‘Recalcitrant Democrats’ should be voted out of Congress: Mrs. Quayle
COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) Republicans must work harder than ever to remove “recalcitrant Democrats” from Congress and give President Bush the support he needs to advance his programs, Marilyn Quayle says. “He needs a Republican-control-led Congress,” the wife of Vice President Dan Quayle said during a GOP fund-raiser here Thursday. “We had it when Dan Quayle was in the Senate for four years. You know what happened in those four years? Ronald Reagan was able to make a difference.” MRS. QUAYLE SAID voters in the vice president’s home state can make a difference by narrowing the gap between Democrats and Republicans in Indiana’s congressional delegation. She noted that Indiana currently has seven Democrats and three Republicans. “Can you stand that? I can’t,”

she said, adding that Bush and Quayle “can’t stand it much longer.” Asked about Bush’s recent change of position on his “no new taxes” campaign pledge, Mrs. Quayle pointed to a budget stalemate she blamed on a Democratic Congress that refused to work with the president. Bush, being a statesman, went to the table with alternatives, she said. “THE SHOE IS NOW on the Democrats’ foot to show that they really want to cut spending before the president will commit himself to anything else,” she said. “I think

he showed incredible responsible leadership in the face of a Congress that did not want to lead and did not want to govern.” Mrs. Quayle urged supporters to return Dan Coats to her husband’s former seat in the U.S. Senate and to help Republican Mike Pence defeat incumbent U.S. Rep. Phil Sharp, D-Ind. SHE ALSO SAID it is vital to help Republicans bolster their edge in the Indiana House of Representatives, where they hold a 51-49 advantage, and to help establish a more solid majority in the Senate, where the GOP holds just a 26-24
Has Oratory Aged Out? When was the last time you heard a truly great speech (excluding sermons) that thrilled you and inspired you to a decision or a cause? Or even a speech with phrases you will never forget? I don’t recall any since John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” And, Gen. Douglas McArthur’s 1951 farewell before the Congress: “Old soldiers never die they just fade away.” What’s happened in our lifetime? Why don’t we have Lincolns writing “four score and seven years” gems on the train to Gettysburg? Why don’t we have William Jennings Bryans touring the country’s platforms to speak about the “cross of gold?” Is it, perhaps, that speech writers (I was one of them) are deciding what a political or business spokesman ought to say and what words and phrases he/she can handle? Is the creative team approach actually blocking the speaker’s own creativity? Or is it because global television has brought us so many oratorical scenes and so many personal interviews that we no longer need speeches for entertainment or to judge the policies and drives of a leader? For whatever reason, there’s been a change and many of these older ears miss the “big” speeches we were brought up on. Or, to be more accurate, those that our parents were brought up on and asked us to listen for. My father urged me to take
majority. Because the governor’s office will continue to be filled by a Democrat next year, when the state faces political reapportionment, it is particularly important that Republicans rale the Legislature, she said. “It will affect our state Legislature into the 21st century,” she said. ELECTING A Legislature that Bush and Quayle can work with and that “understands the importance of reapportionment” is essential, she said. Mrs. Quayle told the crowd to rally behind House Republican Speaker Paul S. Mannweiler of Indianapolis and to give him “a bigger mandate than he already has to lead the House.” That can be done, she said, by electing a GOP majority.

“elocution” in school and, once I found out that it had nothing to do with apes or electricity and particularly after I looked at the pictures of hand gestures and demonstrative poses in his old elocution text I rejected his counsel. But, I liked to listen to political speeches on the radio and colorful commentary by sports announcers and I often got a kick out of not only what was said, but how it was said. I don’t know too many places to find that sort of emotional stimulation today. There’s a documentary-looking black and white magazine called “Vital Speeches” which contains addresses by university professors, philosophers, and business leaders and in which every corporate public relations man is dying to get the latest talk by his chief executive officer. But, good as these speeches are, there are few jewels of original oratory therein and, what’s more, you can’t hear the voices of the speakers (which, in the case of some speaking voices, is probably a blessing.) The lecture bureaus have some great personalities to book into your retirement club meetings (if you can ever get the program budget high enough) but some of these people are more notable for what they have done and what they think than how they talk. I guess the best way to fill your “speech” vacuum if you have one is to rent a Shakespeare play occasionally and listen to some Lawrence Olivier soliloquies.

Mrs. Dole woos GOP, stumps for party in Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Women have made some headway in politics ami other male-dominated jobs, but they still have a long way to go, Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole says. “A woman can have all the credentials and a portfolio that is sterling and still not move out of middle management,” Mrs. Dole said Thursday at a meeting of Republican women in downtown Indianapolis. MRS. DOLE, THE first woman named to a Bush cabinet with her appointment to the Labor Department in 1988, was the star attraction at a meeting of the State Republican Committee. The theme of the reception, which about 150 people attended at SSO a ticket, was “Indiana Women in Leadership.” “We’re finding our seat at the

policy table,” she said in a more optimistic vein during her 20minute speech before addressing a SSOO-per-couple dinner. Mrs. Dole spent most of the time during the UA-hour reception stumping for her party’s candidates for the November elections in Indiana. NEARLY ALL OF Indiana’s top Republican politicians, including candidate for state auditor Ann DeVore and State Treasurer Marjorie O’Laughlin, were mentioned for praise by the labor secretary. “I know it’s going to be a resounding victory for your team here this November,” she said. “You’ve got an all-star team here (Indiana University basketball coach) Bobby Knight would be proud to claim.” Mrs. Dole shook hands and stopped for pictures.
