Hudnut proposes finance reform
: INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - ndianapolis Mayor William H. Hudnut wants state legislators to approve campaign finance reforms lhat would increase the frequency :of finance reporting and put limits :on some contributions. ; However, the state Democratic Chairman contends Hudnut has become a late convert to campaign finance reform only because he trails his November opponent, Democrat Joseph H. Hogsett, in raising money for their campaigns for secretary of state. AT A SERIES of news conferences across the state Wednesday, Hudnut proposed a four-point reform package he claimed would bring “broader, more timely disclosure that is in the best interest of the people’s right to know how candidates are financing their campaigns.” Hudnut’s proposal would: Require statewide and legislative candidate committees, state party committees and legislative caucus political committees to file quarterly finance reports with an additional report 20 days before the election. Also, committees would have to report within two days any contribution of SI,OOO or more received within 20 days of an election. ; Current law requires an annual
Aspirin may prevent migraines
CHICAGO (AP) An aspirin every other day may help prevent migraines among some of the millions of Americans who suffer the excruciating headaches, scientists reported today. The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association are from the same study that found ; aspirin effective in preventing a first : heart attack. : THE RESEARCHERS found ; that a group of men who took one '.aspirin every other day reported 20 percent fewer migraines than a similar group that took a dummy tablet. Headache experts called the research results encouraging. But they said aspirin could offer, at best, only a partial solution to the

report of political committees plus reports filed before the primary and general elections. LIMIT POLITICAL action committee contributions to $5,000 per year to statewide candidate committees and state party committees. Currently, corporation and union donations to legislative campaigns are capped, but PAC contributions are not.
migraine puzzle. Nevertheless, “there’s enough evidence here that health-care practitioners should consider aspirin for migraine treatment,” said Julie E. Buring, leader of the team at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital that reported the findings. AN ESTIMATED 20 percent of American adults suffer migraines. Headache experts say there is no known single cause of migraines. The severe headaches, often accompanied by nausea, appear to be triggered in some patients by certain foods and also seem related to stress and a lack of regular sleep, meals and exercise. Buring and her colleagues analyzed five years of data from the Physicians Health Study, a project
About $247 million in prizes had been given out through Sunday. Eight people have won $1 million or more in the Lotto Cash game, and 31 people have won $1 million or more on the weekly “Hoosier Millionaire” television show. Retailers who sell lottery tickets have earned $25 million. SO FAR, $125 million in lottery profits has been transferred to the state treasury. Another S4O million is scheduled to be transferred later this month. Lottery profits are used to help pay police and fire pensions and finance state and local government capital projects. Next year, some of the lottery money will go toward offsetting a cut in the auto excise tax rate.
Require disclosure of an individual’s occupation or a PAC’s purpose if the person or PAC gives more than S2OO. RESTRICT individual’s contributions in cash, as opposed to check, to a total of SIOO a year. There is no limit under current law. Hudnut said his package of proposals would bring state law more in line with federal statutes. He said the proposals will be introduced in the next session of the General Assembly by Sen. Steven Johnson, R-Kokomo, if Johnson wins a tough re-election fight. State Democratic Chairman Michael Pannos called Hudnut’s proposal “extremely hypocritical for a guy who the last time he ran (for mayor) outspent his opponent by $700,000 to $40,000. “I think he’s doing this because he’s in a tough race,” said Pannos. BY ALL ESTIMATES, including the candidates’, Hudnut trails Hogsett in fund-raising. However, under current law, neither campaign will have to disclose its fundraising for the summer and early fall months until Oct. 26. PANNOS SAID he would be willing to consider supporting some of the reforms Hudnut suggested but would not support limits on PACs if individuals aren’t going to be similarly restricted.
involving about 22,000 U.S. male physicians that began in 1982. The project is devoted to studying the effects of aspirin and beta carotene, an orange pigment found in certain fruits and vegetables, on heart disease, migraine and cancer. OF THE approximately 11,000 doctors who took aspirin, 661 reported migraines at some time after the study began compared with 818 of those who took the aspirin placebo. The researchers did not analyze the data regarding beta carotene and migraine, Buring said. She said the aspirin portion of the study ended in 1988 when the researchers felt compelled to report a finding that those on the aspirin regimen had a 44 percent lower risk of developing a first heart attack.
