Cards’ Coleman runs wild and stops Cubs

By R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer ST. LOUIS (AP) Fours were wild for Vince Coleman and the St. Louis Cardinals. Coleman went 4-for-4 Tuesday night with a home run, triple, four runs scored and four stolen bases and capped his dream night by stealing home in the eighth inning as the SL Louis Cardinals ended the Chicago Cubs’ eight-game winning streak with a 9-4 victory. “I JUST DO the best I can and let you guys clap for me,” Coleman said to reporters after the last-place Cardinals won for the fifth time in six games and stopped the Cubs’ longest streak since 1978. “I’ve gone 5-for-5 before, but I’ve never done anything like this. “This is the best game of my career.” Reliever Scott Terry (1-5) worked four scoreless innings for his first victory since Aug. 11, Willie McGee had two hits to extend his hitting streak to a major-league high 17 games and Pedro Guerrero and Tom Pagnozzi drove in two runs apiece for the Cardinals. BUT COLEMAN STOLE the spotlight. He walked, stole second and scored in the first, hit his fifth home run of the season and second in three days in the second, singled and stole a base in the fourth, then tripled and scored in the sixth. In the eighth he singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored easily on an 0-2 pitch in the dirt from Mike Bielecki as catcher Joe Girardi scooped the ball out too late on a close play at the plate. “It’s very seldom that you get the opportunity to steal home,” said Coleman, who has done it twice.

“(Bielecki) has that forkball and he gave me that extra step and I took advantage of it” SEVERAL CUBS PLAYERS were not amused. “Coleman showed us up,” Ryne Sandberg said. “Stealing with a four-run lead tells me you don’t think your bullpen’s any good.” Terry gave up two hits in four innings of relief for Joe Magrane, who gave up seven hits and four runs in two innings. Terry, who was supposed to be the Cardinals’ righthanded bullpen stopper before encountering shoulder woes, lowered his eamed-run average 78 points to 6.51. “I’ve taken a lot of abuse this year,” Terry said. “I can get people out when I’m healthy.” TOM NIEDENFUER worked two innings and Frank DiPino finished up for the Cardinals. McGee had an RBI single in the Cardinals’ four-first off Steve Wilson (3-6) and went 2-for-5. He is 30-for-70 (.429) with 11 RBIs during the streak, raising his overall average to .332. White Sox Peterson wins first

CHICAGO (AP) choice he would have written the script a bit differently, but Adam Peterson will take his first majorleague win any way he can get it. “I would have liked to have had a better outing, but this is still a great feeling,” Peterson said Tuesday night after gaining his first victory with an 8-3 decision over Cleveland in career start No. 13 (eight this season). “IT SURE TOOK long enough, though,” added Peterson, clutching an unopened bottle of champagne. “I hope I don’t have to wait as long for the next one.” Ivan Calderon and Dan Pasqua each drove in a pair of runs in a rain-delayed game. The 24-year-old Peterson (1-2) gave up two unearned runs on four hits and four walks in five-plus innings. Ryan pitches for No. 300

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Nolan Ryan can reserve a ticket for Cooperstown sometime in the 1990 s if he can defeat baseball’s worst team. Ryan has a bad back, a bad Achilles tendon and a bad bullpen, but what better opponent for milestone victory 300 tonight than the New York Yankees? Ryan has been maligned by some critics during his 23-year career because of his less-than-dominating 299-267 record. But baseball’s strikeout king can end any arguments with 300 victories to go with his 5,000 strikeouts and six no-hitters. Ryan said he won’t be thinking Hall of Fame if he wins. “When I walk out of this game that (the Hall of Fame) will be the farthest thing from

my mind,” he said. “Maybe it will cross my mind when the time to elect people gets closer, I don’t know.” The Yankees could be the perfect foils for Ryan to get his 300th on the first try. Grover Alexander, Warren Spahn, Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver were successful on their first shot at 300. Ryan, hoping to become 300 winner No. 20, hasn’t lost to the Yankees in 13 years. He is 3-0 against them as a member of the Texas Rangers. The Yankees have the worst record in baseball and are the lowest-scoring team in the American League. Ryan has already beaten them twice this season.

lead in the sixth, loading the bases with none out on two walks and a single. Pall came on to relieve, but a 71-minute rain delay began just as he had completed his warmup pitches. When play resumed, Pall struck out Chris James for the first out. Brook Jacoby followed with a bouncer to third that Robin Ventura fielded, but threw over catcher Carlton Fisk’s head for an error, allowing two runs to score. But Pall escaped further damage by getting Keith Hernandez to hit into a forceout at home and retiring Felix Fermin on groundout. “You don’t want to make excuses,” McNamara said. “But we did have some momentum going (before the delay). Who’s to say?” “PALL DID A good job,” White Sox manager Jeff Torborg said. “We spent all that time in the rain delay wondering how we were going to get out of the inning with the bases loaded and no one out.” The White Sox then raked relievers Rudy Seanez and Steve Olin for five runs in the sixth to break the game open. “THAT INNING WAS big,” said Torborg.

Rose’s new home more like a camp MARION, Ifi. (AP) Pete Rose is heading for the lockup, but the place where baseball’s all-time leading hitter will be doing time is more like a spring training camp than a slammer. The Marion Prison Camp which adjoins the nation’s toughest maximum-security federal penitentiary houses about 200 inmates in an air-conditioned, art-deco style dormitory surrounded by manicured lawns and flower beds. THERE IS NO fence and inmates have free roam of the grounds, including a softball diamond, weight room and tennis, handball, basketball and boccie ball courts. The inmates can’t wait to greet their famous fellow prisoner. “Everyone here wants to meet him and talk to him,” said Mark Bailey, an East Chicago, Ind., native finishing the last two weeks of a seven-month sentence. “WE ARE BETTING on whether he will be in the rec department,” Bailey said. ROSE WAS SENTENCED to the Federal Prison Camp at Marion after his conviction on two counts of filing false income tax returns that did not report $350,000 from gambling and baseball card shows.
