers, who got the save. At the plate, O’Neill was the only guy to cause Drabek any nastiness. The decisive blow was his double, which soared into a bright sun over left fielder Barry Bonds and bounced off the base of the wall. It scored Herm Winningham, who had stole second base after reaching on a fielder’s choice. Defensively, right fielder O’Neill helped guard his game-winner by gunning down Andy Van Slyke at third base on a sixth-inning double play. Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla

had opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Browning struck out R.J. Reynolds to end the threat. “You can save runs in the outfield just as easy as you can drive them in,” said O’Neill, who was 2-for-4 at bat. Reds shortstop Barry Larkin thwarted the Pirates only other chances in the ninth. He went deep into the hole to nab grounders by Bonds and Sid Bream. “That’s why we led the National League in fielding,” Piniella said. Drabek, the Cy Young favorite at 22-6, pitched masterfully, allowing five hits in eight innings. He struck out eight. But he was supported by only six hits. Pittsburgh had two men on with one out or less in three innings against Browning. But pickoffs, failed stolen bases and strikeouts quelled those rallies. “Today we had our ace and he pitched a great ball game,” Leyland said of Drabek. “Offensively, we just got shut down.”
