South Putnam, Greencastle county champs

Blaydes wins 800, 1600, 3200 By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Steve Blaydes did the improbable while leading the South Putnam Eagles to the expected Tuesday afternoon in the Putnam Courtty Track Meet. Bladyes won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter races while leading South Putnam an unprecedented sixth consecutive Putnam County Meet championship at Greencastle High School Stadium. WITH BLAYDES WINNING three events, Jeremy Sadler and Bill Gardner two each and Bill Furby setting the only meet record, South racked up 82 V 4 points. Led by Nathan Lewis’ stadium record in the pole vault and Joe Tucker’s career best 400 dash, Greencastle finished second with 67 points. Jeremiah Lavoine won the 110meter high hurdles and finished second in the 300-low hurdles by a dive at the finish line while leading Cloverdale to 67 points and a third place finish. And Rick McPherson paced North Putnam’s 27-point showing by winning the high jump at 6-feet-1. SOUTH PROVED TOO deep for its rivals. Led by Blaydes and Sadler, the Eagles took first and second places in the shot put, discus, 1600 and 3200. Blaydes and Brian Pershing finished one-two in the 1600 and 3200, despite early leads by Cloverdale’s Brian McCammon in the 1600 and Greencastle’s Paul Harris in the 3200. Sadler and Mike Harris finished one-two in the discus and Sadler and Dan McKee took first and second in the shot put. “We needed to have our top people perform well and they have,” coach Waye Schuetter said, who believed the meet could be much tighter than the seeding showed. ‘The seeds are bases on the top performances and several of our people have not performed at that level since we were down south at the Mitchell Invitational. Tonight they are getting back to that form.” GARDNER HAD FUN winning the 100 and 200 dashes in tight races with Greencastle rival Randy Pettit. “Well, we might have this fun again in the conference meet (Friday at Owen Valley),” Pettit said to Gardner. If not for Tucker’s career-best 52.1 second time in the 400, Gardner might have been a triple winner. “I didn’t care about any other race but that 400,” Tucker said. “Last year I got second or third behind (Wes) Trout and I wanted to prove I could still do it.” FURBY WASN’T ABLE to score all the points South expected after pulling a back muscle in the long jump, but he gave everything he had in a thrilling record 300-low hurdle performance. Clearing the final hurdle nearly dead even with Cloverdale’s Lavoine, Furby dived across the finish line to win in 39.5 seconds, breaking the old record of 40.3 seconds set by South’s Bruce Bridgewater in 1986. Lavoine’s 39.7 second place performance stands as a Cloverdale school record. Greencastle’s Lewis was something of a surprise with a winning vault of 12 feet, 3 inches. Due to two injuries, it was only the sophomore’s second meet of the season. Lewis and Cloverdale’s Chris Lewis, a freshman, both cleared 12 feet, setting the stage for the stadium record. 1990 PUTNAM COUNTY TRACK AND FIELD MEET At Greencastle H.S. BOYS RESULTS Team Scores 1. SUSAN STARK Discus, 100, 800 county champion

May 9,1990 THE BANNERGRAPHIC!

Stark takes three firsts to lead way By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Halfway through the girls Putunam County Track Meet Tuesday, Cloverdale coach John Nees said, “It’s over. I worked and work this thing every way,” the coach said. And in a meet filled with upsets, Nees’ prediction was stood up. WHEN JENNIFER FAJT, Amy Loveless, Heather Harmless and Tara Regnier won the 400meter relay in 53.6 seconds, Greencastle had a lead that would only grow, as Susan Stark won event after event then joined Lurissa Liffick, Susan Duell and Loveless for a record 1600-meter relay run that put an exclaimation point on the Putnam County Meet championship. Led by Stark’s victories in the discus, 100-meter dash and 800run, Loveless’ firsts in the long jump and 400, Greencastle scored 90 points. Cloverdale scored 66 points with Monica Koosman winning the 1600- and 3200-meter runs and Germaine Winnick and Michelle Lewis pulling off surprising firsts. Winnick won the 100-low hurdles and Lewis the shot put. CLOVERDALE’S NEES counted on was North Putnam’s top seeds in the shot put, discus, high jump and long jump to win. That didn’t happen, and Greencastle picked up first and some second place points. North finished third, as expected, but scored a disappointing 33 points. Chris Martin’s stadium record tying 300-meter low hurdle performance was team’s only first place in the meet. Martin matched her 51.4-second run from last year. Tina Husk capped South Putnam’s 27-point, fourth place performance by winning the high jump, as the Greencastle High School Stadium lights were being shut off. Husk cleared 4-feet-10, matching her season’s best. FIRST-YEAR TRACK coach Gleni. Hile could not have asked more of Greencastle’s Tiger Cubs. “We have had a great day. We performed the way we should have all year,” Hile said. Stark was as good as she has been, but still a surprise triple winner. The sophomore’s stadium record run of 2:29.6 in the 800 in the only head-to-head competition with Cloverdale’s Monica Koosman was not suprising. And Starks’ 100 was not so surprising. But Greencastle picked up big points on Cloverdale with one-two finishes in the discus and 100. Kara Thompson finished second in the discus and Tara Regnier took second in the 100 dash. GREENCASTLE GOT A big meet from Loveless. She not only ran on both winning relay teams, but also won the long jump and 400. Cloverdale got the expected two firsts from Koosman. The junior won the 1600 with a stadium record-tying 5:39.0 run and overcame Joy Tesmer’s early lead to win the 3200 in 13:10.6. Lewis and Winnick scored Cloverdale’s surprise firsts. Only a freshman, Lewis edges North’s Phipps, the defending champ, by one-quarter of an inch t-1!4 to 30-feet-1. Winnick won a photo-finish in the 100-low hurdles race with Greencastle’s Marie Arden. 1990 PUTNAM COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLGIRLS TRACK AND FIELD MEET At Greencastle H.S. GIRLS RESULTS Team scores 1.
