Cubs gives Cougars third loss

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Greencastle and North Putnam both used a couple of surprise defenses in Thursday night’s West Central Conference basketball game at McAnally Center and the team that adjusted the best won. Coach Glenn Hile put Greencastle in a match-up zone. “We were going to make Kellie Bryant, Amber Asher and Kay Phipps beat us (from the perimeter),” Hile said. COACH DOUG ROSE put North in a full-court press. “I thought the press would eat them alive,” Rose said. Greencastle made the adjustments to score 57-53 victory that snapped North’s winning streak at six games. “It could turn our season around, that’s how big of a win this is for us,” coach Hile said. Greencastle led 13-8 at the first stop and went on an 8-2 run in the final 3:02 of the first half to take 27-16 halftime lead. “We didn’t get into the game very quickly,” coach Rose said, noting the Cougars stood around against the Tiger Cub zone. THE TIGER CUBS used a zone defense with Kim Irwin as a chaser on North’s Susan Games, who scored 36 against Eminence. That, plus two fouls in the first 60 seconds of the contest, limited Games to just four points through the first three quarter. Games scored nine points in the fourth quarter to finish with 13. Asher and Phipps provided North with a spark in the third quarter. Asher hit 6-of-7 shots when the Cougars cut the Tiger Cubs’ 13point lead to one. “She’s a pure shooter. She just hasn’t figured it out yet,” Rose said after watching his prize sophomore score 17 points. Phipps made three steals that led to six points as North cut Greencastle’s lead to 35-34 with 1:45 to play in the third quarter. NATALIE WARD, WHO led Greencastle with 20 points by crashing the offensive boards and

Cloverdale wrestlers remain on top

CLOVERDALE The Cloverdale High School wrestling team re-affirmed its Putnam County championship Thursday night with a 36-15 victory over South Putnam. The margin would indicate a poor match. It was anything but, according to Cloverdale coach Dave Kiley. “I anticipated South wrestling pretty well. I felt like they came to wrestle,” the coach said. There was only one pin in the 10 varsity matches wrestled, that going to Cloverdale’s Steve Carrell at 2:30 in the 119-pound match against Andy Singleton. “He seems to be wrestling a little better,”

Coaches nix football playoff idea NEW YORK (AP) Division I-A football coaches are opposed to a postseason playoff, a survey by the American Football Coaches Association shows. The survey of NCAA head football coaches show 72 percent against a playoff after the bowl games. Sixty percent opposed a playoff plan that incorporated the bowl games. It will be the second All-Star game for the city. The American League won 4-3 in the 1958 game. Dravecky has surgery NEW YORK (AP) Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky underwent surgery for 4!6 hours to remove a tumor from his left arm. Dravecky, a 33-year-old lefthander, was operated on by Dr. Murray Brennan, chairman of the surgery department Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dravecky had a cancerous tumor removed from his left arm in 1988 and spent the early part of the 1989 on the disabled list while undergoing rehabilitation. Doctors discovered a lump during an examination at the Cleveland Clinic on Oct. 27.

coach Kiley said, noting Carrell was on the comeback road after a couple of tough losses. Overall, Cloverdale won six of the wrestled matches, as South forfeited matches at 125 and 160. Cloverdale received default points from South when the 152pound match was stopped because of an injury to Jason McCullough, giving Scott Holmes the win. South won two of the closest matches of the night. At 135 pounds, Donnie Schillings scored two points on a take down at the end of the first period and made it stand up for a 2-1 win over Kevin Shew. Clovers lose lead, game

CLOVERDALE A 12-point halftime lead and 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter was not enough to insure a victory for the Cloverdale High School girls basketball team Thursday night. Clay City spent the entire game playing from behind before going over the time in overtime, nipping the host Clovers 53-52 in the nonconference game. “WE JUST SELF distracted in the second half,” coach Greg Hammond said after the Clovers slipped to 5-6 on the year. “Execution. If you can do it the first half you ought tp be able to do it the second half.” Cloverdale led 30-18 at halftime and while they did not play as well

Sharks improve in victory

The Greencastle High School swimming team returned to action Thursday night with a 106-61 victory over Edgewood. Coach Paul Bretscher was pleased with the entire team, even the meet announcer. “Several of our swimmers worked very hard the last three week and it showed a lot of improvement,” Bretscher said. Brett Hiemenz, Craig Christiansen, Brandt Modlin, Kyle Christiansen and Jim McCune drew praise for improved times. Most were involved in rematches from the earlier WCC Invitational. And while not all of the Sharks avenaged their losses, the rivalries created good races. In the 200-IM, Hiemenz beat the WCC Invitational winner, Craig Seidelson, with a time of 2:20.56. Seidelson, who won the invitational with a time of 2:20.37, finished third in 2:21.79, as Greencastle’s

Stinson edged Mark Canull by a 53 decision. Cloverdale heavyweight Jason Whitaker won another of the elose matches, 4-2, over South’s Bob .Burton. “Jason is doing a pretty good job this year,” Kiley said. “He’s figured out how to wrestle those bigger guys.” Cloverdale and South Putnam are in tournaments Saturday. in the third quarter as in the first half, the Clovers still took a 41-31 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation play. Clay City gradually chipped its way back into contention and took a lead late in the fourth quarter. Cloverdale took the lead again and appeared to have the contest won when Clay City tied the score 47-47 to send the game into a five-minute overtime period. THE CLOVERS SCORED the first four points of the overtime period, according to coach Hammond, but again Clay City rallied, this time to take the lead for good. Farris led Clay City’s rally, scoring 15 of her 19 points in the second half. Monica Koosman led Cloverdale

Craig Christiansen turned in a 2:21.64 second place performance. Christiansen nearly avenged a loss to Edge wood’s Dan Rogers in the 500-freestyle. The two swimmers were stroke for stroke the entire race, a sprint in the last 25yards giviqg Rogers the victory in 5:29.76 against Christiansen’s 5:29.86. Modlin swam his best 200freestyle of the season a 2:01.96, but finished second to Edgewood’s Rodgers, who won in 2:01.57. Kyle Christiansen took third in that race with a season best 2:08.12 and later finished second to Hiemenz in the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.11 seconds. Hiemenz won the sprint race in 55.04, as Greencastle outscored Edgewood 11-5 in the event. McCune finished sixth in the 50freestyle and fourth in the 100breaststroke, but drew praise from

South swimmers lose; Goodson improves time

Boyd Goodson won South Putnam’s only first place Thursday night in a 95-40 loss to Southmont in high school boys swimming action. Goodson won the 100breaststroke in 1:25, his best performance of the season. “He cut two seconds off his time,” a happy coach Rob Tilford said. “I think he’s finally getting a lot of the confidence he needs. His first goal was to break 1:30 this year”. Chad Evens took a second in diving and third in the 100backstroke for the Eagles. Anthony Boswell took second in
