People in the news Ava Gardner’s death mourned LOS ANGELES (AP) The entertainment industry mourned the death of actress Ava Gardner, the sexy Hollywood glamour queen of the ’4os and ’sos whose personal life sometimes matched her femme fatale screen roles. “My heart is broken with the loss of my first love,” said her first husband, Mickey Rooney, after stepping off a plane in Orlando, Fla. He was 21 when he married the 19-year-old Miss Gardner in January 1942. The star of 60 motion pictures, including “The Barefoot Contessa” and “Night of the Iguana,” died of pneumonia Thursday in England at her home in Kensington, West London. She was 67. Miss Gardner and Rooney divorced in late 1943. She was also married to bandleader Artie Shaw for a year and to Frank Sinatra for 5 /i years. Her last marriage ended in 1957. “Ava was a great lady, and her loss is very painful,” said Sinatra, whose remarks were relayed by his publicist. Gregory Peck, her co-star in “On the Beach” in 1959, praised Miss Gardner’s acting. “She was much better than she thought she was,” Peck said. “She had no vanity about her talent, but she will stay in the minds of millions.... She did nothing that lowered her standards as an actress or as a lady.” A floral display from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce was placed over Miss Gardner’s sidewalk star along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Miss Gardner’s reputation as a sex goddess was launched in the 1946 film “The Killers,” which also catapulted the fledgling career of co-star Burt Lancaster. “She was a wonderful lady, wonderful lady,” Lancaster, 77, said from Los Angeles. “I did my first picture with her. She was a very simple lady. She used to come down to the beach with us and cook and play with the kids.” • LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Martha Raye was in fair condition while undergoing therapy at CedarsSinai Medical Center following treatment for a stroke she suffered earlier this month, a spokesman said. Miss Raye, 74, was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 5 after she suffered the stroke at her home, fell, and broke four ribs, hospital spokesman Ron Wise said Thursday. “She is expected to be released sometime next week,” he said. “She has shown considerable improvement.” ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) to watch the American Music Awards, Bill Pettaway set the timer on his videocassette recorder and dropped off to sleep. His slumber didn’t last long. Toward the end of this week’s three-hour program, a caller woke him up to say that “Girl, You Know It’s True,” which he co-wrote for Milli Vanilli, had been named the pop-rock single of 1989. A few hours later, after congratulatory calls from all over the world, the 29-year-old was back at his “day job,” pumping gas at a service station. “The excitement’s over for me,” he said Wednesday, less than 48 hours after winning the award. Pettaway co-wrote “Girl, You Know It’s True” with Ky Adeyemo. Milli Vanilli’s version has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide.

PAUL NEWMAN Senior citizen now
WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) Paul Newman turned 65 Friday, and workers at his food company, Newman’s Own, plan to make sure he doesn’t ignore it They were busy making a huge popcorn cake to present to the actor. “I think he’s just going to avoid his birthday,” said author A.E. Hotchner, executive vice president of Newman’s Own and a good friend of Newman’s. The recipe for the cake comes straight from Newman’s Own Gourmet Popcorn Recipe Book, a book put out by Newman’s food company. The company also has recipes for salad dressing, lemonade and spaghetti sauce. • ATLANTA (AP) Kim Basinger welcomes you to visit Braselton, the town she bought with the help of “Batman.” “It’s a perfect place for filming,” the actress said after signing papers Wednesday night in Atlanta to close the transaction that gives her most of Braselton, a northeastern Georgoia town of 500 people. . Miss Basinger, whose movies include the blockbuster “Batman,” said she hopes to use some of the 1,728 acres for which she paid S2O million to build a “major film studio” and a “major recording studio,” perhaps the biggest on the East Coast and maybe even the biggest in the world. But she also has promised to keep a flavor of the old-time South. “I have always dreamed that I would play a major role in preserving a small rural Georgia town similar to the town where my grandparents lived,” said Miss Basinger, who attended high school in nearby Athens. “This is God’s little 1,800 acres,” she said with a chuckle. It was that kind of thinking that encouraged the Braselton family which has owned most of the town for more than 110 years —to Sell. “She stated that she would do well for the community and she would do her best to make everybody love her,” said H.B. Braselton, co-manager of the family business. Miss Basinger now owns the community’s downtown, its water and sewer systems, a bank, a post office, a manufacturing plant and various retail properties. LONDON (AP) The U.S. theater is superficial, says Arthur Miller, who’s in London for rehearsals of his play “The Price,’ which opens next month. Contrasting unsubsidized theater in the United States with the state-aided British theater, Miller said American theater often has degenerated into a search for titillating ways to fill unsubsidized and expensive seats. During a break at the Young Vic theater, the 74-year-old playwright told reporters that standards in British theater could fall if subsidies were reduced.
