North admits lying to Congress
WASHINGTON (AP) Oliver North says be lied repeatedly to Congress after national security adviser John Poindexter told him to “take care of” inquiries into whether he was secretly assisting the Nicaraguan rebels. But “nobody ever told me to lie to Congress,” North testified Friday at Poindexter’s trial, insisting that he decided on his own to make the false statements after his boss sent him to meet with House Intelligence Committee members on Aug. 6,1986. Norm, the government’s first witness, returns Monday to face questioning about the Iran initiative. Iran-Contra prosecutor Dan Webb led North through his recollections of a conversation with Poindexter, in which North said he didn’t think it would be a “very good idea” to meet with the congressmen. North testified at his own trial last year about the conversation in some detail, but he said Friday he
Cigarette named after Soviet
GENEVA (AP) A Swiss company launched a cigarette named for Mikhail S. Gorbachev on Friday, figuring that a popular Kremlin leader might be just the guy to knock the Marlboro man off his horse. The company plans to invade the U.S. market next with the cigarette, which it calls “Gorbatchow,” enticing smokers with its slogan, “A Taste of Freedom.” THE WORLD HEALTH Organization was less than enthusiastic about the launch of the new braid. The UK agency estimates that nearly 3 million people will die this year from tobaccorelated illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. was unable to remember much of his earlier testimony. UNDER PRODDING by Webb, North said he had “a general recollection” of telling Poindexter that there were things that could not be revealed to the congressmen and that meeting with them would create “vulnerability.” “I didn’t want to be in that predicament,” said North. He recalled that Poindexter told him something like “you can handle it or you can take care of it. I do not remember the specific, preambular language on either side.”
in Geneva on Friday, said the name “Gorbatchow” was formed by mixing spellings of the Soviet president’s name in various languages. The medium-strength cigarette is a blend of 21 types of tobacco some Soviet, some American. STUDER SAID IN an interview that cigarette smokers need “a new image.” “We think people are bored with a tired cowboy on an almost dead horse,” he said, an apparent reference to the advertisements for Marlboro cigarettes, which are popular in the Soviet Union. He said he had not sought permission from Moscow to use the president’s name. STUDER PLANNED to travel io the United States on Saturday in

ASSERTING THAT neither Poindexter nor anyone else had ordered him lo teH falsehoods. North said, “I didn’t walk into the meeting intending to lie.” He said he made false statements when he told the congressmen he wasn’t providing military advice to the Contra rebels, hadn’t been in frequent contact with Contra liaison Robert Owen and hadn’t been in touch with rebel supporter John Singhub in 20 months. “I recall deceiving them about the full measure of my involvement,” North testified.

Surgery goes well for boy, 12, set afire
NEW YORK (AP) A boy who was beaten and set on fire because he refused a neighborhood bully ’s order to take drugs underwent several hours of surgery Friday, hospital officials said. One day after his 12th birthday, David Opont underwent a four-hotr operation to graft a thin layer of skin from his lower legs onto his badly burned arms. DR. CLEON Goodwin, director of the burn center at New York Hospital-Comell Merfical Center, said David did well during the operation but would need several skin-grafting operations; 55 percent of his body was burned. “I would still like to stress he is in a life-threatening situation and will be for the next several months,” Goodwin said at a news conference. The boy’s condition win be evaluated further Saturday, Goodwin said, adtfing that a infection is a major risk. HEAD NURSE Barbara Both said David was “thrilted to pieces that President Reagan” had called to wish him well. The former president, the White House and Mayor David Dinkins were among those who sent cards, gifts, balloons, flowers and messages. "He is a very warm, loving, trusting child,” Ms. Both said. “David is in this big city of ours and is an mnocent child.” The boy steeps a lot she said, adding, “He doesn’t seem to be in a great deal of pain between the medication and his spirit.” DESPITE THE attack, David’s parents have don’t regret coming to the United States, from their native Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 18 months said Guito Lavoite, a cousin who said he spoke for the family. The family spelled their name Aupont in Haiti but changed it lo Opont when they emigrated, said Lavoite. The earlier spelling
the Defense Department announced Friday that it was adding warships, aircraft, radar equipment, dog teams and other military resources in the Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean and along the southern U.S. border. The plan greatly extends the military’s involvement in efforts to stem the flow of drugs into the United States and to help Colombia, Bolivia and other Latin American countries combat their drug cartels on land, sea and in the air.

“Deploying appropriate elements of the armed forces should, over time, help reduce the flow of drags into the country,” Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said in a written statement. CHENEY, WHO DID not attend a news briefing on the program, made clear in his statement that the impetus for wider military involvement in the drag war came from the White House, not the Pentagon.
