Taking care with pesticides

By TIM YINGST Extension Agent-Ag Applicators need to take extra precautions when mixing and applying pesticides to eliminate potential body exposure or pesticide spills. All protective clothing described on the label should be used and an awareness of the risk to the environment should be considered. PESTICIDES ARE normally absorbed by soil particles in the upper layers of soil prior to natural degradation. However, spills or improper pesticide disposal can overload the soil system and allow pesticides to reach to greater depths, even to the ground water in some cases. Dumping excess pesticides or simply washing out sprayers in the same place every year can create point sources of contamination. If this is done near a well, the risk of well water contamination is in-

creased. While the Indiana State laws are not yet in place, it is best to use watertight dikes and pads where bulk pesticides are stored and large quantities of pesticides are mixed. Growers also need to be more careful about mixing herbicides and rinsing sprayers. Disposal of excess spray solutions and pesticide rinsate at a central mixing site can cause a problem of contamination

Nominating petitions, which must be signed by the nominee and two eligible farmer voters, and other information can be obtained at the FmHA County Office at Route 1, Box 25, Greencastle, Weaver said. Rain, flooding delaying field work for Hoosiers

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) Heavy rainfall brought fieldworic to a virtual standstill last week, halting planting and tilling activities in most areas of Indiana, the weekly crop report said. Monday’s report from Purdue University said moderate to heavy showers and thundershowers caused considerable ponding of water and lowland flooding across the state. The problem was most prevalent in the state’s southern counties, where some replanting was likely

to both the soil and groundwater, and may require expensive cleanup if and when state and federal laws are in place. A SIMPLE YET sensible solution to excess spray solution and/or rinsate is to apply it on registered sites (crop fields). This is a lowcost and safe alternative as long as the labeled pesticide rates are not exceeded. Backsiphoning of pesticides into wells is always a potential problem. Backsiphoning occurs when the end of the water hose is allowed to extend into the spray solution while filling the sprayer. If the hydrant is shut off or the pump stops while the hose is still in the tank, the spray solution can backsiphon into the well. Positioning the hose end above the water line and removing the hose before shutting off the hydrant can prevent this problem. Likewise, adding an inexpensive antibacksiphon check valve will

New milk subsidies in 1990 farm bill

WASHINGTON (AP) A revision of government support for dairy farmers is being included in the 1990 farm bill. The House Agriculture Committee completed work Tuesday on the key portions of its dairy section of the bill that will set government policy on agriculture for the next five years. Earlier in the day, the Senate Agriculture Committee approved legislation that makes seafood inspection part of the farm bill for the first time. UNDER THE HOUSE committee’s dairy plan, the current government price of $lO.lO per hundred pounds of milk would be maintained, as long surpluses are between 3.5 billion and 5 billion pounds. If surpluses fall below 3.5 billion pounds, the government would pay $10.55 per hundredweight. However, if dairy farmers produce between 5.01 billion and 7 billion pounds more than the market will bear, the government will pay only $9.85 to $9.60 for a hundred pounds of milk product. IF MORE THAN 7 billion pounds of surpluses result in any

prevent well contamination. Using a water reservoir such as a nurse tank to mix and rinse in the field will also guarantee that a well will not be contaminated by backsiphoning of pesticides. THIS ARTICLE began with a caution stated on personal safety. It is recommended that protective clothing, boots, gloves, eye covering, and respirators be used when handling, mixing, and applying pesticides. Read the label for the signal word of each pesticide. Danger Poison with skull and crossbone refers to oral, dermal or inhalation toxicity and the label describes the appropriate protective clothing. Danger: Corrosive - usually refers to irreversible eye damage. This signal word and those products carrying the warning signal word require or recommend the use of goggles or face shields when handling and applying pesticides.

one year of the five-year farm bill, the Agriculture Department would be authorized to establish an inventory management program. Rep. Charles Stenholm, D-Texas, chairman of the dairy subcommittee said system does not include assessments or a rigid quota system. The program differs from a plan approved earlier by Stenholm’s subcommittee. That proposal included producer assessments and set up a two-tiered price support system that Stenholm said was found unacceptable by too many people in Congress and the dairy industry. “THIS IS AN EFFORT to al low everyone to have an opportunity to have their opinion heard,” said Stenholm, who presented the new plan with Rep. Steve Gunderson, of Wisconsin, the ranking Republican on the subcommittee. “This is a dairy support program to provide stability to producers,” said Gunderson. The government traditionally has supported dairy farmers by setting a price it will pay for storable dairy products, like cheese, butter and non-fat dry milk, that aren’t bought by processors in the open market.
