The 62-year-old conservative, who as defense minister masterminded Israel’s 1982 Lebanon invasion, is Shamir’s chief rival in the right-wing Likud bloc. He has repeatedly argued that Shamir’s plan, which calls for Palestinian elections and negotiations on a limited autonomy in the occupied lands, could bring the PLO into the peace process.
