Dear Abby

Twice-married man faces double jeopardy

DEAR ABBY: This is a very long story, but I’ll try to keep it short. I’ve been married for 20 years to a man I have been very happy with. We have a family we are proud of. Last June, my husband went to Mexico to see his mother. (We live just over the border.) Well, he ran into his childhood girlfriend. She was expecting a baby from a man who had left her, so she asked my husband if he would marry her. He thought nobody would find out that he was already married because she lived in Mexico, so he agreed to marry her, not knowing he was going to be in hot water later. This girl came to the United States to have her baby (a boy), and she gave the baby my husband’s last name. She is not a citizen of the U.S., but her son is. The baby is not my husband’s. I still love him that’s why I don’t report him to the authorities. Please tell me what to do. DO NOT USE MY NAME DEAR DO NOT: There is nothing you can do, but your husband should be aware that by allowing this woman to name him as the father of her child, legally he is the child’s father, and as such, he is responsible for child support until the child is 18 years old. Your husband is also guilty of bigamy, having married this woman while being married to you. Your husband should see a lawyer. He needs to know exactly what his legal obligations are, and if possible, how he can extricate himself from this mess. ♦ ♦ * DEAR ABBY: Twenty-five years

ago, when my fiance and I announced our intentions to marry, all you-know-what broke loose. Because of background differences, certain family members refused to attend. Their forecast was, “It will never work.” With heavy hearts, weeloped. After 25 years of marriage, we have proven ourselves. Not only did our marriage “work,” it worked beautifully. You guessed it we plan to renew our marriage vows on our 25th anniversary. I will wear a lovely new white wedding gown veil and all and I’ll carry a beautiful bridal bouquet. Our three daughters will stand with their father at the front of the church, and our son will walk me down the aisle. We will have a lovely reception for family and friends, which we will pay for ourselves. Selfish, Abby? In lieu of gifts, we are asking that a contribution be donated to the local children’s hospital. CONNIE IN CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA DEAR CONNIE: Beautiful! Congratulations, and continued

good health and happiness to you and yours.

DEAR ABBY: Speaking of toddlers and babies who scream and carry on, thereby disturbing people in restaurants, how about babies on airplanes? I had looked forward to enjoying a lovely flight to California, but the minute the plane took off, a baby started to scream uqtil that ear-pierc-ing noise nearly blew out my eardrums! I was terribly annoyed, and so was everyone else on that plane—not so much with the baby as with the mother. Mothers who can’t control their children should stay home! FROM CONNECTICUT DEAR FROM CONNECTICUT: Flight attendants, on seeing babies being carried aboard, should advise the mother (or adult traveling with the baby) that the change in cabin pressure on takeoff and landing can cause a child excruciating pain if the eustachian tube (in the ear) is blocked. Therefore, in order to keep the tube open, the baby should be given a bottle or a pacifier to suck on during takeoffs and landings.

“How to Be Popular” is for everyone who feels left out and wants an improved social life. It’s an excellent guide to becoming a better conversationalist and a more attractive person. Observing Earth Day on April 22 reminds us of our partnership with the environment. This partnership teaches us two things. First, the earth contains limited natural resources. And secondly, man cannot ignore his effect on the environment. With this in mind, PSI is pursuing plans that emphasize energy efficiency and conservation. This approach does two things. First, it conserves the earth’s resources while delaying the need for costly additional power plants. And secondly, being energy efficient means less energy used, which translates into lower bills for you. PSI believes energy conservation and protecting the environment go hand in hand. With the acid rain issue, PSI has taken a leadership role in shaping legislation likely to affect us all. To better address future environmental issues, we’re forming a statewide environmental council in order to bring us new insights on the environmental concerns of Hoosiers.

With the annual Spring Clean-Up campaign in full swing in Greencastle, students at Greencastle Middle School pitched in this week to help clean up the school grounds, as well as collected aluminum cans for recycling. Sixth-graders Jackie Thompson (above, left) and helper Emily Gibson take to the middle school grounds with a trash bag in search of litter, while Science Club members Shawn Heeke (foreground at left) and Brian Lanie (with glasses) and Jared Grable add bags of cans to a burgeoning pile as Jimmy Stevens (left) looks on. Other sixthgraders in teacher Ray Dickerson’s science research class who participated in the clean-up effort were Dawn Applegate, Allen Ball, Ben Fisher, Donnie Jellison, Nikki Knauer, Chris McFadden, Shanna Phillips, Eric Rising, Heather Rogers, Patricia Tuttle,. Brandon Vaughan, Jason Wager, Karena Watson, Lance Williamson, Jessie Wood and Jim Zeller. (BannerGraphic photos by Gary Goodman).

Join us in the partnership with the environment. Here's how.
