Bird, Boston beat Friday jinx, Pacers

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics ended their Friday night flops, but the Indiana Pacers went down fighting. Larry Bird scored 29 points, and the Celtics survived last-minute 3point field goals by Chuck Person and Reggie Miller for a 109-104 victory, their first at home on a Friday night after five consecutive losses. “There are trends that, unfortunately, show up,” Boston coach Jimmy Rodgers said. “We lost to some pretty good teams” on Friday nights, including Denver, Philadelphia, San Antonio and the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. BOSTON BEAT A pretty good team Friday night because, “we had good ball movement, good passes and took good shots,” Kevin McHale said. The victory was Boston’s eighth in 11 games. Indiana has lost eight of its last 11, including seven straight road losses. Bird added 12 rebounds and nine assists and made 12 of 23 shots. Indiana coach Dick Versace scoffed at talk earlier in the season that Bird was having trouble fitting in after missing the last 76 games of last season following heel surgery. “I’ve said many times all this consternation about Larry is folly,” Versace said. “Given time, everything’s going to work out fine.”

TWO FREE THROWS by Dennis Johnson gave Boston a 10397 lead with 59 seconds remaining. Person, who had 20 points, then hit his second 3-pointer of the game to cut the gap to 103-100 with 46 seconds to go. Two foul shots by Reggie Lewis with 30 seconds left put Boston up by five. But Miller, who had 15 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter, sank his fourth 3-pointer and sliced the lead to 105-103 with 24 seconds to play. “We can always make it interesting,” Versace said. “We have terrific 3-point shooters.” “We knew exactly what they were going to do (shoot 3-pointers) and they still did it,” Rodgers said. “That makes our win that much more impressive.” Johnson hit two more foul shots with 21 seconds left, then fouled Miller with 12 seconds remaining. Miller made the first shot and deliberately missed the second. Bird got his 12th rebound and lobbed a long pass to Johnson, who fed Lewis for the game-clinching layup with 4.7 seconds to go. TRAILING 66-60, Boston went on a 14-point run starting with McHale’s two free throws with 6:09 left in the third period. McHale’s layup with 4:18 remaining in the quarter gave the Celtics their first lead, 68-66. They never trailed after that.
