MALLORY CAPACITOR CORP.: An East Side mainstay in Greencastle since its 1960 opening
Mallory Capacitor
At home on the moon and Greencastle’s Eastside
By LISA MEYER Banner-Graphic Staff Writer When the manned Apollo lunar modules landed on the moon during the 19705, Mallory capacitors were there. When an emergency necessitates that life jackets and life rafts inflate, a Mallory capacitor is probably there. When an Air Force jet flies overhead, Mallory capacitors are probably in the jet engines. WET TANTALUM capacitors manufactured at Mallory Capacitor Corp, are used all over the world and even in outer space. Located on Indianapolis Road on Greencastle’s eastern edge, Mallory continues to produce one of the same products it made when it opened its doors in 1960. Capacitors are devices which store electrical energy, unlike batteries which store chemical energy. Plant Manager Keith Green said

the rugged nature of Mallory capacitors is a major reason why the company’s product is used in the aerospace industry and in oil exploration. SOME MALLORY capacitors are now sitting on the moon. They were used in the computers that helped land NASA’s lunar modules during the manned Apollo space flights in the 19705. The landing computers were left behind when the lunar module left the moon’s surface and returned to earth. The United States Defense Department uses Mallory capacitors in many of its aircrafts in controlling jet engines, especially in the F-16 fighters and B-l bombers. The military also uses Mallory capacitors in missiles, guidance systems and communications equipment. CAPACITORS ARE also used in parachutes. It is a capacitor that

blows off a parachute when a pilot lands in water after ejecting from a plane. Capacitors are also used in life jackets and life rafts. In the civilian world, the capacitors are also used in telephone equipment, radios, pacemakers and computers. Mallory capacitors have also found a niche in the oil exploration industry since they can withstand heat and vibrations better than their competition. “They are a smaller capacitor in a smaller package that can hold up, which is very difficult for most capacitors to do,” Green said. WHILE MALLORY has several defense contracts, the company is looking to increase its “peaceful applications.” “We’re concentrating on nondefense, but we’re still very proud to serve the defense department,” Green said. All of Mallory’s capacitors use
Quality Aftermarket joins industrial scene in old fertilizer plant
By ERIC BERNSEE Banner-Graphic Editor Quality Aftermarket Inc. has taken an old Greencastle fertilizer facility and planted hopes for future growth and prosperity. While only a handful of employees are presently knocking around the 40,000-square-foot facility that last housed A. H. Hoffman Fertilizer, President Joe Corrigan envisions a 25- to 30-person operation by 1992. “We’re basically a year away from doing any manufacturing here,” he said during a recent interview at the 10th Street location that opened April 2. “Eventually, we’ll be doing manufacturing and more out of here.” PRESENTLY ALL manufacturing of Quality Aftermarket products is done at an Auburn, Mass., facility. The company is headquartered in North Haledon, N.J.

wet tantalum, made fiom the relatively rare wet tantalum ore. Most of it is mined in Canada and Australia before being shipped to Greencastle for manufacture into capacitors. CAPACITORS ARE a byproduct of the first transistors pioneered during the 19505. Mallory was able to obtain the first patent on the wet tantalum capacitors, and chose Greencastle as the production site. Green said that one of the biggest change in the industry has come in electrical equipment. The silicon chip has been the biggest innovation, he said. One of four major wet tantalum capacitor companies in the U.S., Greencastle’s Mallory employs less than 100 people, Green said. The capacitor industry is a competitive business, he said, but he expects Mallory “will be around a while.”
Managed by Dave Hurst, former owner of Mac’s men’s store, the Greencastle site is shipping parts to all 50 states and seven foreign countries. Parts are shipped into Greencastle from a network of dealers and distributors and then sent out to independent retailers and distributors. Presently most of the shipping is done via UPS, but by early spring, freight carriers will begin lining up at the six truck docks on the north side of the facility. Quality specializes in highquality replacement parts for the commercial-industrial mid-range lawnmower market. The inventory includes “a few thousand parts,” Corrigan said, mentioning such necessities as spark plugs, belts and wheel assemblies. “WE BUY A LOT of parts, ’ Continued on Page 3
