Dear Abby ‘Just Say No’ is better advice to daughter than ‘I Said Yes’

DEAR ABBY: I am the mother of a beautiful baby girl. Naturally I want to do the best job possible of raising her to be a fine girl and woman. There is one question in my mind. At some time in her life, I will have to sit down and talk to her about the importance of staying away from drugs. I need to know if I should ever use myself and my own experiences as an example. Abby, I have experimented with a variety of drugs and have learned firsthand how devastating they can be. What influence do you think it would have on my daughter if she knew? Do you think she would be more determined never to use drugs? I have been “clean” for a number of years now, but I was heavily into drugs as a teen-ager. How much should I tell her? SERIOUS IN SARATOGA DEAR SERIOUS: Yours is a very intelligent question. I would not recommend using yourself

as an “example.” Your daughter might believe that because you have experimented with drugs and were able to rehabilitate yourself, it might justify her going that route. If she asks you if you have ever experimented with drugs, don’t lie; but don’t volunteer your own experiences as a deterrent. It could backfire.

Hats off to John Faight

Three blocks east of the courthouse square is GTE’s Customer Service Center, where John Faught's staff keeps Greencastle in touch with the wond. John plans years in advance to meet our city's future communication needs. But he also appreciates the beauties of tradition. In 1989 GTE determined that a new conduit would help Greencastle prepare for growth. Installation would normally require removing and replacing pavement, but John didn’t plan a run-of-the-rmll project. He had admired the ornamental brick paving, plantings and lampposts the Historical Landmark Society of Indiana placed downtown. And he thought that as a 25-year

DEAR ABBY: Will you please tell me how long a married couple can correctly take to thank their friends and family for a wedding gift? A friend of mine who is supposed to be very knowledgeable on matters of etiquette said that a couple can take one year to send their thank-you notes for wedding gifts and still be considered within the range of good manners. She said, ideally, they should acknowledge their gifts as soon as possible perhaps within a month after returning from their honeymoon, but they have a whole year in which to do it. If you confirm that a year is acceptable, then I will not complain. STILL WAITING IN WHITTIER, CALIF. DEAR STILL WAITING: A year? Outrageous unless the lucky honeymooners were able to take six months off to go around the world. Well-mannered newlyweds will have their wedding gifts acknowledged anywhere from one to three months after they return from their honeymoon, depending on the number of gifts there were to acknowledge.

DEAR ABBY: Some dear friends of ours are being divorced after 13 years of marriage. They have two wonderful children, a cozy home, and he runs his own business. Sounds like the perfect American dream, doesn’t it? Well, it’s coming to an end soon. They filed for divorce over a year ago and are still trying to settle in court. Everyone is wondering what happened to this perfect marriage. I think I know. They didn’t believe that old tradition that it was bad luck for the groom to see his bride’s wedding dress before the ceremony. Well, he had to see it, because he made it for her! He’s a professional designer. Abby, what can be done to break a bad-luck spell? HER FRIEND IN lOWA DEAR FRIEND: The old “tradition” you refer to is merely a superstition, an old wive’s tale, and has no basis in fact. To believe that a marriage failed after 13 years because the groom saw the bride’s gown before the wedding is sheer nonsense.

member of the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, GTE could do no less. Today that conduit lies ready to supply communication services as Greencastle grows. And above it stretches an extended expanse of the brick walkway leading to the courthouse. The ornamental paving complements Greencastle's historical architecture and charms visitors and residents alike. Hats off to John and all the other GTE employees who contribute their time and talent wherever they are needed. They give new life to our community's service tradition and help us face the future with confidence. THE POWER IS ON

Cocoa adds flavor NEW YORK (AP) Cocoa, often referred to as baking cocoa, unsweetened cocoa or cocoa powder, is a basic, allnatural, baking ingredient derived from cocoa beans. Cocoa imparts chocolate flavor with little fat. It is convenient to use. Just measure directly from the can. Cocoa should be stored, tightly sealed, in its can in a cool, dry place. With proper storage, it will keep indefinitely. European-style, also called Dutchprocessed or alkalized cocoa, has undergone a process whereby some of the cocoa’s natural acidity has been removed. In recipes using this cocoa, the final product has a rich, mellow chocolate flavor.

Quick meals to heat in microwave Q. Our family isn’t all at home at the same time for dinner so I want to cook dishes like stews, soups and sauces for them to heat in the microwave when it’s most convenient for them. Do you have any suggestions that might help us? Madge Karl, Houston, Texas A. I sure do! The following hints should make it easier for everyone. Cool cooked food quickly by putting the pot in a sink filled with cold water, then freeze in individual portions. That way each person can use just the amount needed, plus heating will be faster. To make the best use of freezer space, freeze food in freezer bags, square containers or make square packages by setting filled plastic bags in something square such as rigid plastic containers, cardboard boxes or milk cartons and freezing. When the food is frozen solid, remove the package and use the container again. Be sure to label the packages, giving, contents and the date frozen or a “use by” date and put it where it’s easy to see. Write out and post the directions for the family to follow. Indicate which meals can be heated in the containers they’re in and which need to be transferred to microwave-safe bowls. Give time and settings for heating, when to turn or stir, and a reminder to let the food sit for a few minutes after cooking and before serving. With everyone’s cooperation, individual meals should be easy for all. Heloise
