People in the news Madonna opts for changes NEW YORK (AP) places with someone, living or dead, who would it be? Marilyn Monroe? Nah. “She’d probably have an exercise video,” the sultry singer-actress said. John F. Kennedy Jr.? Nope. But she’d like to be stranded with him if they were the only two people left on the planet. Forget iL You’ll never guess. Try Malcolm X. Actually, Madonna first chose Frida Kahlo to trade places with, but remembered the painter, who died in 1954, spent much of her life in pain after being crippled in a streetcar accident. So the assassinated black Muslim leader was her next choice. Madonna answered these and other questions submitted by readers of the teen magazine YM. Her answers are in the August issue. Other gems: The best present she ever received was “a handful of sweaty diamonds and emeralds.” She didn’t say from whom. If she had only two days to live she’d spend them “eating potato chips, watching ‘The Little Rascals.’” And if Madonna could change herself in any way, what would she change? “Just my hairdresser,” she says. Madonna’s “Blond Ambition” tour arrived in Italy to a less-than-sellout crowd after weeks of protests against her by Roman Catholic organizations. And she canceled a second planned performance in Rome because of low ticket sales and a threatened general strike by labor unions. The show has angered the church and pro-family groups that object to the lingerie-clad Madonna using a crucifix and other Christian symbols during her sexually suggestive performance. Madonna, an Italian-American, tried to win over the crowd by donning the No. 15 jersey of Italian soccer star Roberto Baggio and by occasionally speaking Italian during the show. Scalpers sold tickets al cost or less. Police estimate there were 30,000 people at Flaminio stadium, which has a capacity of 32,000. “The controversy has gravely damaged the take,” said David Zard, Madonna’s promoter in Italy. “My blood boils when I am misunderstood and judged unfairly for my convictions,” Madonna said before the concert. LONDON (AP) The Rolling Stones canceled a concert in Wales Wednesday night because lead guitarist Keith Richards has an infected finger. “The decision to cancel was apparently only made at midnight when Keith consulted doctors. His septic finger was too bad for him to play,” Stones’ spokesman Neil Friedman said. The guitarist reportedly accidentally cut himself on a knife. Promoter Harvey Goldsmith canceled the concert after doctors advised Richards he risked permanent (iamage if he played. It was hoped Richards would be better in time for Friday’s concert at Wembley Stadium in London, Friedman said. • PERTH, Australia (AP) Former tennis great Margaret Court says Martina Navratilova is a poor role model for young players because she is a lesbian. Court, who won 25 Grand Slam events, said Wednesday in newspaper and radio interviews that Navratilova’s homosexuality is a bad example. “She is a great player, but I’d like to see somebody at the top to whom the younger players can look up to,” said Court, 47, a born-again Christian who lives in Perth. “It is very sad for children to be exposed to iL” Peter Johnson, a spokesman for Navratilova, said she had no comment. Navratilova won her first Wimbledon singles title in 1978 and a record ninth when she defeated Zina Garrison on Saturday.

SEWICKLEY, Pa. (AP) Melody Augustin wound up wanting what she didn’t get when she bought pop rock performer Sinead O’Connor’s new compact disc, “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.” Mrs. Augustin, 42, of the Pittsburgh suburb, bought the disc at a Camelot Music store. When she got home, she fed it into her CD player while preparing to feed dinner to her kids, five-year-old twins Matt and Mark and nine-year-old John. “THEY CAME RUNNING in the kitchen and told me, ‘Rad, mom. This is tremendous,”’ Mrs. Augustin said. “I said, ‘That’s great. I’m glad you like Sinead O’Connor.’ They said, ‘We didn’t know Sinead O’Connor was in ‘Teen-age Mutant Ninja Turtles.’ ”

NEW YORK (AP) The intriguing scar on the chin of movie star Harrison Ford came from a mundane mishap. Years ago Ford smashed his car into a pole as he reached for the seat belt while driving to his job in a Santa Ana, Calif, department store. “I hit the steering wheel, I think,” Ford, who will be 49 Friday, said in an interview in the current issue of Vanity Fair. He said he crawled from the wreck and stood bleeding from his chin. Other motorists “would just creep around me at 5 miles an hour and keep on going.” Someone finally stopped and took him to a hospital, where he received “not a very good job,” he said. In a love scene with Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl,” the Ford character first says the scar came from knife fight, then says he fainted while piercing his earlobe and banged his chin on the toilet. • WHITLEY BAY, England (AP) Olympic ice dancer Jayne Torvill said Wednesday she’s engaged to American sound engineer Phil Christensen, who is touring with pop star Phil Collins. The 32-year-old skater said she met 35-year-old Christensen, a Chicagoan, when he worked on the Torvill and Dean ice show tour of the United States last year. But she said their romance didn’t begin until January when he asked her for a date at a hamburger restaurant. Three months later, he gave her a diamond engagement ring. “I’m very, very happy,” she told reporters, adding that work commitments keep them from setting a wedding date. Torvill and skating partner Christopher Dean won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics. The engagement ended years of speculation over Torvill’s relationship with Dean, who told reporters he was overjoyed at her engagement. “We are very close platonic friends hopefully now people will believe that,” Dean said. • PHILADELPHIA (AP) Pearl Bailey is feeling well after surgery for replacement of an arthritic left knee, her surgeon says. The 72-year-old singer and actress received a metal and plastic joint Wednesday at Pennsylvania Hospital in her native Philadelphia. Miss Bailey will remain in the hospital about two weeks and undergo therapy and exercises for up to two months at home in Arizona, said Dr. Richard Rothman. • NEW YORK (AP) Woody Allen has agreed to show “Crimes and Misdemeanors” at a film festival in South Africa sponsored by the African National Congress and other anti-apartheid groups. The comic actor and director said Wednesday he supports a cultural boycott of South Africa until the country’s system of racial segregation is dismantled. But he agreed to show the movie in August at the Weekly Mail Film Festival in Johannesburg. “This is done with ANC agreement in the hopes of promoting a unitary culture and also to show sympathy for those in South Africa who oppose a prevailing, unacceptable, racial policy,” he said in a statement.
The box and disc were marked Sinead O’Connor, but contained the movie soundtrack from “Teen-age Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Mrs. Augustin said she jumped from track to track, trying to find O’Connor’s hit, “Nothing Compares 2 U.” All she got was “Turtle Power.” “Heavy, heavy rap,” she said, laughing. She planned to return the disc despite her children’s delight THE ASSISTANT MANAGER of the music store, Jennifer Baker, said such mix-ups are not unusual. A second woman who bought a CD Tuesday thinking it would be O’Connor also wound up with another recording, she said.
