It may not be sheer delight to be an animal at the Putnam County Fair, but on the other hand, it has to be “shear” delight to be out from under a wooly coat on a typical July day. Jeff Stanley, a 10-year 4-H’er from Coatesville, does the honors here, readying his entry for the sheep competition during the 1990 Putnam County Fair. The 4-H Sheep Show, showmanship and sheep trimming contests were all held Wednesday. The fair continues through Saturday. (Ban-ner-Graphic photo by Gary Goodman).

Soybean problems noted by some Hoosier farmers

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) Indiana farmers have been having some problems with their soybean crops, including sudden wilting and a slight stunting and yellowing of the soybean plants, according to Purdue University’s weekly crop report Soybean condition was rated 8 percent excellent, 68 percent good, 22 percent fair and 2 percent poor in the report released Monday by Purdue. THE 76 PERCENT good or better rating compares with 79 percent last week and 80 percent last year. Forty-three percent of the soybeans are in bloom. Last year, 51 percent of the soybeans were blooming; the five-year average is 67 percent. Eight percent of the soybeans were setting pods. This is the same as last year, but behind the five-year average of 16 percent. The average height of emerged soybeans was 18 inches, the same as last year, but behind the fiveyear average of 22 inches. THE REPORT ALSO said wet weather delayed the wheat harvest in the north. Ninety-three percent of the winter wheat acreage had been combined, virtually the same as last year but four days behind the five-year average of 99 percent. Baling of straw was nearing completion in many areas of the state. Com condition was rated 12 percent excellent, 67 percent good, 18 percent fair and 3 percent poor. Watermelons said making comeback

WASHINGTON (AP) Watermelons are getting better, easier to handle and are making a comeback with consumers, the Agriculture Department says. But that’s hard to pin down because the USDA which readily publishes estimates of many other crops hasn’t taken a national reading of annual watermelon production for almost a decade.

For many years, says the department’s Economic Research Service, the U.S. watermelon industry showed “a gradual but persistent decline” as production slipped from 31.1 million hundredweight in 1960 to 26.1 million in 1981. THAT WAS THE last year the department officially estimated watermelon production.

Although production declined, rising prices boosted the farm value of watermelons to $159.3 million in 1981, several times what is was in 1960. The report in the August issue of Farmline magazine said U.S. watermelon consumption on a per capita basis dropped to a record low of 10.6 pounds by the 1980 s from 17.2 pounds in 1960.
