WESTHEAD: From Loyola to NBA

No mo’ Moe; Westhead to coach Denver DENVER (AP) Doug Moe, the guy who somehow just didn’t fit the mold as an NBA head coach, is out after a decade of seasons with the Denver Nuggets, and Loyola Marymount’s Paul Westhead is in, the team is expected to announce. Moe, alternately laughing and choking back tears, announced his firing at a news conference on Thursday morning. ON THURSDAY NIGHT, Westhead flew to Denver and was to attend a news conference today at Nuggets’ headquarters. Although no team official would confirm Westhead’s selection, Nuggets co-owner Bob Wussler admitted that a decision may already have been made. “It’s my understanding we have already decided on our coach,” Wussler told reporters. Broadcast sources in Los Angeles and Denver reported Westhead was the choice. MOE WHOSE BAGGY sweatsuits and boisterous, frequently profane courtside manner aggravated NBA bigshots, fellow coaches, players and fans conceded his style never seemed to fit with the new ownership of the Nuggets. “When a new ownership group comes in, I think they need their own identity,” he said. “Personally, I don’t think this is a bad move for them. We weren’t able to work things out and the organization decided to go another way. “I WISH THEM the best of luck. I have no regrets whatsoever, no animosity. It was a very, very friendly parting. But after 10 years, it’s tough to leave the people you’re close to. “Taking everything into consideration, I think it’s best it turned out this way.” At one point when the tears started to take over, Moe said: “Hey gang ... a toast. The hard part is leaving the people. I’ve already gone through an emotional morning with the...” While Moe struggled for words, his wife, Jane, poured champagne and joked with reporters about the remainder of her husband’s contract. “DO WE PICK up the check, or do you mail it?” she asked Nuggets officials.
