It’s a changing of the guard this year at Harris Hall as Edith Fry (right) turns over the reins to Marilyn Grove for the 1990

Marilyn Grove takes over Harris Hall superintendent’s job

After 15 years Edith Fry of Roachdale is handing over the reins of the Harris Hall superintendent’s job at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. Edith and her entire family have devoted much time and energy to the Putnam County Fair and especially to the exhibits in Harris Hall. Marilyn Grove, Cloverdale, has agreed to assume the role of superintendent.

‘Wash Day News Wash Day Blues 9 is Ladies Day theme

Members of the Community Service Extension Homemakers Club, assisted by the Readi-Mixers Club, are planning a full day of interesting and entertaining activities for Wednesday’s traditional Ladies Day program. “Wash Day News Wash Day Blues” is the 1990 theme. LADIES DAY IS open to all Putnam County residents, and their guests. It will begin with a 9:30 social time, followed by a welcome and recognition of local and fair dignitaries. Ladies Day will include the usual children’s style show (for those too young for 4-H), presentation of Harris Hall awards, as well as some fun and group participation. Purdue clothing specialist, Jean Goodrich, will share the latest information related to laundry issues and be available for questions. LADIES DAY IS always a highlight of fair week in Harris Hall.

“While we have great confidence in Marilyn’s ability to do the job,” Putnam County Extension Home Economist Jackie Baumann notes, “it is indeed comforting to know that Edith will be near at hand and willing to answer questions and offer advice.” Marilyn is the wife of Carl Grove. They have one son, Dale, still at home.

Canner gauge testing at fair Now is the time to check pressure canners to make sure they are in safe working order before canning season. Extension Home Economist Jackie Baumann will test canner gauges at Harris Hall on Tuesday evening of the fair. Persons who have a gauge they would like tested are invited to bring their canner lids to Harris Hall anytime Tuesday evening, July 24.

Two additions this year include the annual Extension Homemakers Fashion Show which has returned to the fair after being held in April for the past few years and three new ceiling fans which should help make things a little more comfortable for the usual capacity crowd.
