South Putnam put future in place this season
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor The season was just over the midway point when South Putnam basketball coach Allan Rains started looking for shooting camps for the Eagles to attend during the summer. Shooting was the one thing Rains did not think would be that much of a problem when the season opened. “I think as coaches that sometimes we take for granted shooting is going to be there,” Rains said. “I TRY TO relate it to a classroom. We spend a lot of time on parts of speech and things like that when kids have trouble spelling or writing. It’s just something we take for granted.” That one element, combined with a lack of varsity experience, is the reason South Putnam takes a 116 record into Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. IHSAA Sectional game against Greencastle at Cloverdale. Rains knew long before the first practice that Tina Husk would be his only returning varsity starter. So

Tina Husk is South Putnam's only senior basketball player this year. The forward-center led the Eagles in scoring this season at 8.4 points points per game and was one of the top rebounders. Husk scored a season-high 13 points against West Vigo and netted a dozen in several other contests.

AND THE EAGLES did improve upon nearly all the areas. “We set 10 goals from last year and we met nine of them,” Rains said. “Our record does not show it, but we met nine of our 10 goals. When the shooting goes bad it makes everything else look bad.” If a team scored points for getting open shots, the Eagles might be undefeated. For instance, in the 72-35 loss to Greencastle, South got shot after shot inside 15 feet, many in the lane, but they would not fall. “We’re like a 30-31-percent shooting team from the field and we average 31 points a game and it’s hard to compete against teams and expect to win,” Rains said. “WE’RE GETTING 50-60 shots a game, but we were only hitting sometimes 9-and-10 shots and we were getting excellent shots, but we couldn’t hit.” Husk led the Eagles in scoring at 8.3 points per game and in rebounding with approximately six per contest. The 5-7 center scored in double figures six times, netting a season-high 13 points against West Vigo and scoring an even dozen against Owen Valley, Monrovia and Tri-West. Between South’s lack of scoring and the lack of size, opposing teams racked up over 1,000 points this season. The Eagles gave up 62.7 points per game. THAT ALSO LED to a change in defenses. About the time South play Greencastle, Dec. 7, 1989, Rains switched to the Eagles to a

man-to-man defense. “We took our lumps, but I think it’s going to pay off in learning to play man-to-man,” the coach said. Rains hopes the school of hard knock will pay off in the future. Along with the veteran Husk, he started junior Karen Nelson, sophomore Tara Goodpaster, junior Suzanne Beck and freshman Missy Vickous. Goodpaster averaged 6.1

Also, Vickous, although only a freshman, was given the pointguard role with the live-and-leam philosophy. “She’s given us some stability back there,” Rains said. ALL OF THESE things have

been put in place for the future. But when is the future? Wednesday’s sectional game with Greencastle? Next year? Rains pulled no punches before the draw came out. “We need a very, very good draw,” he said. Eminence is the only team South Putnam beat from the Cloverdale sectional field. The Eagles won 5749, the only time they scored more

Vickous led South’s scoring against Greencastle during the regular season, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the floor in a 10-point effort.
