Ways to deter car thieves

Dear Friends: There has been a rash of stolen cars recently and so we thought we would share the following guidelines that may just keep your car from becoming a statistic. Install a locking gas cap or a fuel switch which cuts off the fuel supply when the car is parked. You can use a “crook lock" that locks the steering column to the brake pedal. Install an alarm system that turns on the lights, car horn or siren if someone is tampering with the car. When parking, always turn the wheels sharply to the curb, which makes towing the car difficult. Park your car as close to the building as possible with the front end toward the street. It is easier to spot someone tampering with the car. At night, always try to park in a well-lighted area. Always lock your car, even if you are only going to be gone a short time. If you are parking where there is an attendant, do not tell him when you expect to be back. If you must leave a key, leave only the ignition key. Never leave house or apartment keys and never have your name and address tag on your key ring. If they are lost, it could lead a thief directly to your home. Heloise DRYING RACK Dear Heloise: When my electric box fan wore out, I saved the plastic grate from the front. I use it as a drying rack for sweaters and other garments that need to dry flat. Dear Abby

Eager wife wants to solo as hubby flies home

DEAR AB BY: I need some advice. My husband is stationed in England with the U.S. Air Force, and he’s coming home for a 30-day leave next month. My problem is that his parents want to go to the airport to meet him, and I would prefer they didn’t because I’d like to have him all to myself when he arrives. Besides, he’s coming in at 11 p.m. on a weeknight, and his parents have to go to work the next morning. Anyway, I don’t know how to tell them that I would rather meet my husband alone. He hasn’t been home in 13 months, but I flew to England to see him last November so I’ve seen him more recently than his parents have. But he is my husband and we’ve been married only four years. My parents are not going to the airport. I’m not sure how to handle this. What would you do, Abby? UNDECIDED DEAR UNDECIDED: I would say absolutely nothing to his parents to discourage their meeting him at the airport. As you know, a man can have more than one wife in a lifetime, but he will never have more than one set of parents. So put your nose back in joint, grow up, and don’t make an issue out of who or how many people meet your

husband at the airport.

DEAR ABBY: It’s been almost nine months since my husband and I got married, and here’s my problem. Although my husband is busy with school and a job, we agreed to share the duty of sending out thankyou notes for our wedding gifts. I went through all our gifts and made a list. I also addressed all the envelopes. Then I did my half of the notes, and my husband was supposed to do the other half which he told me he had done. Well, yesterday I found most of his half of the thank-you notes in a box in our spare room. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

What should 1 do now? I know I still need to send them out, but how do I apologize for getting them out so late? Everyone who hasn’t received a thank-you note yet must think we are absolutely awful! Please help. EMBARRASSED DEAR EMBARRASSED: Judging from your husband’s track record, in order to avoid further delay, you’d better write the balance of the thank-you notes yourself. Although your husband doesn’t deserve to be protected, resist the temptation to “explain” why your acknowledgment is so late. How disappointing for you to learn that your husband is not only irresponsible, he’s less than honest. * * * “How to Write Letters for All Occasions” provides sample letters of congratulations, thank-yous, condolences, resumes and business letters even how to write a love letter. It also includes how to properly address the clergy, government officials, dignitaries, widows and others. To order, send a long, business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Letter Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris. 111. 61054.
