People in the news Vandals strike at Lee’s movie NEW YORK (AP) Vandalism to a prop in filmmaker Spike Lee’s latest movie was more likely the work of neighborhood youths than racially motivated violence, a shop owner says. James Longo, a white florist, on Friday blamed broken windows to his shop and van on youngsters hanging out in the neighborhood. Longo rented a vacant store to Lee that will appear as a candy store in Lee’s latest movie,“Jungle Fever,” about an interracial romance between a black man and a white woman from the Brooklyn neighborhood of BensonhursL Police classified the incidents as bias crimes. “Special attention is being given to the store and to the daily filming sites,” said police spokeswoman Sgt. Tina Mohrmann. After the vandalism, Longo received an anonymous phone call from someone who warned: “This is what happens when you rent to niggers,” police said. Filming continued and was on schedule, said Anna Southall, the publicist for Lee’s production company, 40 Acres And A Mule. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny is suing Gov. Bob Martinez for using his song “Last Train Home” in a campaign commercial. Metheny doesn’t consider the first-term Republican governor “the sort of politician to whom I would lend my music for any amount of money,” Metheny’s publicist said in a statement. Martinez’s campaign manager, J.M. “Mac” Stipanovich, said the song was used accidentally and had been replaced. The lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Miami, accuses Martinez and producers of the commercial of copyright infringement and invasion of privacy. Metheny said he will donate any money he is awarded to the Censorship Is UnAmerican Campaign, a Los Angeles-based group. • MALINDI, Kenya (AP) Edoardo Agnelli, son of Fiat tycoon Giovani Agnelli and heir to one of Italy’s largest fortunes, pleaded innocent to charges of heroin possession. Agnelli and two Kenyans made their pleas Friday and a trial was set for Nov. 21. They were free on bail but Agnelli’s passport was held by the court.

Trekkie arrested for theft of props

LOS ANGELES (AP) Some of Capt. Kirk’s clothes, a Klingon mask or two and other “Star Trek” props have been recovered, but somewhere in the cosmos is more booty stolen from a Hollywood studio, police said. “Star Trek” fan Kevin Buehler, 25, pleaded innocent to one count of receiving stolen property when he was arraigned this week. Det. John Winchester of the police department’s Hollywood division said an ihformani led authorities to Buehler, who was arrested Sept. 13 as he allegedly attempted to sell wardrobe items from the syndicated television series “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” About 25 stolen items were found at Buehler’s

Dear Abby

Sunbather’s day at beach turns into four days in bed

DEAR ABBY: A couple of weeks ago I was at the beach on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I spent most of the time in the water and sunning myself. I didn’t have any sunscreen because I ran out and neglected to buy more. (It’s also quite expensive.) Well, I learned the hard way that the sun is much stronger between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. than the rest of the day, and also that the gradual loss of our ozone layer causes the sun to do more damage to the skin than ever before! I burned my back so badly that I had to lie on my stomach for 4 1/2 days because the pain from sitting down, leaning back in a chair and bending my knees to walk was too excruciating! It’s been almost two weeks, and I’ve already peeled three layers of skin in most places and am still having trouble walking, because the veins in cne leg have begun to clot up from lying dormant for so many days. I’m glad I have health insurance to pay for the ultrasound that had to be done, not to mention the doctor visits and prescriptions. Unfortunately, I missed celebrating my wedding anniversary, because I couldn’t move. Abby, please urge your readers to learn from my misery. FRIED IN MINNESOTA

WASHINGTON (AP) Lee Atwater bantered politics with President Bush in his first trip to the White House since being diagnosed as having an inoperable brain tumor. Atwater, in a wheelchair, waved at photographers from the rear seat of his limousine as he was driven onto the White House grounds for breakfast Friday. The chairman of the Republican National Committee had a leisurely breakfast with Bush and a spirited discussion with the president and White House officials on political races, said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Leslie Goodman. It was Atwater’s first trip to the White House since shortly after he collapsed during a speech last March. Ms. Goodman said that although “the overall prognosis has not changed” and Atwater’s condition is still very serious, the 39-year-old chairman seems to have bounced back recently. • WASHINGTON (AP) Syndicated columnist Jack Anderson says his luck finally ran out on the streets of Washington when he was the victim of an afternoon assault by a pipe-wielding robber. “I’ve prowled the streets of Washington in the dark of night for many years,” he said Friday. “I admit I’ve often felt a twinge of nervousness, but this is the first time that anything like this has happened. ” Anderson, who has written about politics for the past 43 years, said he was robbed outside his office Thursday about eight blocks north of the White House. “I had just passed a man on the street who spoke to me, when the next thing I knew I felt this sharp pain in the back of my neck,” Anderson said. The assailant took a small amount of cash and escaped. Anderson, not seriously injured, said he walked a short distance back to his office.

Reseda home and locations in Van Nuys and Hollywood, Winchester said Thursday. But other items are still missing, he said. In all, more than $150,000 of “Star Trek” items were lifted from Paramount Studios over the past two years, he said. The 75 missing items come from the original “Star Trek” television series and five motion pictures based on it as well as the current series “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Buehler was sentenced in 1987 to eight months in state prison after being convicted of breaking into the studios where “Star Trek” was filmed, court records show.

DEAR FRIED: I’m sorry about your mishap but I’m publishing your letter to warn others: Readers, exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the leading contributing factors to two kinds of skin cancer and most of it is attributable to tanning. Dermatologists recommend the following measures: Minimize exposure to ultraviolet rays. The sun’s effects are at a peak between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. If outdoor activities cannot be avoided during these times, wear a hat and protective clothing. These precautions should be especially heeded by fair-skinned people, because they are at a high risk for skin

cancer. Be aware that reflective surfaces such as sand, snow, ice and concrete can reflect from 5 percent to 50 percent of the sun’s rays. If you are considering using a tanning salon, discuss it with a dermatologist first. Use a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF whenever the skin is to be exposed to the sun. Fair-skinned people should apply sunscreens more liberally. Infants and small children also need to be protected from the sun if they are to be outdoors for prolonged periods. Remember that people who sunbathe are mortgaging their future looks for a temporary “glow.” Even those lucky enough to escape skin cancer will still suffer premature aging of the skin from ultraviolet exposure wrinkles and leathery thickening of the skin. It’s time for a new standard of beauty the natural complexion to be instituted, because only those who refrain from tanning their hides will save their skins!
