Tennis loses champion of individuality LONDON (AP) Ted Tinling, whose career spanned all of lhe great stars of the sport of tennis, is dead. Tinling, who suffered from a respiratory complaint, died Wednesday at a Cambridge hospital. He was 79. HE REVOLUTIONIZED WOMEN’S tennis wear and was one of the sport’s foremost historians. He also was a champion of individuality, and was quick to denounce efforts to make tennis players conform. Earlier this year, when some reporters applauded 14-. year-old Jennifer Capriati after she ended her first news conference in Boca Raton, Fla., the press was admonished by one of the reporters. Tinling quickly enjoined the discussion. “The day you start giving priority to bogus ethics over human reactions, you become a loser,” Tinling said. “Human reactions are priceless; rules should never, ever supercede to stifle emotions. “TENNIS IS A very human game facing a great danger that it will be strangulated in a cat’s cradle of unneccesary and inhumane rules.” Bom in Eastbourne, England, on June 23, 1910, Tinling’s involvement in tennis dates to 1925 when he umpired matches for the legendary French star, Suzanne Lenglen, on the French Riveria. In 1927, he was hired by Wimbledon to escort players on and off Centre Court and Court One. He was banned from Wimbledon in 1949 when American Gertrude “Gussy” Moran shocked the crowd when she appeared on court wearing a Tinling-designed outfit of a short skirt and lace-trimmed panties. LATER, HE DESIGNED Chris Evert’s wedding dress for her marraige to John Lloyd in 1979. For years he acted as the liaison between players and officials at Wimbledon and was frequently used as an interpeter at the French Open, where his title was social facilitator to the president of the French Open. He also was Chef de Protocol for the International Tennis Federation, director of international liaison for Virginia Slims Tennis, and consultant to the Women’s Tennis Association, the Kraft General Foods World Tour, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Tennis Australia. COMPLETELY BALD AND sporting an earring in his left car, the tall Tinling was an imposing figure in his colorful clothes. In 1970, the first year of the women’s professional tour, Tinling was asked to serve as the name designer for the newly formed Virginia Slims Series. During his tenure, he designed more than 1,000 individual outfits for players on the tour. One of his most famous creations was the sequined and rhinestone embroidered tennis dress worn by Billie Jean King in her “Battle of the Sexes” match with Bobby Riggs in 1973. “TED WAS SUCH an integral part of the tennis community, it’s hard to imagine it without him,” said eight-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova. . In 1983, his autobiography, “Tinling, Sixty Years in Tennis,” was published.
