could only watch as Greencastle hit the winning free throws in a onepoint loss. Defense was Cherry’s trademark when he came to Cloverdale after coaching two winning teams in Michigan. Seeing the Clovers lacked confidence, he tried to play an uptempo offense before Christmas. It proved counterproductive on the defensive end of the floor. CLOVERDALE CAME back from the Christmas break with a more patient offense that uses the entire half of the court, the ball handling and penetrating ability of point-guard Branneman and inside scoring of Jeff Bell. Before Christmas, the Clovers were giving up 77.6 points per game, 20 more than they were scoring. Since then though, they have allowed 61.1 per outing. “I felt like we had to become a better defensive team,” Cherry said, noting the up-tempo game stretched the Clovers too thin on the court. “THAT WAS MY primary focus coming in was to teach defense. If you do that and if you can play with any kind of consistency on the defensive end, you have an opportunity to win. “We went back to that basic,” Cherry explained. Cloverdale became the first team since Christmas to hold Edgewood below 80 points. The Clovers fell 66-49 in that contest with Jeff Bell netting an impressive 25 points on

Bailey, Bedford favorite

By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Bedford North Lawrence, a state semifinalist in 1987 and 1988, is the sentimental favorite to win the boys’ basketball tournament this year, a tribute to the outstanding career of senior Damon Bailey. The Stars’ No.l star is on the verge of the state career scoring record, and that accomplishment would be an almost-certainty should Bedford reach the Find Four again. A HUGE PLURALITY of sports writers and broadcasters who participated in the annual Associated Press pre-tourney survey believe hope Bailey and Bedford will do just that “All season long I said a oneman team can not do it ... and JDamon Bailey and the Bedford North Lawrence Stars would prove me wrong. I’m convinced he can take the Stars anywhere, even the moon,” said Steve Fields of the Putnam County Banner-Graphic. “A state championship is the only way Damon Bailey can close a legendary career.” ‘ Bedford was picked by 33 of the 165 writers and broadcasters. tempo of offense we’re using right now,” Cherry said. “With us looking to him in the half-court set, it’s made him play with a lot more confidence.” WHILE THE CHANGE helped Bell’s senior season, it turned Branneman’s into another rollercoaster ride. “I’ve told kids this before, the most difficult position on the floor when a new coach comes in is the point guard because nine times out of 10, it’s going to change, sometimes slightly, sometimes a lot,” Cherry said. “So it’s been really hard for Brent. He’s done a nice job trying to handle that and I really feel right now he’s finally getting to a point where he understands what I want out of him.” Branneman averaged 10.6 points per game last year and 8.9 points per game this year. He has gone from scoring a scoring kind of point-guard to a quarterback type of guard. “We do want him to score, but his main responsibility is to run that offense,” Cherry said. IN SOME INSTANCES that has ment running the offense with a teammate that has jumped from eighth grade basketball into a varsity contest. Ryan Ford has played in all 20 varsity games and Ryan Thompson in 10. Reguardless of the record, Cherry has put in his program and has said more than once he plans to stay, that Cloverdale is not a stepping stone.

Technically, Marquette too good for Evansville

By The Associated Press Marquette coach Kevin O’Neill, convinced he’d watched a double feature horror show as his team lost to Wisconsin and St. Louis, posed a simple question before the Warriors came out to play Evansville. “I asked the guys in the lockerroom, ‘Do you want to be known for doing it three years in a row or do you want to come out and play and respond the way you should?”’ THE WARRIORS answered with the latter Monday night, racing to a 15-point halftime lead and then using a 20-0 second-half spurt featuring three technical fouls on Evansville for a 90-65 victory. In other Indiana college games, Drake beat Indiana State 73-64 and Valparaiso defeated Western Illinois 76-63. After Marquette’s first back-to-back losing seasons in more than two decades, the Warriors, now 1312, can clinch a winning season Thursday night against Detroit THEY PLAY BUTLER in the regular-season finale Saturday before heading to Dayton for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference tournament. Tony Smith sparked the 20-0 run Monday night by making eight free throws six straight after a foul

The Eagles’ respect for their floor-leader becomes obvious in the final minutes of a close game. “When the game is on the line, I don’t have to tell the other kids to give Steve the ball, they just do it. We trust ourselves to win or lose by what Steve does.” With the WCC title on the line in the season-finale, the opponent South Putnam drew in the sectional was not as important as the bye. and then two technicals on Evansville coach Jim Crews. Thirty seconds after the technicals on Crews, Evansville’s Chris Mack was called for a foul and another technical. Marquette’s Trevor Powell and Smith made two more free throws apiece and the rout was on. “WELL WHEN YOU say, It’s ridiculous,’ and you get a technical, it kind of amazes me to tell you the truth,” Crews said. “There wasn’t any vulgarity, and when that’s the first time you stood up, that kind of surprises me. And then when you’re out of the coach’s box you get another technical, when a previous game on a dead ball you’re told by the same league officials you can get out of the coaching box. “I think our officials need to communicate a little bit better with what is the rule and tell the coaches what are the rules. “IF THOSE WERE technicals there wouldn’t be a coach who would last a game, any game to be perfectly blunt about it.” Evansville fell to 15-14 and 7-6 in the MCC into fifth place behind Marquette, now 7-5. Right now, the teams would play again in the first round of the MCC tournament.

Scott Shreffler led Evansville, which played without injured leading scorer Dan Godfread, with 17 points. Godfread, who’d been out since Jan. 3 with a broken foot, had returned with a 17-point effort Saturday night but his foot was too sore to play Monday. IN DES MOINES, Paul Weakley scored a career-high 20 points to lift Drake to its Missouri Valley Conference basketball victory. The Bulldogs (5-9 in the Valley and 13-17 overall) ended their regular season with the victory, handing Indiana State its 38th straight loss in a conference road game. The Sycamores, who are last in the league, fell to 2-12 and 8-19. Drake shot off to a 10-4 lead with 16:58 to go in the first half when Sam Powell made a slam dunk off a pass from Rodney Chamble. The Sycamores never threatened after that, allowing Drake to build a 40-29 lead by the half mainly on the shooting of Weakley, who was seven of eight from the field. TRAVIS INMAN LED all scorers with 22 points for Indiana State, while Dewayne Brown added 21 points and 7 rebounds. Mike Jones scored 23 points as host Valparaiso beat Western Illinois in the Association of MidContinent Universities to break its--13-game losing streak. Jones had six as the Crusaders scored the game’s first 10 points. But Valparaiso (4-22, 1-10) found itself trailing 30-28 after a rebound basket by Ron Ateman with 3:42. left in the first half. Valparaiso then scored the final six points of the period on a 16-footer by Jones, two free throws by Jones and a basket by Curtis Stevens. JERRY COLEMAN HAD eight of his 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Valparaiso built a 52-40 lead with 11:26 left. Western Illinois (14-12, 5-6) never got closer than eight again as it lost its seventh consecutive game. Ateman was high for Western Illinois with 22 points.
