Tigers win game within game

By BILL WAGNER DePauw University Sports Information Director CRAWFORDSVILLE A look through the history of the DePauwWabash basketball rivalry would make one believe that Wednesday’s hardwood clash was just another close battle. But a closer look at the ICAC contest would indicate that two different games took place and, when all was totaled, the Tigers prevailed with a 65-60 win. THE “FIRST GAME” saw the Tigers fall behind 11-7 in the first 5:30, before scoring nine straight points, capped by a Troy Greenlee three-pointer at the 12:34 mark. Wabash’s Andy Davison scored on a breakaway, but the Tigers countered with a pair of free throws by Moose Hecko and a three-point play on a drive by Brett Crist to lake a 21-13 lead with 10:49 left in the half. The Little Giants closed to 25-19 on a Ryan Grove basket with just

Cougars, Tiger Cubs advance

North wins first ever in tournament By AMY-MAE MILLER Banner-Graphic Sports Writer DOVER —“The monkey’s gone,” North Putnam girls basketball coach Doug Rose said after the Cougars rallied to defeat Western Boone’s Stars 52-48 for their first ever IHSAA state tournament victory. “The monkey’s off our backs. That’s the hard one. It took 15 years,” Rose said after the opening game of the Western Boone-IHSAA Sectional contest Wednesday night WITH THAT FIRST sectional victory, North Putnam improved its overall record to 12-7 and moved into Thursday’s (today’s) 7:30 p.m. semifinal contest against 10-9 Southmont, a 57-55 winner over North Montgomery Wednesday night. North Putnam defeated South 49-39 in the third game of the regular-season. North Putnam got off to a slow start. In the first period of play, the Cougars were down 8-4 with 2:19 left in the quarter. South at North big WCC game

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor If South Putnam and North Putnam are going to make a run for the West Central Conference championship this could be the biggest weekend of their seasons and it will start with a game against each other. South Putnam goes into Friday night’s game at North Putnam tied for second with Edgewood behind 6-0 Monrovia. North Putnam enters the double-conference weekend with a 2-2 record. South at North This will be the second of what could become a three-game series before the season ends. North defeated South 80-75 in the Putnam County Classic championship game, and they could meet sometime between Feb. 28 and March 3 in the Greencastie-IHSAA Sectional. NORTH AND SOUTH are teams of contrasting styles and each does something the other must be concerned about. North’s Cougars are at their best in a running, fulf-court game. South’s

over seven minutes left. Hecko nailed a pair of charity tosses and Crist hit one of two, before the Tigers bomb squad opened fire. Three-pointers by Brad Brownell and Greenlee on consecutive possessions, followed by a Todd Scifferlein bucket, gave DePauw its biggest lead of the game, 36-21, with 1:44 left in the half. JOE WENDT SCORED for the Little Giants to finish the half which was controlled entirely by the Tigers. “We really played tough, defensively, and built a lead in a difficult place to play,” coach Royce Waltman said of his team’s first half play. The Tigers opened the second half with something that was noticeably absent in the first half — inside scoring. A pair of buckets by Hecko and a layup by Dave Ferrell helped the Tigers hold onto a 47-34 lead eight minutes into the second half. IT WAS FROM that point on

South Putnam’s Regina Walton goes for the loose ball as Greencastle’s Laura Lebetter pulls her hand back trying to keep from fouling in Wednesday night action in the Clover-

Eagles like a patient, but not slow, defensive oriented game. “Our success this year has been stopping people’s half-court offense and keeping people’s shooting percentage down,” South coach Kieth Puckett said. “The thing with North Putnam is they don’t need an offense. They run it down the floor. Our concern is their transition offense is so good, they’ll score before we get our defense set.” IN THE COUNTY Classic title game, North had four players in double figures. Center Daniel Johnson scored 23 points, forward Chad Wehrman 18, guard Max Pipes 17 and Brock Barnhart 14. “Their strength is their fastbreak offense all all five of their kids can score. You can’t one or two,” Puckett said. North coach Jim Brothers, on the other hand, must worry about getting his team into the running game and stopping South’s outside-inside attack. “South does play very good defense and we’ve got to make sure we play good man-to-man defense and get out on (Steve) Blaydes and

that one could feel the complexion of the game change. A Rich Calacci layup and free throw followed by baskets from Scott Graves and Rod Scott brought the Little Giants to within six at 47-41 with 11 minutes left. DePauw seemed to regain some sort of control when Greenlee responded with a three-pointer seconds later. The Tigers even maintained a 60-51 lead when Crist calmly dropped in a trey with 3:45 left. That, however, would be the Tigers’ last field goal of the evening. Davison nailed a pair of free throws and Derek Schneider hit four to make it 60-57 with two minutes left. NEITHER TEAM could score on its next possession, but Ferrell was fouled by Schneider with 55 seconds left The sophomore missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Little Giants an opporContinued on B 6

(Jay) Mutterspaugh,” Brothers said. “ Blaydes is really a fine point guard and if Mutterspaugh gets on a roll he can be trouble. “And (Damon) Slaton concerned on the inside.” MUTTERSPAUGH scored a career-high 29 points against the Cougars in the County Classic and forward Damon Slaton netted 14. Blaydes scored only four points in that contest, but averages 11.8 per game. There are three big differences between this contest and the County Classic, the first being they have two months of basketball under their belts. The second difference is Jeremy Sadler, the Eagles are used to playing without him now. Sadler went down with a tom anterior cruciate in the first game of the County Classic and has not played since. The third diiterence is me court. They played on a neutral court in the tournament. North Putnam is right at home this time. Greencastle now faces Mooresville By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE The only two teams in the Cloverdale-IH-SAA Girls Basketball Sectional with winning records advanced to the semifinals with opening night victories, assuring the tourney a new champion for the first time in two years. Mooresville ousted two-time defending champion Monrovia SO--38 in Wednesday night’s sectional opener, then Greencastle overcame South Putnam’s deliberate offense and packed defense for a 43-22 victory in game two. TOURNAMENT PLAY continues at Cloverdale Thursday (today) with 7-11 Cloverdale taking on winless Eminence in the 6 p.m. game, followed by 10-8 Greencastle against 12-7 Mooresville. Northview Friday, they are at TriWest Tuesday. Cloverdale is common ground for both teams. The Tiger Cubs slipped by the Clovers 58-57 Tuesday, while the Knights pounded them 71-51 last weekend. Greencastle has shown a more consistent interest in taking the ball inside recently. The Tiger Cubs have been getting the ball inside to six-foot Kevin Barnett and 6-foot-6 Matt Amis. To date it means three-point bomber Chris Covert is shooting less. But it could also mean Covert will be open, as against Cascade, when opponents pack in the defense. At Owen Valley These two teams need one another. They also need a victory. Cloverdale came within a free throw bounce of a win Tuesday night after some excellent offensive execution and a season-high 26 points from Jeff Bell. Owen Valley has lost nine straight and a big chuck of its firepower. Center Doug Pyle was rule academicly ineligible last week.
