Dear Abby

Son goes to dogs with biting remark to mom

DEAR ABBY: I just moved to Palm •Springs. My son called to say that he and his wife and daughter were coming to visit me for Mother’s Day. I was thrilled. Later, I realized that no dogs were allowed. (I live in a country club, and my front door is adjacent to the 16th green.) I called him back immediately and told him he wouldn’t be able to bring his dog, a huge pit bull. He said, “Well, Mom, I don’t go anywhere without my dog, so I’ll see you when you get a house.” I was so unnerved, I couldn’t think of anything to say, so I hung up! I feel bad about hanging up on him, but enlightened to know where my son’s priorities are and I’m behind his dog. I’m truly crushed, for I had anticipated seeing him and his family. Abby, what are your thoughts about this? HEARTSICK IN CALIFORNIA DEAR HEARTSICK: Don’t feel guilty. Your son showed an appalling lack of sensitivity. He belongs precisely where he put himself in the doghouse! ♦ * * DEAR ABBY: My husband’s parents live less than a mile from us, and they want our children (their only grandchildren) to visit them often. Our children are 2 1/2 and 4 years old. The grandparents are loving and well-meaning people, but they have an unprotected swimming pool in their backyard that worries me. They have assured me and my husband

Travel tips for airlines Dear Readers: When planning your next airline flight for business or pleasure, here are some important tips to remember to make your trip as enjoyable as possible. A good travel agent is the best and easiest way to go, and they usually charge nothing since they make a commission from the airline. Ask friends for recommendations. If you want to do it yourself, contact all airlines that service the city you will be flying into for the lowest fare. Mention any discounts that you may be eligible for, like senior citizen, military or student status. At this time check airline policies: Will they refund a ticket if prices have decreased since you bought yours? When making reservations, try to book direct, non-stop or connecting flights with the same airline. Ask for your seat assignments and boarding passes with the ticket when you buy it. My favorite time-saver when flying is to carry on all baggage, but be sure to check with the airline for limit and weight restrictions only two small pieces, no television sets. If you check baggage, take a few minutes to remove all old baggage-claim tickets. Be sure your name and address are on both the inside and outside of your luggage. Safe traveling. Heloise

that they will watch our children every minute if we leave them in their care, but, Abby, as you know, accidents do happen. I hate to come off looking like a “nervous Nellie,” but I simply cannot bring myself to leave my children with these grandparents. I doubt if they realize that they are slowing down with age, and they’ve forgotten how fast little ones can be. Please tell me I’m not paranoid. My friends (almost all of them) think nothing of dumping their kids with their parents for overnight visits and even weekends. Of course, I can’t sign my name to this, but I’d appreciate an answer in your column. ME IN ARIZONA DEAR ME: You are not paranoid; all parents should have your sense of responsibility. Since you have doubts about your children’s safety while they are in the care of your in-laws at their home, do not send them, take them to visit their grand-

Move over, Mutant Ninja Turtles, snapper puts bite on pizza man

BALCH SPRINGS, Tex. (AP) Where were the crime-fight-ing, pepperoni pizza-munching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when Domino’s delivery man Troy Brewer really needed them? After all, they may have known his alleged hard-shelled attacker. BREWER SAID HE was at a pay phone when he was robbbed by a pair of thieves armed with a snapping turtle. “That sucker was going to bite me,” he said. “They put him right up to my face.” The toothsome turtle didn’t nip the flustered pizza delivery man, but those wielding the turtle got away with his money pouch containing about SSO, he

parents, or invite the grandparents to your home. ♦ * * DEAR ABBY: I am one of three sisters who are all over 40 now. Our mother, nearing 80, had a big box filled with family pictures that all of us girls enjoyed looking at. She said that one day she would divide them so we would each have some. Many were priceless pictures of older family members great-great grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, taken in the old country. When I visited my oldest sister recently, I discovered that she had many of our mother’s pictures! The next time I saw our mother, I asked her if she had given any of her family pictures away. She said she had not, so I think it’s fairly obvious that my sister stole them. My mother doesn’t want to accuse her, nor do I, but how else can we get them back? All of us sisters want those priceless pictures. Can you suggest a way of solving this dilemma? MISSING PICTURES DEAR MISSING: Pictures can be duplicated. Without making any accusations, ask your oldest sister if you may “borrow” the priceless pictures. Then take them to a photographer who will make as many duplicates as you wish from the original. P.S. Don’t rule out the possibility that your mother may have given those pictures to her eldest daughter but did not want to admit it.

said. ‘“DON’T MOVE OR you’re gonna get bit,’” Brewer said robbers told him. Brewer, a college student who works in Balch Springs, filed a police complaint in Dallas because he said Tuesday night’s robbery occurred just inside the city limits. Balch Springs Assistant Police Chief B.W. Smith said it was first robbery at turtle-point he’s ever heard of. “I SUPPOSE IF he said it happened, I guess it did. Personally, I just can’t see somebody holding somebody up with a turtle,” he said. Brewer said he was still shaken a day later “It was a big, huge, ugly turtle.”

What a disappointment! You had a tremendous drive, the perfect chip shot, and a brilliant putt Then your ball stopped at the edge of the cup. The birdie you thought was yours didn't materialize. Of course, it's only a game. It doesn’t really matter. But blighted hopes are not always so trivial. What if something really big passes you by? Suppose you don't get that promotion, your child's scholarship is given to someone else, an important client changes his mind, or the stock market wipes out your investment? Where do you turn? Where do you find strength to meet life’s disillusionments? Spiritual values are constant Fortunes may shift and change, but God's House stands firm. The truths and inspiration you find there give meaning, purpose, and stability to your life. Be inspired this week. Scriptures Selected by The American Bible Society
