Cubs hold off Clovers’ charge

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE Greencastle can win a girls basketball game without Laura Ledbetter, but having her on the court makes it a whole lot easier. While Ledbetter sat on the bench with four fouls, Greencastle withstood Cloverdale’s third quarter charge and led by two going into the final period. AND WITH LEDBETTER scoring 12 of her game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter Greencastle pulled away for a 61-54 West Centrad Conference victory Thursday night. The 5-11 sophomore, exceeded her 24.3 points per game scoring average despite sitting out 10 minutes in foul trouble. Ledbetter sat out the final 4:17 of the first half with three fouls and was whistled for a her fourth with 5:53 left in the third quarter. “We had a couple of opportunities to draw a charge and didn’t get the job done,” Cloverdale coach Greg Hammond said. WITH TEAMMATES getting her the ball inside, plus a few offensive rebounds, Ledbetter, the state’s 13th leading scorer, hit 13-of-20 shots from the floor and 6-of--8 free throws en route to her fourth 30-point performance of the season. She also pulled down a team leading 13 rebounds and

Monrovia favored over Clovers

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Undefeated Monrovia has been established as a solid favorite to repeat as West Central Conference Wrestling Tournament champion over undefeated Cloverdale Saturday at Edgewood High School. Led by the state’s No. 1 ranked 135-pounder, Toby Turner with a 19-0 record, the Bulldogs have undefeated, top seeds at 152 pounds, 160 pounds and 171 pounds. THE 10-TEAM tournament gets under way at 9:30 a.m. with action on three mats. All-day admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students, or $2.50 for the consolation and final rounds. The WCC Tournament has been expanded this year. The three mats are necessary into the consolation and championship rounds because wrestlebacks to sixth place have been added. This will also create more scoring opportunities and keep the champion undecided until late in the meet. Cloverdale’s Dean Williams and Greencastle’s Sam Ray enter the West Central Conference tournament as Putnam County’s only No. 1 seeds. They head a list of 19 Putnam County wrestlers among the four top seeds in each of the 13 weight classes. WILLIAMS’ 17-3 record makes him No. 1 at 125 pounds over TriWest’s 11-1 Jamie Bumicle. Greencastle’s Shawn Glover, 10-3, is seeded third and Owen Valley’s Aaron Abshire fourth. Ray is the defending champion as well as the top seed at 119 pounds. The junior takes a 13-0 record in the conference tournament with his archrival, Cloverdale’s Steve Carrell, 18-2, at the other end of the bracket as the No. 2 seed. Ray won a 16-3 superior decision over Carrell in last year’s WCC finale. In December’s Putnam County Tournament, Ray pinned Carrell with 10 seconds left in the first-round match and went on to win the match.

DePauw needs victory Saturday

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Royce Waltman rarely talks about individuals. The DePauw coach speaks in terms of team success and team goals. At the same time, Waltman knows team success leads to individual honors. That concerns him when it comes to guard Brett Crist “He’s a good a guard as their there around, but until we improve as a team he may not receive the recognition he deserves,” Waltman said at Tiger Talk Tuesday. THAT MEANS DePauw can little afford a loss going into Saturday afternoon’s 3 p.m. game at Lilly Center contest with Manchester College. Crist is having an All-America kind of the season. The DePauw Invitational MVP leads the Tigers in scoring at 18.5 points per game, has scored 25 points in each of the last two games and his shooting just under 53 percent from the floor.

LAURA LEDBETTER 13 points, 13 rebounds blocked five shots. But Greencastle did not win on a one-player show. Jenny Black and Natalie Ward kept Greencastle in the lead or close to it with Ledbetter on the bench. Black had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Ward scored eight points and had 11 rebounds. “You have to give credit to Nicole Peters. Monica Koosman got 20 points on us in the county tourney and she scored three tonight,” Greencastle coach Glenn Hile said. “AND YOU’VE GOT to go

NORTH PUTNAM’S Benny Ault, with a 10-8-1 record, is seeded fourth at 119 pounds. Cloverdale’s Kevin Shew and South Putnam’s Jeff Stinson are seeded second in their respective classes, but only one will wrestle. Shew takes a 17-2 record into the 145-pound class, where, should he reach the finale, would probably Monrovia’s top-ranked Turner. Stinson’s 145-pound season came to a close Monday when he suffered a separated shoulder during a practice session scrimmage. He finishsed with a 16-3 record. That injury could move Cloverdale’s Mark Canull, 14-3, from No. 3 to No. 2 seed. SEEDED THIRD FOR Cloverdale are Mark Canull, Scott Hol-

Cloverdale, shooting over 60 percent from the line on the year, hit just 9-of-25 free throws (36 percent) while Greencastle hit 17-of--28 (61 percent). “Kim Irwin hit big, big free throws for us,” Hile said of Greencastle’s final two points. Kaufman, 16-4, has been victimized by his skill and success this season. Many opponents have moved wrestlers down to 171 pounds or up to heavyweight, banking on winning those matches rather than try to take on Kaufman. Cloverdale heavyweight Jason Whitaker, 10-8, is seeded fourth and Jeremiah Lavoine stands 15-4 at No. 4 seed in the 140-pound class. Sharks’ streak stopped

BLOOMINGTON Greencastle’s four-meet winning streak came to an end Thursday night, as the Bloomington North swimming team scored a 111-66 victory. The loss leaves the Tiger Sharks with a 7-4 dual meet record. Greencastle took only three firsts. Craig Christiansen won the 500-freestyle, Michael Brown won the 100-backstroke and the team of Ryan Pitcock, Stacey Baird, Brandt Modlin and Kyle Christiansen won the 400-freestyle relay. “We swam very well,” Greencastle coach Paul Bretscher said. “They are just a very good team.” Greencastle’s next meet is

DPU women set record

The DePauw women’s basketball team is just over the halfway point of its season and has already set a school record for victories in a season. With a 75-69 win at Indiana Wesleyan Thursday night, the Tigers earned their 11th win in 15 tries, breaking the old school mark of 10 victories. The Tigers raced to a 42-30 halftime lead on the strength of 62 percent shooting from the field. DePauw canned 11 of its first 16 shots, including a 5-of-5 performance from Carla Weaver, to take an early 13-point lead. DePauw led by nine, 63-54, following a Suzie Carlson bas-

South adds meet and win

ROCKVILLE South Putnam’s wrestling team got a surprise Wednesday afternoon and a victory Wednesday in a 39-29 verdict against Rockville. Rockville called South looking for a dual meet. Since the Eagles had not wrestled in over a week, coach Matt Griswold gladly packed his team in a bus. “It was great,” Griswold said. “It was a nice suprise just to get to wrestle.” Kris Starks, Jason McCullough, Mike Harris, Rob Brown and Bob Burton all picked up victories on the mat. South also received one forfeit from Rockville. Brown, a junior, had the fastest pin of the night, ending the 189-pound match in just 16 seconds by putting Bill Bettis on his back. Burton came close to Brown’s fast pin, but it took him 36 seconds seconds to pin Rockville’s Dave Handley in the heavyweight match.
