North has top contender, but needs another runner
ROACHDALE North Putnam’s Roger Busch appears to be the favorite for Tuesday’s Putnam County Cross Country Meet at Cloverdale High School, but the Cougars need another runner to contend for the team title. Northview beat both South Putnam and North Putnam Wednesday afternoon in a three-team meet at North Putnam High School, but the Knights could not beat Busch. Busch toured his home course in 16:56, a victory by 43 seconds. “Roger is running real well,” coach Kevin Roy said. “He really hasn’t had a meet yet where he has had to race.” South Putnam’s Brian Pershing, who opened the year as heir apparent to the county’s cross country title, finished third with a 17:43 run. Travis Dorsett was fifth with an 18:09 and Boyd Goodson 10th in 18:49. “All year we’ve been hoping to improve enough to surprise some people in the county,” coach Roy said. Jerry Robertson finished fourth for North and Jeremy Butler sixth, but the big gap to Brent Fowler’s 16th place and another big gap to Craig Robertson’s 21st place might keep the Cougars out of contention in the county meet. Cougars swim to records
VEEDERSBURG The North Putnam High School girls swimming team bounced back from a disappointing West Central Conference Invitational with a record setting performance at Fountain Central Wednesday night. Even though the Cougars lost the meet 96-60, they still set school records in the 200- and 400-freestyle relays. The team of Shannon Smeelink, Jennifer Carmichael, Amy Weddle and Wendy Martin swam to both records. The foursome turned in a 2:04.76 winning time in the 200freestyle relay and a 4:36.0 in the 400-freestyle relay to put their names in North Putnam swimming history. “A good meet for us as the team rebounded from the conference by dropping times and

Trudeau to start for Colts INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Jack Trudeau will start at quarterback Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts take on Philadelphia, stepping in for the fifth consecutive year to replace an injured starter. This time he’ll be filling in for top draft pick Jeff George, who has had a rough three weeks in his rookie campaign. In the past Trudeau has stepped in to replace Gary Hogeboom and Chris Chandler both now wearing other NFL uniforms. “I’VE ALWAYS SAID I’m ready whenever they need me,” said Trudeau, who led the Colts to their only playoff appearance of the ’Bos when he took over as the starting quarterback in 1987. George is bothered by a lower abdominal injury. Coach Ron Meyer said he would only be used in an extreme emergency. “Physically, I’m hurting. I’m pretty sore,” George said after watching Wednesday afternoon’s practice. “It’s day-to-day or maybe week-to-week.” GEORGE MISSED SOME practice last week but Meyer gave him the starting nod. He was pulled in favor of Trudeau in the first half,

JACK TRUDEAU Stepping in again but returned to action in the fourth period after Trudeau and No. 3 quarterback Mark Herrmann were both injured. “He’ll want to go and I’ll want to play him, but I will fight that,” Meyer said. “I’ve regretted going with him down there (at Houston). Sometime you have to bite the bullet. “However, we have the luxury of having a player of Jack’s caliber to turn to.” TRUDEAU, WHO WAS openly unhappy over the Colts’ decision to draft George and sign him to a sixyear contract, has been a loyal teacher of the rookie since reporting to training camp. “I know what I lean do. I feel I can play in this league.
Walton coaching Pacers’ center
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Bill Walton, the former UCLA and NBA star, is working for the Indiana Pacers this week. Walton isn’t planning a comeback. He’s sharing his knowledge and experience with the Pacers, giving special attention to 7-foot-4 Rik Smits, the second pick overall in the 1988 draft. “HE WILL NEED experience and practice, but everybody needs that,” Walton said of Smits. “But in my opinion, there’s no limit to what he can do. If he can continue to improve, he can do very well. The world’s out there for him. He can take it over.” Twice a day, Walton works with the Pacers at the Institute for Fitness and Sport on techniques, footwork and fundamentals. After the sessions, they look at film. Walton, the NBA MVP in 1978, has a pretty good idea of what a center can or can’t do, and he’s confident that Smits can become a valuable asset. “HE’S A TREMENDOUS talent and a fine young man who has, what I think, a great career ahead of him,” said Walton, who viewed film of Smits and consulted with other coaches and players about him before arriving here.

“He will continue to improve in all aspects of his game. I think the hope of myself and the Pacers is he can improve in the shortest period of time in the most direct route.” Pacer assistant coach Bob Hill takes notes for Smits during the workouts so the repetition of drills can continue after Walton leaves. ■ “I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Smits, who was a 10-year-old living in his native Holland when Walton led Portland to an NBA title in 1977. “THIS IS EVENTUALLY going to help a lot, but there are so many things and I’ve got to keep reminding myself to do those things. It will definitely help.” The experience should help Walton as well. “Basketball is my true love in life,” Walton said. “I’ve always wanted to be involved in basketball, and since I’ve been unable to play the last five years, I’ve been looking for different things to get involved with it. “But because of my continuing health problems with my ankle and leg, I haven’t been able to do that. Now with my ankle fused seven months ago, I’m able to get back into the game, and this is one of the things I want to continue to do.”
