Connection Checking for heartworm
It’s springtime time to have your dogs checked for heartworm disease. Heartworms are internal parasites whose larvae are transmitted to dogs by mosquitoes. Heartworms can be dangerous to your pet. The adult worms live in or near the dog’s heart Their offspring are released into the dog’s bloodstream, where they may be picked up by mosquitoes and then transmitted to healthy dogs. SIGNS THAT your dog may be infested with heartworms include coughing, lethargy, extreme weight loss and shortness of breath. Eventually, heartworms can kill your dog. Prevention of heartworm disease is relatively easy. Your dog can be given a preventive

Dear Abby
Insensitive chocolate giver takes the cake
DEAR ABBY: Recently a friend I’ve known for years came to spend a weekend with me. She brought me —of all things a homemade chocolate cake! She’s a very creative cook, so I assumed it was low-cal because she knows I am on a weight-manage-ment program and I’m struggling to lose weight. (She’s no slim chicken herself.) I asked her about the ingredients and she said, “Oh, it’s very fattening.” I was shocked. I’m not knocking her manners, just her choice of a gift. Besides, I live alone, and she knows what a struggle I have resisting temptation. She insisted that I cut the cake right away, and we each had a piece. (It was delicious.) Then I cut the remaining cake into small pieces to freeze, with the idea that when I wanted a “treat,” it would be there. Well, the minute she left, I was into the cake, and I ended up throwing most of it away, as I found myself slipping back into my old habits and eating one piece after the other. I probably should have thanked her as soon as I saw the cake and insisted that she take it home with her, but I didn’t. So, why am I writing you this? Because I want you to tell your readers that if they really love somebody, they will not put temptation in his or her way. KICKING MYSELF IN RICHMOND, VA. DEAR KICKING: Right on. Add to the truism, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk”— neither do friends bring chocolate cake to friends who are fighting the battle of the bulge. * * * DEAR ABBY: I am sure you would not have titled a recent column “Indian-giving is OK” if you knew

medication during the mosquito season that falls between early spring and late fall in Indiana. Either daily or monthly tablets are available from your veterinarian. But before giving the preventive medication your dog must be checked to be sure he does not already have heartworm disease. Administering the heartworm medicine to a dog that already has the disease can make him very sick. A simple blood test by your veterinarian will determine whether your dog has the disease. PLEASE HAVE your dog checked for heartworm disease soon. It would be tragic to lose your beloved pet to a disease that could have easily been prevented.

the unfortunate history of this phrase. In colonial times, European settlers and Native Americans had misunderstandings because of different customs and language. Sometimes a settler would think a Native American had given him something, when, in fact, it had only been loaned to him. When the owner asked for the return of the “gift,” it caused resentment. As you know, children sometimes “give away” their possessions, then change their minds. When I was young, we would angrily call a child who did this an “Indian giver.” I didn’t know any better then, but now I am sorry that I helped perpetuate this insulting stereotype. It is tragic that this stereotype should exist about people who generously shared their lands with others and were repaid so cruelly. I hope you will print my letter so that other readers can learn not to make this mistake. MOLLEEN MATSUMURA, BERKELEY, CALIF. DEAR MOLLEEN: Whoa ... hold it! I plead “not guilty” as charged. I do not write the “heads” for my column. The editor of your newspaper deserves all the credit or blame whichever the case may be.

DEAR ABBY: I have been reading your column ever since I was old enough to read a newspaper. My younger brother has just joined Amnesty International, the group that helps to free political prisoners around the world. When he told me he had joined, I told him about a wonderful piece I had read in your column several years ago. I don’t recall who wrote it, but it came about as a result of Hitler’s reign during World War 11. I’m not sure, but I think the last few lines went something like this: “And when they came for me, there was nobody left to speak out.” It brings home the principle that each of us has an obligation to speak out to help others. If you know the piece I’m referring to, please reprint it. It’s well worth seeing again, and I’d like to send it to my brother. ROBIN MAMMEN, LONG BEACH, CALIF. DEAR ROBIN: The wonderful piece you refer to was titled “I Didn’t Speak Up.” If was written by Martin Niemoeller, a German Lutheran pastor who was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp in Dachau in 1938. He was freed by the Allied forces in 1945. And here it is: I DIDN’T SPEAK UP “In Germany, the Nazis first came for the communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak for me.”
