People in the news NASCAR style right for Cruise CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Tom Cruise’s sudden love affair with stock car racing, which grew from filming “Days Of Thunder,” led to an urge he couldn’t resist a turn on the Darlington Raceway oval. “I hadn’t been able to run any laps very fast because we had cameras mounted on the doors of my car,” Cruise said. “When they took the cameras off, I decided to try a lap to see if all the stories I’d heard about Darlington being so tough were true. I got up to about 130 miles an hour. “Sure enough, I got sucked into the wall in Turn 1.” Told that experience put him in company with the Winston Cup Series’ very best, Cruise laughed knowingly. However, the actor turned serious in discussing the new movie, which opened nationally Wednesday. “I want it to communicate to the public all about the people in the sport so they can get a feel for them,” said Cruise, who portrays a fictional competitor, Cole Trickle. “In my opinion, the drivers and the crews are heroes, the type of people that built this country. “I hope when a person sees the movie they’ll care about the NASCAR people and feel they’re on their journey with them. “I found I had a real affinity for the people and for the competition the action and color,” said Cruise, who has driven competitively in Sports Car Club of America road-course racing. He praised writer Robert Towne’s story and was happy with the in-car, on-track sequences in “Days of Thunder,” which had scenes shot at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Bristol (Tenn.) Raceway, Phoenix Raceway and Volusia County (Ha.) Speedway, as well as Darlington. “I watch every race I can live on TV. When we were filming ‘Rain Man,’ I was over at Dustin Hoffman’s house and we were working on how some things should go in the movie. It was during February, and the Daytona 500 was on TV. I talked him into watching, and now he’s a fan, too. “I feel we accomplished our goals in making ‘Days Of Thunder.’ I hope that people who see the movie enjoy it and become stock car racing fans as well.” • BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) Writer Pat Conroy does a mean Carolina shag, and he’s ready to “die in peace” after teaching the step to Barbra Streisand. Streisand, who directs and stars in a film based on Conroy’s novel “The Prince of Tides,” saw the dance in the book and asked the writer to explain. Conroy, 45, went one better. He showed her. “I have taught Barbra Streisand to shag and now I can die in peace,” he said from his Atlanta home. Parts of the movie are being shot in Beaufort. Streisand, 48, plays a New York psychiatrist who treats a psychotic poet in the chilling family saga set in New York and Sullivans Island.

NEW YORK (AP) Bidding for the slip actress Kathleen Turner wears in Broadway’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” escalated quickly after an auctioneer informed potential buyers she was wearing it just a few blocks away. “She’s sweating in it right now,” Diddi Lynn Worsole Worsole said at the auction for Easter Seals Tuesday. “Maybe there will be a little perfume on it.” Bidding had started at SSOO and went up in increments of SIOO. Real estate broker Henry Setaro came in with the top bid of $1,200. “It’s the closest I will ever get to Kathleen Turner,” said Setaro. “I hope they don’t wash it before I get it.” Setaro’s wife sat next to him during the bidding. Sandy Setaro said she approved of the purchase because the money was for a good cause. Turner plays Maggie in a low-cut, lavender, thighlength, silk slip with lace trim. The slip actually is one of two that were custommade for Turner to wear in the Tennessee Williams play, in accordance with a union regulation that requires two sets of each costume. • OMAHA, Neb. (AP) A radio station will no longer play the music of Grammy winner k.d. lang because the Canadian country star appears in a new ad campaign called “Meat Stinks.” KRVN in Lexington will boycott lang until she renounces the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and her “fanatic anti-meat philosophy,” program director Charlie Brogan said. KRVN, which broadcasts country music, farm and market reports to Nebraska, Kansas and lowa, was formed by farm groups in the late 19405, Brogan said. “This is more than supporting the local economy. It’s part of our mission of ag service,” Brogan said. “Her music has given her a platform.... We decided by not playing her music, we’re not enhancing that platform.” The singer appears in the ad with a cow and says, “If you knew how meat was made, you’d probably lose your lunch. I know That’s why I became a vegetarian. Meat stinks, and not just for animals but for human health and environment.” Dan Mathews, PETA director of special projects, said the TV ads and a print ad campaign will begin this summer. “We were thrilled to have k.d. lang with her cattle country background,” Mathews said. “Animals have no voice and k.d. has such a beautiful voice.”
