Summer plav reason IU 10-0
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) There’s a good reason why Indiana’s seven freshmen aren’t playing like freshmen, and why Coach Bob Knight doesn’t hesitate using them. Indiana’s lOth-ranked Hoosiers (10-0) are off to the school’s best start in seven years, and Knight’s newcomers all played last summer on a national AAU championship team that was coached by former Indiana All-American Scott May. THEY LEARNED THE Hoosier style and the Hoosier attitude. “If we make a mistake, we just go on to the next play. We don’t put our heads down,” said freshman Calbert Cheaney, whose 21 points led Indiana to a 94-66 victory over Texas A&M Thursday night for the annual Hoosier Classic championship. Cheaney and the other six freshmen combined for 66 of Indiana’s 94 points. “We just try not to make the same mistake twice,” said Cheaney, who hit 8 of 11 shots, grabbed five rebounds and had one assist and one steal. HE WAS NAMED most valuable player in the annual Indiana tournament at Market Square Arena. “Going 10-0 means a lot to us going into the Big Ten season,” said Cheaney, who has started every game this season. “It’s a great record, and I think we will be ready to go to Ohio State (Jan. 4).”

Freshmen Greg Graham and Pat Graham no relation added 14 points apiece. Sophomore Eric Anderson had 13 points and freshman Matt Nover added 7. “THIS IS MY 19th season and it is only the fourth time we have gone through the non-conference season undefeated. It is a nice accomplishment for this team,” said Knight. “What they do beyond that, who knows? “I don’t know whether we’ll be in the Big Ten race or not We’ll have to see as we get into it,” he said. “It’s a team, I think, that is growing and trying to develop,” he said.

“Like anything that’s growing, it has pains and lapses occasionally, yet they really come back.” THE HOOSIERS LED 43-36 at halftime, then put the game out of reach with a streak of 11 straight points midway through the second period. Indiana steadily built the lead to the final margin as A&M got into foul trouble. “We played as well in the first 30 minutes of the game as we have all year,” said A&M coach Shelby Metcalf. “It’s the usual Coach Knight team. They play good defense and they pass well. “I like Indiana’s ball club,” he said. “They have good shooters and they don’t take bad shots. Greg Graham is a great player.” GREG GRAHAM HAD eight points during the key streak as the Hoosiers built a 74-51 lead with eight minutes to go and were never threatened. The final score was their biggest lead of the game. Texas A&M (7-7) was led by Tony Milton with 25 points and Darren Rhea with 14. In the consolation game, Wichita State beat Loyola, 111., 75-59 for third place. Cheaney, Anderson, Milton, Loyola’s Keith Gailes and Wichita’s John Cooper were named to the all-toumey team. IN THE FINAL game, A&M managed a lead at 17-15, but a 3point goal by Pat Graham put the Hoosiers back on top for good. Midway through the period, leading only 22-21, Indiana took con-

Keady’s 200th win sends Purdue up against Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Strong guard play and rugged defense proved the difference as Purdue and No. 21 Arizona took first-round wins to advance to Saturday’s finals of the Fiesta Classic Basketball Tournament. Purdue’s starting backcourt of Tony Jones and Woody Austin accounted for 16 and IS points, respectively, and the Boilermakers (7-1) had balanced scoring with two other players also in double figures, while holding Wake Forest (6-2) to a short-lived tournament record of only 31.8 percent shooting in winning 66-52. ARIZONA (4-2) IN some respects paralleled Purdue’s performance in Thursday night’s second-game 74-55 win over Penn State (6-2). Matt Othick accounted for 17 points and Matt Muehlebach 15, hitting two and three of the Wildcats' seven 3-pointers, respectively. Othick, a sophomore, hit 11 free throws in reaching his career high, and broke out of a scoring slump. Arizona’s defense outdid Purdue’s in allowing Penn State to shoot only 30 percent few the nighL BOTH MARKS bettered the 34.6 percent shooting of Texas Tech against Arizona in 1986. Purdue led by only three points at halftime, 32-29, but outscored Wake Forest 11-2 in the first 3:25 of the second half to go ahead 4331. The Boilermakers built it to 52-
K.C.’s Thomas best
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) His selection as the NFL’s defensive newcomer of the year hardly shocked Kansas City’s Derrick Thomas. He had even identified his strongest challenger. “I’ve been watching Steve Atwater to see what he’s doing every week,” Thomas said Thursday when told he had swamped the Denver defensive back in voting by a panel of broadcasters and sports writers for the Associated Press award. “And I think he was probably keeping tabs on me, too.” IF SO, ATWATER knew he had little chance of overtaking the Chiefs’ outgoing rookie linebacker. Thomas’ 10 sacks through 10 games helped turn a mediocre Kansas City defense into one of the top units in the league.
trol with a 14-4 spurt, including seven points by Cheaney, one of only two players to start every game for Indiana. The Aggies closed within seven points three times after that, including a rebound basket by Carlos Marrero to end the first half. In the consolation game, Cooper had 18 points in Wichita State’s victory over Loyola. The Shockers took control with a 29-4 spurt over the final six minutes of the first half and first seven minutes of the final period. THAT GAVE WICHITA State (4-6) a 41-26 lead. Loyola (3-5) cut the margin to six with four minutes to go, but Wichita scored 16 of its final 18 points ot free throws to put the game out of reach. The Deacons had rallied from an U-point deficit in the last 1:17 of the first half, on two baskets and four free throws. “WE LET THEM back into the game at the end of the first half. I told our guys we can’t be that casual,” said Gene Keady, who marked his 200th win as Purdue’s coach. “We need perimeter shooting like that to compete in conference play. The first defensive player taken in last year’s college draft, Thomas is one of those rare athletes with the ability to make those around him better players. Still, his first year has not been free of pitfalls. “I DIDN’T WANT to play like a rookie, but I’m afraid that sometimes I did,” he said. “I’m nowhere close to where I eventually want to be. But I think I made a lot of progress. Physically, my body hasn’t changed since I was in college. But mentally I’m getting to the point where I’m studing more and learning more and starting to know some of the things the old veterans know.” The most painful lesson came in the next-to-last game when he was ejected for kicking at a player.
