Toney, a first-team linebacker, and Sadler, a first-team offensive tackle, heads a list of four Putnam County players recognized by the state’s Associated Press writers in Class A. Their South Putnam teammate, Tad Christy, and North Putnam quarterback Daniel Johnson received an honorable mention. The West Central Conference was represented by two first-team all-staters in Class 2A. Joe Tucker is Putnam County’s only representative in Class 2A though, the senior defensive back receiving an honorable mention. TRI-WEST DEFENSIVE back Bruce Bear and Monrovia defensive back Jason Morgan were selected to the Class 2A first-team defense. Tri-West’s quarterback Rori Chaney, wide receivers Bear and Steve Hi land and punter Ron Cloud also received honorable mention, as did Monrovia tight end Mau Belcher and kicker Jason Grindstaff. He completed his career as not only South’s all-time leading tackler, but as the West Central Conference’s all-time leader with 617. Over the next 11 minutes the teams swapped baskets until Troy Greenlee nailed a pair of free throws to put the Tigers ahead for good, 21-19. Baskets by Crist and Brownell gave DePauw a 25-19 lead at the 3:40 mark. THE QUAKERS CUT the lead to 27-25 as Brian Clements canned a pair of free throws, but Todd Snoeyink’s charity tosses put DePauw up by four at halftime. season. The Tiger Cubs will be making their 1989 debut when they take the floor against the 1-0 South Putnam Eagles. South opened Tuesday night with a 80-52 victory at Turkey Run. Malt Flora led the balanced attack 16 points and Damon Slaton scored 11. Coach Kicth Puckett used that game to look at a variety of combinations. He started the 6-4 sophomore Slaton and 6-1 junor Cory Robinson at forwards with 65 senior Jeremy Sadler at center with 6-1 senior Steve Blaydes and the 6-0 senior Flora at guards. COACH DOUG MILLER said he has not settled on Greencastle’s starting lineup. The coach has said from the beginning that competition among the Tiger Cubs in practice has been tight and the team would be very deep this season. Seniors Kevin Barnett and Chris Covert and junior Mike Greenawald are the only returning lettermen for Greencastle. North and Cloverdale have played, but have also had a long breaks. NORTH OPENED THE year

season. Christy ran for 998 yards and scored 11 touchdowns and a two-point conversion for 68 points. OVER THE LAST two seasons, South Putnam has faced nine of the players that earned first team honors in Class A. In fact, the Eagles faced the entire offensive backfield, comprised of South Decatur quarterback Shawn Blaich, Sheridan running back Brett Law and Springs Valley running back Patrick Hudleson. Sheridan tackle Randy Weaver and South Decatur wide receiver Chris Lane also tangled with South’s Eagles. South’s offense has faced allstate defensive linemen Scott Underhill of Springs Valley and Grant Delph of Sheridan, as well as North Vermillion’s all-state defensive back Mike Socha. NORTH PUTNAM’S Johnson, the team’s MVP, passed for nearly 1,500 yards in his first year of varsity competition. He was also the top throwing sophomore quarterback in the state. Tucker finished his high school career tied for third place in career interceptions at Greencastle High School with 10. He made that 40-year-old list by intercepting six passes this season.

Cloverdale has the most game experience this year, but stands 0-3. The Clovers have lost at Cascade, Linton and Lebanon. FIRST-YEAR COACH Jeff Cherry has started 6-0 sophomore Brian McCamon and 6-3 senior Jeff Bell at forwards, with 6-2 Glenn Furr at center and 5-9 senior Jake Sipe and 5-7 junior Brent Branneman at guards in two of the three games. Cascade coach John Tharp was talking about a victory. Cascade’s Cadets held off Greencastle for a 60-54 West Central Conference girls basketball victory that could easily have gone the other way. A 2-12 NIGHT at the free throw line ruined Greencastle’s strong defensive effort and team play. Cascade, 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the WCC, came into Greencastle averaging 77 points a game. “I thought offensively we did not play well,” Cadet coach John Tharp said. “Overall, I thought they (Greencastle) played a very good defensive game.” That defense, plus the play of Peters and Natalie Ward, kept the Tiger Cubs within eight, 36-28, the first half while leading scorer and rebounder Laura Ledbetter sat on the bench with three fouls. “NICOLE IS PLAYING very well,” coach Hile said of the junior’s 11 point performance. “Natalie Ward had her best game. She was tough,” Hile noted of Ward’s 15 points. In addition to Ledbetter’s fouls, Greencastle lost senior Randi Weaver in the second quarter because of a twisted knee. The inside scoring of 6-0 Dianne Peterson was Cascade’s main
