Calendar of events Friday Indiana First Lady Susan Bayh will be the guest speaker for the Putnam County Democrats’ annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner, scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, June 15 at the Community Building on the local fairgrounds. First Gobin sermon Sunday for Steele
Members of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church Sunday will greet their new pastor, Rev. Nelson Steele, who will preach. The subject of his first sermon will be “The Names of All Who Serve.” Steele, who answers to the more informal name of Ned, succeeds Jerry Hyde who is retiring after nearly 40 years in the ministry. Jerry and Martha Hyde are moving to their new home in Brown County’s rustic recreation land from where they will continue their ministry in retirement NED AND BERNIE formerly known as Bemadine Steele come to Gobin from Bethel United Methodist Church on West 52nd Street in Indianapolis. Ned was bom in Lydick, a small community near South Bend, in 1945. He was graduated from New Carlisle High School, Indiana Central University and Christian Theological Seminary. He presently is completing work on a Doctor of Ministry degree at the seminary. He served as co-host of a weekly TV program on the Adult Lesson Series beginning in 1982. Currently he is hosting a weekly radio program for United Methodist churches in Indianapolis. HE IS INTERESTED in various athletic pursuits and when interviewed this week, reported he had met a Greencastle softball team leader. Ned said he and members of his family had played on a team in Indianapolis.

Other athletic interests include golf (he modestly admits to 12 or so strokes over par), tennis, coaching Little League baseball, and work camp trips to the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. Besides Bethel Church, the Steeles have served Edgewood and Bellaire U.M. Churches in Indianapolis and Park Place in Jeffersonville. THEY WERE married in 1963 and have three sons, twins Gary and Scott and the younger Brent. Each is now married. Mrs. Steele is employed in the Postal Service in Indianapolis and will continue to commute to work while she maintains her church interests at Gobin.

Area-wide crusade set June 17-22 at Brazil’s Forest Park
BRAZIL An area-wide crusade, “First Aid: A Soul-Win-ning Crusade” sponsored by First Christian Church of Brazil, is scheduled Sunday through Friday, June 17-22 at Forest Park. Except for Sunday, when services start at 6 p.m., events are scheduled 7-8:30 nightly in the pavilion at the Brazil park, located a mile south of U.S. 40 on State Road 59. DOUG FRALEY, pastor of First Christian Church, Brazil, will be the featured speaker. His topics include “The Great Salvation” (Sunday), “Will a Good Man Go to Heaven” (Monday), “Where is God When I Hurt” (Tuesday), “Four People I Want to Go to Hell” (Wednesday), “Why Does God Allow War, Poverty, Abuse?” (Thursday) and “Right Makes Might” (Friday).
