DePauw women open with victory at Earlham
RICHMOND The DePauw women’s basketball team opened its season Saturday in Richmond with a convincing 8364 win over Earlham College. Suzie Carlson poured in a career high 29 points on 13 of 16 shooting from the field, while Seana Murphy and Carrie Magee poured in 14 and 11 points, respectively to pace the Tigers. The Tigers trailed just twice in the early going, the last coming with 14:31 left in the first half and Earlham leading 8-6. The Tigers went on a 20-4 to

Lakers get boost from their rookie
By The Associated Press Los Angeles Lakers rookie Vlade Divac scored 17 points, had six rebounds and keyed rallies in the second and fourth quarters in 17 minutes of playing time to help the Lakers beat the Washington Bullets 120-115. Magic Johnson had 25 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds for the Lakers in Sunday night’s game. “Offensively, he is a great surprise,” Johnson said of Divac. “He has the moves, a great touch and he’s a good rebounder. He just knows how to play the game. "Vlade has come along much faster than I ever thought,” Johnson said. Washington does not have a true center, so Divac had to defend against Mark Alarie and John Williams, who are smaller and quicker. "Washington does not have a tall team, but tough,” Divac said. “I had trouble with the small guys.” After the Bullets pulled within 105-100 on two free throws by Williams, Divac scored six straight points to give the Lakers a 111-100 advantage with 5:50 remaining. Washington closed to 111-108 on a pair of jumpers by Alarie, but got
Graf beats Navratilova
NEW YORK (AP) Steffi Graf put her own stamp on women’s tennis when she won the Virginia Slims Championships. “I’m just happy everything is over,” Graf said after outlasting Martina Navratilova 6-4, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 Sunday in the season-ending tournament at Madison Square Garden. IN A MAGNIFICIENT duel with thrusts and parries, attacks and counter-attacks, full of aggression from the baseline to the net, Graf was triumphant. The 20-year-old West German

gain a 26-12 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. DePauw led by 16 at the half, 4024. A 12-2 start in the second half gave the Tigers a 26-point lead, their biggest of the game. Carlson’s 29-point outburst equalled the third highest singlegame scoring effort by a Tiger. Additionally, DePauw’s 57.9 percent field goal shooting just missed eclipsing the old mark of 58.9 set two years ago at home against Earlham. The Tigers are home against Taylor Monday (today) at 7 p.m.
no closer. The Bullets were led by Williams and Jeff Malone with 24 apiece. Ledell Eckles added 22 points. Trail Blazers 119, Super Sonics 109 Terry Porter and Jerome Kersey scored eight points apiece in the third period as Portland built a 24point lead. Portland, ahead by 10 at the half, scored eight straight points to open the third period and take a comfortable lead. Porter and Clyde Drexler finished with 20 points apiece, Cliff Robinson had 18 and Kersey had 16 points and 18 rebounds. Michael Cage and Dale Ellis scored 17 each for Seattle. Rockets 132, Heat 94 Sleepy Floyd, who didn’t start for the first time this season after going scoreless in his previous game, had 23 points to go with Mitchell Wiggins’ 26 for Houston. With 7:39 left in the first quarter, Wiggins hit a 15-foot jump shot to give the Rockets the lead for good. Akeem Olajuwon, Buck Johnson and Floyd scored eight points apiece as Houston built a 36-24 first-quarter lead.
dominated just barely in every facet as she erased any doubts, if there were any, as to who was No. 1 in women’s tennis. “For me to win the tournament is amazing,” Graf said. “It’s the best tournament I could have won. This one I didn’t expect it at all. The others I did.” THE OTHER WERE the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open. And in the latter two, it was Navratilova she defeated in the final.
Tigers 0-2 after tournament
By BILL WAGNER DePauw University Sports Information Director HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.— When DePauw University dropped a 69-49 decision to Oaldand University on Saturday it marked the second consecutive evening the Tigers lost to an NCAA Division II opponent. But the outcome of Saturday’s consolation game of the Huntington Bank/Lion’s Club Tip-Off Tournament at Northern Kentucky University was determined early. THE TIGER LOST 82-78 to the host on Friday after leading by as many as 15 in the second half. Saturday, DePauw held no more than a four point lead early on before being blitzed by a much taller and more aggressive Oakland squad. DePauw held leads of 13-9 and 19-15 through the first eight minutes of the game before being silenced for the remaining 32 minutes. The Tigers last lead came at 21-19 when Todd Snoeyink can-
GHS wrestlers surprisingly 4-0
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Dan Layton has coached a lot of good wrestling teams in nearly two decades at Greencastle High School. He has had sectional champions and state finalists. Layton knows what it takes to win and expected Sam Ray, a semistate wrestler last year, to be unbeaten at this point. BUT IF ANYBODY would have told Layton the Tiger Cubs would be 4-0 with seven freshmen in the lineup, that three of those wins would come in one tournament and that a freshman would have four pins to his credit, the coach would have laughed himself into a straightjacket. Greencastle defeated Cascade 45-24, Turkey Run 36-32 and Park Tudor (score not available) Saturday at McAnally Center to win the first annual Greencastle Invitational. “We may wind up 4-10, but we’re 4-0 right now,” Layton said, admitting the Tiger Cubs had not met the strength of the West Central Conference yet. “We’re 4-0 now, but it’s going to get a lot tougher. “I keep telling the kids all along, they have a great deal of ability. What is going to cost them is experience.” RAY, SHAWN GLOVER and freshmen Shane Thomas, Brian Ellerman and Scott O’Hair led the Greencastle victory. Ray was 3-0 and nearly won the trophy for most pins in the least amount of time. The junior pinned his first two opponents in 25 seconds each. Then Park Tudor, after watching him wrestle, moved its wrestler out of the 125-pound match and gave Ray a forfeit, which cost him the trophy. That opened the door for Thomas, who also posted a 3-0 record. That’s right, a freshman took home the trophy for most pins in the least amount of time. In fact, Thomas is 4-0 and has won every one of his 145-pound matches by pin. LAYTON IS NOT surprised

Clovers lose second contest
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor LINTON For four reasons the Cloverdale High School basketball team dropped to 0-2 Saturday night with a 65-56 loss at Linton. The Clovers did not get the ball inside, did not keep Linton (1-1) outside, lost their tallest starter to fouls early in the and shot just 30 percent from the floor. “ONE OF THE keys we talked about today (Saturday) was we simply had to establish an inside game,” Cloverdale coach Jeff Cherry said. “The inside was open and we simply didn’t get the ball in there early and then, because we couldn’t hit the perimeter shot, they began to sag back and make it more difficult to get the ball inside. “And our shooting woes continued.” Cloverdale hit just 17 of 57 shots from the floor and was 2-18 from three-point land. LINTON, ON THE other hand, shot 50 percent (22-44) from the floor and used its size and muscle advantage to get the ball inside and dominated the offensive boards. The Miners attempted just one three-point shot.

Glover posted a 3-0 record, winning two pins and a decision. EVEN WITH THE foul trouble, Cloverdale had a shot at winning. After training 25-24 at halflime and falling behind 28-24 in the first minute of the second half, the Clovers rallied to tie the game 3232 when Brian McCammon converted on a fastbreak layup. A three-pointer by Brent Branneman and a deuce by Jack Sipe gave the Clovers a 37-34 lead, their largest of the night. Cloverdale took a one-point, 4241, edge into the final period, but Linton outscored Cloverdale 10-2 in the first two minutes to take a 51-44 lead. The margin grew to as many as 11 points, 62-51 before the Clovers cut it to eight in the final 1:32. FOR THE SECOND time in as many games, Sipe led the Clovers with 22 points. He also managed seven rebounds. Furr scored 11 points, hitting 710 at the free throw line, and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
